I think they had the best tandem of front court bigs (4/5) players in the Big East this year, so another year of hard work should only help them improve. I think Marcus made huge strides and deserved the honors he has received. Jessie also showed great improvement but I think he has a lot more room for growth. I think I heard Ewing say one time that Jessie does not realize how good he can be yet. Sometime Jessie is playing a good game and he seems satisfied with that level of performance. I think Ewing wants him to be great, and to still not be satisfied with that, he wants him to go there and play like he expects to dominate the entire game. Marcus seems to have a little more killer instinct in him that Jessie does. If Ewing can get Jessie to play wiht close to the intensity he used to play with, watch out!!!! Best news I have heard all year. We were 4 or 5 wins away from making the tourney this year. I have little doubt that Ewing gets there in his 2nd year now.

I am loathe to mention it, because I know a lot of HoyaTalkers don't like or appreciate tempo free stats, but Derrickson was also way more efficient than Govan throughout the Big East season. As I mentioned in another thread, Govan was way less efficient than everyone on the First and Second All Big East teams, with the exception of Angel Delgado. Govan was still really good, but Derrickson was at another level.
I would add what I stated in the All Big East thread. About half way through the season, Jesse Govan was struggling a lot. He got significantly better beginning with the Xavier game on February 3. In about a month, he raised his conference efficiency from 98 to about 106. So yeah, the Jesse of the last month probably was playing at an All Big East level and close to or as good as Derrickson.
Again, this is splitting hairs to some extent, and was in no way meant as a slight to Govan. Derrickson and Govan were both extremely valuable players for us last year, and will be next year too, I am sure.

Derrickson was by far our most valuable player this year and I expect more of the same next year. While I have been vocal about certain players not improving and our defense not improving much over the course of the year, Derrickson clearly improved and was a hugely valuable player. He has more work to do on defense than offense but I expect big things from him next season. I understand thinking Derrickson is the MVP of the team. But by far? By far over the guy who is the first Hoya to average a double-double since Mike Sweetney? The guy who led the team in both points and rebounds this year and is a matchup problem for pretty much every team in the Big East? The lack of appreciation for Govan among so many Hoya fans still amazes me. Losing Govan would affect this team just as negatively as it would if it lost Derrickson. While it would hurt if Govan left his value is mostly just on the offensive side of things. His defense is not good, while Derrickson plays well on both sides of the ball. Look at the team leading negitive stat for Govan's +/- as average and particularly cumulative (since he was on the floor a lot) and it is staggering that number is, particularly with the positive numbers he had on offense.

We were not "4 or 5 wins away from making the tourney this year". Not based on the schedule we played...

Great news. Fitness Jess & Derrickson are all Big East players and are a top flight point guard away from being Sweet 16 & beyond. Both Govan and Marcus brought it last night.
