Staff should go after the players they want, with the understanding they may miss and have to deal with what is leftover. I am 100% fine with that plan. That's a useless plan if you never get anybody. Getting top 50 players is a hard sell at the moment. We haven't had NCAA success, and last season we were terrible. I think you need to approach recruiting differently in such circumstances. Yes, you never give up on some top targets, but you also need to prioritize guys who (a) might be below the top 50, but who fit your team really well, and (b) guys who are a good fit for what you do. Not every team that has been successful has had all top 50 recruits. Look at Wisconsin, or Villanova. Yes, they do have their fair share of good recruits, too, but they aren't lining up McDonalds All Americans like Kentucky or Duke (in recent years), either. Clearly, you always want to get the best players you can get, and you should never give up on potential top targets that might realistically choose Georgetown, but you also cannot aim for the stars to the detriment of all else. Now, if we make a Final Four again, by all means go for all those guys. But, it seems like we haven't had much in the way of a plan. We recruited well in 2014, and the 2015 class seems like it'll be solid too. And Jagan may be great in 2016, but he's one guy. We cannot afford to whiff on two consecutive years.

This board was in full recruiting panic mode for the 2011 recruiting class. ESPN even had a blurb on the panic. We ended up with Porter, Whittington, Trawick, an Hopkins. Let's have a good season and get some good recruits.

The rest of the class, well, Greg didn't stick around, Hops was offensively challenged and Trawick was a diamond in the rough that had to be shaped throughout his four years. Still better than the 2017 so far, but getting the stud made all the difference.

Tyler committed less than a month after that. If you can tell me we're going to get 2 top-130 kids (or even 1) in the next 2 weeks, I'd sleep a lot better.

Beatty is around top 130 and I think we get him by November.

Is anyone else worried about our depth at the center position? There's no more center recruits in the 2017 class that are considering us from what we are aware, and that's now two consecutive classee with neither a power forward nor a center. Even if we get super lucky and pull a Beatty/Waters/Brown, we're basically going to run into the opposite problem of the last few years: too many guards and not enough forwards/centers. Plus if Govan bounces early to the NBA...
Luckily the center position is historically our strong suit so it shouldn't be impossible to land a decent recruit soon, but still.

We have 3 newcomers this year that everyone is pretty excited about. 2 of them we got after last season was over. There is still a lot of time and a lot of good players will still be available.

I could live with an Agau/Mourning/Derrickson rotation at the 5 for one season if Jessie left. You're right, though - we'll need to add at least one big who can contribute 2 years from now.

The program has Pryor for 1 year & Mulmore for 2.. If Mosely, Mulmore & Pryor were all freshman the angst about this recruiting season would definitely be lower.. A big part of the reason I'd like to see 2017 wrapped up is the fact that the staff has a lot of work to do for the 2018 class..

Well, the Hoyas are a LONG ways off from "whiffing" on any recruiting class. They certainly did not whiff in 2016. I am dumbfounded by the notion that Spring recruits somehow do not count. Those guys will be wearing uniforms this season. They are part of the recruiting class, whether they come from high school or Mars, and whether they commit during their sophomore year in high school or right before classes begin. It is very possible, and perhaps likely, that many Hoya recruiting classes will follow the 2016 pattern. The staff will go after the elite high school kids that they REALLY want. They may get 3-5% of those players, or less, and that may mean in some years there are no Fall signings. In other years, they may get lucky and sign some of the those players. In any event, it is not like there are no options available after the Fall. What the staff is saying is as far as they see things, the second-tier Fall recruits and the Spring recruits look about the same; in fact, the Spring may have more promise. There is nothing wrong with that philosophy, and it is no reason for panic.
