LJ has been playing with a groin injury since BE play has begun and still managing to get job done. He also has to guard the best player on the opposing team every game and is being game-planned by opponents to keep him from scoring. And he leads the team (or is close to the top) in assists. He remains the best and most valuable player on the team.
This is no knock on MD. I've been expecting big things from him all season. But one difference between LJ and MD is that when MD has his biggest scoring game he is getting most of his buckets through the assists of teammates. LJ on the other hand has to create on his own for himself in games in which he has his greats scoring outputs. And he has to create for others too while doing so. So far MD is still scoring in pretty much only two ways long three-pointers and layups underneath the hoop. Meanwhile LJ scores on three-pointers, on layups, on midrange jumpers, on drives to the hoop, on filling lanes on the break, on free throw attempts. Speaking of free throws LJ is getting to the line far more often than the bigger MD who could use that big body to get his defenders in foul trouble.
This is why I don't but into that efficiency rating stats as much as some of you. Its easier fr a Jagan or Mulmore or a to be that "efficient" when they aren't required to do as much as LJ and Pryor are or have to carry the team on offense like those two do. And let's not forget that opposing coaches scheme to try to stop Peak and Pryor from scoring. Perhaps those same coaches are just now beginning to make Derrickson a priority as well.

This is the only Derrickson thread I could find, but I wanted to just emphasize how good he's been for us recently. I know that some people don't like advanced stats, but he's been our most efficient player. His offensive efficiency overall is 123.9 (best on the team, unless you count Trey Mourning's limited time an small sample), and in conference play only, it's a whopping 142.3 (a small sample size, but still exceptional). His shooting has been excellent: FT% (95.8% overall, 100% in Big East play), 2 PT% (46.7% overall, 66.7% in Big East play), and 3PT% (44.4% overall, 52.0% in Big East Play (13-25)). His turnover rate is also extremely low (11.8 - by far the lowest on the team, next is Pryor), as well. For this team to have success this season, you need him to play more. If anything he needs to be featured more. Overall, he's "used" 17.2 possessions (19.3 in Big East play), which is way too low considering who efficient he is. Yes, with more usage his efficiency could go down, but not enough to keep his usage so low. Marcus Derrickson is a huge key to any success we might have this season (and next, likely). Agree wholeheartedly. And I'd add that his weight and frame and his slow start to this year make people assume he isn't light on his feet - but he's actually become very mobile since high school. He is as complete a player as I've seen since Otto probably. He absolutely needs to be a featured option, he can score from anywhere on the floor and he is tough (see his competitive fire @ MD a few games into his freshman season). I think our guards could even benefit from playing more inside-out. I think the only thing limiting his usage right now is when he gets into that mode where he's not looking for his shot (glad that has been changing lately) -- in other words, self-limiting. Earlier this season, I thought there were multiple good midrange shots he passed up without even glancing at the basket, but he can make those, and those are the kind that keep defenses honest. Right now he seems to be gaining confidence from all three levels, and if that continues, he's going to be a beast.

Waiting for day where Marcus, LJ and Rodney are all on their games. We will beat whoever we happen to be playing when that day happens.

A lot of things factor into success but for my money the most important is that your best players have to play well. SO far its been one man on, two men off or two men on, one man off. We need some three men on scenarios.

What's happening with Marcus is that he is straight up BALLLIN! We know he has more in his tank and the ceiling, on skills, body and, increasingly, IQ, is very high. Kid is stepping UP!

A healthy Marcus Derrickson is a very good college basketball player. Man did the team miss him early on this year.
Guards next year with Mosley, Mulmore, Waters, and Campbell will be deeper than ever under III. Need scorers to go with them. Hope LJ is there. Hope Jessie becomes a steady offensive weapon. Add in Marcus and the team has some real threats. We shall see. Lots of ball left to be played this year.

I think play has vastly improved.
1) He staying on the court staying out of foul trouble is the biggest thing
2) Working in the post area much more. This causes opposing coaches mismatch problem. Previously they were putting quicker less physical players on him to guard against the 3. Now that the post has become more of a threat, opposing coaches have to pick there poison.
If he work on his post game more and starts pounding players in the post, this kid is going to be a monster.
Oh Yea, GOT TO STAY AWAY FROM THE STUPID LAZY FOULS!!!

He's playing phenomenal right now and just looks like he is so locked in. Was at the game on Saturday and he is so purposeful in everything he does from pregame warm ups to getting loose again at halftime. He's absolutely put the time into his body and game and it's starting to show. Good on him

He's playing great but please get in the post more... That versatility is key on the nights when his outside shot isn't falling

I'm not much of an analytics guy, but is it just me or does Doc seem to miss more of the corner 3's he takes?
