Surprised SMU would not offer to extend. Not surprised Brown would resign. Looks like SMU tried to lowball Brown on the contract extension: sportsday.dallasnews.com/college-sports/smumustangs/2016/07/08/larry-brown-confirms-resignation-smu-coach-says-contract-extension-simply-reached-schoolBrown declined to discuss specifics about what SMU offered versus what he was seeking. But a source close to Brown told The News that Brown initially sought a long-term deal similar to the six-year guarantee that SMU football coach Chad Morris received. As the months wore on, the source close to Brown said, he lowered his request to five years, then four. SMU's most recent and final offer, the source said, was for three years. However, years two and three were not guaranteed and the first year was only partially guaranteed. Also, the source said, the fully guaranteed amount would have represented a pay cut from Brown's annual salaries since his arrival on the Hilltop.

It may be my own cynicism but I immediately thought that maybe SMU uncovered something shady.

It may be my own cynicism but I immediately thought that maybe SMU uncovered something shady. Brown wanted a five year deal that would have taken him to 80. Per a Gary Parrish column, no coach has ever coached at 80 in major college basketball--not Wooden, not Rupp, not even Ray Meyer. SMU was paying for the last four seasons for a coach-in-waiting in Tim Jankovich, and frankly, he would have all the right to look elsewhere. SMU's APR graduation rate last year was just 939, just above the 930 threshold. There are concerns that the four year average in 2017 could render SMU ineligible based on grad rates, much as it did to UConn a few years back. Make no mistake, Larry Brown revitalized an SMU basketball program that was in quicksand under a string of coaches, from John Shumate to Matt Doherty, and had one NCAA bid in a 27 year period. Given Brown's track record, no one thought he'd be around much longer than four years, and it turns out they were right.
