Hate to lose him because the potential was so high. But haven't we spent the better part of the year berating him? This far this year he hasn't added much. So who knows how much effect this has. Wish him best of luck wherever he ends up. Hope he uses his time off to work on his defense and his shot and playing with energy, and rebounding, and passing. If he does he could make the NBA with his athleticism. I always felt like a lot of his struggles were mental so hopefully a change of scenery gets his head straight. While I'm being snarky I do really wish him well. Doesn't really change my prognostications for this team as he was contributing in a positive way so far this year. When one of your best recruits transfers in the middle of the year, it just aint good. It's really not about the on court product. It's about the program. The timing likely has to do with his injury. He can claim the injury ended his season and get the whole year back. Meanwhile if he stayed he'd either have to play and transfer at the end of the year and unless he graduates will have to sit out the year or he'd have to sit round refusing to enter games in order to save his eligibility of this year.

It's easy to write the "The sky is falling" type post, and I get why people feel that way at first blush. But realistically, he was bad last year and bad this year. If you can see past the "star rating" out of high school and the fact that he sort of looks like a player, I don't think it's a huge loss. He still had potential and maybe it would have clicked eventually. I wouldn't have wished for it by any means. But big picture, I don't think it hurts much. He couldn't play defense and what we hoped was just a prolonged shooting slump started to look like it was just who he was. Unless he figured it out somehow, we had better options at both forwards.
There's a realistic chance that the light does go on for him and he's a very good player at his next stop. Wish him the best of luck. But short-term, I don't think it hurts much. And arguably, it just makes the rotation decisions easier.

I finally got to watch the LaSalle game this morning and I kept thinking that the team could really use Copeland (and White for that matter). Ugg. Not at all liking where this season is headed. Not at all trying to be snarky, but I had the opposite reaction. It took me a while to realize that he hadn't played. I just think that Akoy and Marcus provide more of what we need right now; some semblance of a post game, better defense and rebounding. And my guess is that JTIII feels that way as well, and Isaac saw the writing on the wall.

He certainly was not playing to his potential. Maybe a change of scenery will help him.

This is a bigger loss for next year. Not a lot of returning offensive talent. But I like Marcus playing more.

And arguably, it just makes the rotation decisions easier. For the most part, this is where I'm at with it. After seeing him play Riverdale Baptist his senior year out at Northwestern, I was positive he was the next star player to come out of Georgetown. He showed how massive his potential was his freshman season but since then, he's regressed. Some will point to a lack of player development, some will say the kid just doesn't have any dog in him. Whatever he is, I hope he figures it out at his next stop. Hard to fathom out of that 2014 class, only LJ might end up representing GU in the NBA. I really hope Antwan Walker is ready to play immediately next season and Kaleb Johnson makes a huge leap.

At the end of the day, Ike and Marcus don't fit in the same frontcourt. When healthy, they're each 25-30 mpg guys with the same skillset. Having Ike, Marcus, Paul, and Reggie together on the roster at the same time required a correction or two.
Hopefully Reggie or Trey (or Kaleb) can take advantage of the opportunities this might open up for them.

No one really knows whats going on on the Hilltop but I would venture to say that as a player; you can show up for practice, learn the new schemes, out hustle the next man in practice, and be a part of a team or you can choose to transfer when you have been out hustled. I think Issac chose the later. I don't think JTIII ask him to transfer or anyone else for that matter if that had been the case Hayes, Mourning, and Cameron would've all left a long time ago. The window of opportunity is very narrow for these kids it's solely up to them to see it though.

Isaac was not going to play. He was 18 for 98 from 3 since the Monmouth game and the bigger problem was his defense.

I will start by saying I don't like seeing players transfer, and I would have preferred for Copeland to stay. All that said, Copeland was in a pretty deep hole this year. His defense was not there and his shooting was extremely poor too. He's never been a good defender, but his offense really has been non-existent.
As for the short-term, I really don't think it hurts us. And unless he were to improve it will never hurt us. Copeland was such a poor defender that he often dragged us down on that end, where we were essentially playing 4 on 5. On offense, if he didn't improve, he likely would have ridden the pine for most of the year simply because Agau and Derrickson are better right now.
Expectations were always high on Copeland. He was our highest rated member of the class of 2014, people saw a lot of parallels to Porter (which turned out not to be true), and things really never came together. I have to believe it's not entirely physical at this point, but I really have no idea.
I highly doubt he'll ever see the NBA unless his defense gets substantially better. I wish him the best and hope he gets a shot somewhere else. Good luck to him.

Isaac was not going to play. He was 18 for 98 from 3 since the Monmouth game and the bigger problem was his defense. I agree. Much of the fandom around Copeland was based on his 5 star, top 30 rating, and parallels drawn to Otto Porter that just weren't true. This is a great example of what I always say about perceived "talent." "Talent" (unless it's once in a generation talent) gets you nowhere if it's not accompanied by tangible skills. It's really unfortunate that this happened, and I wish it hadn't, but if anything I think JT3 gave Copeland way more minutes than he deserved this year until the injury. Clearly, he was given a shot. My gut instinct is that the injury and transfer provides a way to get more time to develop and get a shot - not an unreasonable way to look at it.

All that potential flushed down the drain. Maybe he'll do better elsewhere. Never played much defense or developed a decent handle, so when he lost his shooting touch, what was left?

All that potential flushed down the drain. Maybe he'll do better elsewhere. Never played much defense or developed a decent handle, so when he lost his shooting touch, what was left? This. He needed to make a leap with his handle and not be a such a liability on the floor, when his shot left him (I agree it may just be confidence) not much left to merit 25+ minutes (which is what he and us want). Don't blame him for leaving, he could be Jerelle, or he could be Domingo. I do think with a pure PG and maybe a better system for him his value as a slasher would have been made him more successful this year - but to be honest he struggled across the board, and think we would have limited his limits and change of scenery is good for him. Obviously disappointed this season has had Paul and him leave, when going into season many had high hopes for a 'leap' from them - but I think if a player is soft on this team you have to give others the minutes - I don't think Paul is soft and think he will probably end up a good college player, but wasn't a fit on this team.

Sorry it worked out this way but the word was out on him: if you need a bucket go at Copeland. Arkansas State did that what seemed like 20 times and other teams followed suit. He was a serious liability defensively and as others have said when his shot went south, what was the point of having him on the floor?
Instead of crying doom and gloom, instead consider that wholesale changes are occurring in the way the team plays and not everyone is going to survive. Issac has the excuse to leave (injury) and can hopefully find a better fit. And the Hoyas have begun to play better without him, so perhaps this will work out as a win for everyone.
Do I wish we had the Issac who realized his 5 star potential? Sure, but that's not the one we seemed to have. The one we had, we may be better off without.
