I completely agree. Basketball has always been, and always will be, the poor child in that universities sports program. Poor? Tom Herman is getting paid $5 million, Shaka at $3 million and climbing. He'll be somewhere close to $4M when all is said and done. In two years, Smart is 30-32 and Texas will miss the post season for the first time since 1998, when a 14-17 record got Tom Penders fired. It's hard to see the Horns (10-19) even reach 14 wins at this point. UT isn't happy about paying Smart for an early exit when Rick Barnes had 17 NCAA appearances in 18 years. Herman also climbing...to around 6.5 in "basic compensation"...not to mention all other forms of compensation that come from being head coach of a major football program. Smart is also recruiting at a level way higher than we are right now...

As bleak as this season has been, Texas BB fans have some hope in their future as opposed to what many Gtown fans are feeling right now..

Smart is recruiting very well. However, he may have some holes to fill after this season due to early entries to the NBA. Jarrett Allen and Andrew Jones are both currently projected to be first round picks in Chad Ford's latest mock draft. Even with Matt Coleman, et al, coming in next year, the Longhorns will be very young and are no sure bet to be in the top half of the Big XII.
I think JT3 gets another season no matter what, but Smart would be a very interesting guy to keep an eye on if he's run out of TX after next year. Think he'd be a great fit at Georgetown.

If JTIII were to not be our coach at some point soon, I agree with you about Smart.

Just saw this on the Nebraska bball blog. I think this is the coach who showed Isaac advanced analytics, ie where on the court Ike has best chance of scoring!!! OUCH...
Does Tim Miles get another year at Nebraska? Or is he out of a job?
Cobcast Ryan: He’s out. 3 losing seasons, a heartless, cutthroat A.D. and a fanbase that wants W’s to come from somewhere other than the bowling team. Eichorst will get his man. That’s two hiring busts for T.O.

Martin seems like he always stays one step ahead of getting canned. Rather crafty.

Wow. That makes jt3's deal look like a bargain.

Wow. That makes jt3's deal look like a bargain. He's only made the NCAA tournament twice and lost as a 4 to a 13.

Wow. That makes jt3's deal look like a bargain. He's only made the NCAA tournament twice and lost as a 4 to a 13. He had a Sweet 16 team as well. He's not top tier, but Mizzou is likely desperate, and Martin is from East St. Louis. He's had back to back 20 win seasons at Cal. And III's deal was signed four years ago.

Cuonzo is also bringing the top recruit in the country (Michael Porter) with him to Mizzou by hiring Porter's dad (Romar and staff were fired today, Porter's dad was a Washington assistant) as an assistant. Porter was going to attend Washington. And Porter's younger brother is a top prospect in an upcoming class. I think Porter's dad used to coach the women's team at Missouri and I think he also has other family connections to Mizzou.
So bringing porter in as an assistant might be worth an extra million in salary all by itself!

Now Cuonzo can bring top recruits to Mizzou where they can have equally terrible results. Really not sure how guys like he and Romar get anyone to play for them.
His entire career is based off of a Sweet 16 run by a mediocre Tennessee team (11 seed) that just got hot at the right time. Seems to know just the moment to jump ship while his stock is relatively high, before his employer realizes just how terrible of a coach he really is.

If Washington can fire Romar with the best incoming freshman we can sure fire JT3 even though Tremont still isnt in the picture.

Given that the best incoming freshman is leaving for Missouri, I'm not sure your point makes much sense. Also, Romar just had a season with the #1 NBA draft pick and finished 9-22. He's proven he can't win even with talent. And Romar's historical record is way worse than JT3's. There are plenty of arguments against JT3. This isn't one of them.

You are right I have no idea why we are keeping JT3 but Washington just passed on the best player that's not in the NBA. Fultz is good but he's no Porter. All that being said when the coach has got to go the coach has got to go. That was the point.
