Chris Beard from his six day stay at UNLV to Texas Tech? We'll know today. Sure looks like that's going to happen. Texas Tech called UNLV for permission to interview him, which was granted. He was an assistant at Texas Tech before accepting the Arkansas Little Rock head coaching job, and never moved his family out of Lubbock. Assuming he makes the anticipated move away from UNLV, the next coach will be the fourth for the Runnin' Rebels since early January. Seeing as the program is down to four players based on graduations and transfers, that looks like a disaster for the next coach.

Especially because the signing period ends on May 18. The UNLV board of regents took about 10 days to agree on Beard, so that does not leave much time to hunt for a new coach. The 2nd in line after Beard was the NMState coach, who withdrew his name from consideration, but that was mainly because UNLV was going to name Beard as their number one candidate. The Finlay Prep recruit still is committed, but that is about all.

Assuming that the move happens, how much heat will be on the UNLV athletic director? The contract with Beard reportedly only provided for a $1M buyout. Texas Tech will pay that in a heartbeat. And if you are Marvin Menzies, the New Mexico State coach, would you even consider making this move to UNLV at this time? Looks to me like the next coach is set up for failure.

I bet they are wishing they gave the job to Stacy Augmon. Lots of local support behind him. Now I don't think there would be any way he would accept the job, and I doubt if the athletic department would offer. TT is getting $900,000 from Memphis for Tubby's buyout, so yes TT would pay the million.
