Re-post time! From after the Jan 6th game: This is what having good coaches does for a conference. It's hard to judge Wojo on part of a season and three Big East games, but two things were pretty clear tonight: (1) they had a good defensive approach; (2) despite being undermanned, they got more than you'd expect for the talent on the roster right now. Same deal with Creighton--they missed a lot of decent shots in the second half that made a 15 point win out of something that was a little closer than that, but they made you think. You get the sense that both teams could easily rebound with a good recruiting class, something that Marquette has coming FWIW. Not a lot of TV names necessarily among the Big East coaches, but there are a lot of pretty young, quality guys on the sideline. Which means a lot fewer "we're winning this because we're just better" games for everyone in the BE this season and more discomfort when dang, those short dudes in yellow and electric blue know how to trap out of a halfcourt zone. Now, the game played out a little differently this time. For one thing, in 2 1/2 weeks we went from 12 minutes w/o a field goal vs. Marquette's zone to shooting 50% for the game and getting looks from all over the place. Still, that point #2 stands. Marquette's getting way more than they should from the roster they've got right now. I know, they're 10-9/2-5 now, but we're the only BE team to beat them by more than 4. They shot 51% against our best-in-the-conference FG% today, and you can't entirely blame it on the "cocaine is a heck of drug" run at the end of regulation. They run some decent plays and heavy screening actions to get open threes. And in the middle part of the game, when the three point shooting was quieter, they got to the rim off the dribble a ton in part by exploiting our bad tendencies when Josh in covering a high screen. They are...deep breath now...swallow...kinda well coached. This is what happens when everyone who says "We need [FILL IN THE BLANK] to be good for the sake of the conference" gets what they want. DePaul was tied for first and up 10 at the half at Xavier, after beating Seton Hall (who oh by the way was ranked--what a time we live in!) on the road. Marquette is playing 8 scholarship guys and like half a center and they're still a pain in the butt. All of a sudden, there aren't any easy conference games that you win just by showing up. And that's really good. Stressful, maybe. But winning one like today sure is fun. It's good if BE teams, because of all the no-gimme games, sharpen their play well enough to achieve a lot of success in March.

I am sincerely looking forward to the next 3 1/2 years of Tre Campbell. I still remember one poster saying that Tre looked like a nice backup point guard for George Mason. The guy has a lot of things going for him...his shot, his speed, defense, etc.; but the one thing that really impresses me about him is his confidence out on the floor. He knows he belongs and he is not out there just to give DSR a breather. Agreed...love his confidence. Love how when her shoots his three, there is absolutely no hesitation. I especially loved how when Sandy Cohen fouled him, it was little Tre who said something to Cohen. Kid has more swag in him then he let's on.

Wow. Not only has GU's RPI moved up to #13 (one spot ahead of Maryland) but the SOS is currently at #3. Only Kansas (#1) and VCU (#2) are ahead of the Hoyas on that front. And by the way....Maryland's SOS is #53. I guess the Terps are fortunate to be playing in a sucky conference.
Earlier I was going to write that with four more wins (with 10 regular season games to go) the Hoyas would be a lock for the tourney. But with those numbers I mentioned above it's very possible three more wins would do the trick.

Don't worry, be happy! This win will mojo us over Xavier, Creighton and Providence. Moreover, I pity other BE teams that have to face Marquette at home. I see only 2 tough road games for us now, Nova and Butler. We win one of those and we are BE champs. Do you realize how deep we are? No way I thought we would win without Traws. And then Peak goes down. And then Bowen. And where's the love for JT3? Like i've said over and over again. Give him the players and he will put a team on the court that we all can be proud of. Couldn't get a good test of my 3 point "rope a dope" theory since Marquette 3 point shooting was just insane. Gotta see their next home game and see if they can hit 13 of 25 3's again. Yes, that Marquette team is one heck of a basketball team. They are the closest I have seen to shooting the three at will.

Hoyas are indeed the beast of the east. What a satisfying win for the hoyas and an impressive showing by Copeland and Campbell. Winning the Big East would be a huge statement by this team and a big plus to have Georgetown as the alpha dog and dominant force in the conference.

Can I just hit the "thumbs up" button and have it apply to every single post in this thread? I probably shouldn't be this happy after they beat a pretty mediocre Marquette team...but the Bradley center, winning despite injuries, taking sole possession of 1st place, Hop going 11-12, etc, etc, etc..
I have a paper I'm supposed to be writing. It's just not happening.

They may be mediocre, but they had two guys who played out of their damn minds in Wilson and Carlino, and as you say it's a really tough place to win. This one definitely felt good and it felt like a win you only get when you're playing really well. Can I just hit the "thumbs up" button and have it apply to every single post in this thread? You would think Marquette was running all over us by listening to the announcers. Just happened to see this post, and yeah, it was really uncanny how that gsme was called. If you go back and look at the highlights/game, I really thought the Tre 3 was as big if not the biggest shot of the game, and the announcers barely acknowledged it. Meanwhile, the first few 3s by Carlino were greeted with such excitement, you would have thought It was 20-0.

We've won 2 road games in a year and you are now giving us 3 more automatically, including one over the team that beat Nova in their building (SHU), and one over the team that will have a desperate, sell-out crowd still giddy thy aren't watching Southern Illinois visit and that beat Iklahoma at home? People hve to realize that as the Yankees of this conference, we are always going to get he home crowd's best shots. It is as if we are playing an extra road game over the SHUs and Providences of the world, and maybe even two extra over a DePaul. Nothing. Is. Easy. One at a time. Savor this one and then focus next on Xavier. Completely agree, we are going to become the hunted in this conference and all road games will be a battle. We will bring out the best in teams, and all Big East teams have the ability to beat us if they play their "A" game. I'm sorry but I dont care where we play Creighton. Unless Traws and Peak and Bowen are out Creighton is not a threat. As for SHU and St. John's, their home court is not as advantageous as the Butler home court plus there is no way Lavin can devise a game plan to beat this Hoya team. Relax folks, we just beat Butler and Nova, and Marquette on the road. We are in 1st place. We go ten deep. Josh Smith has become a force and Mikael Hopkins hits 11 out of 12 FTs. Assuming we stay healthy nobody in the BE can play with us.

Had DVR set to 2 and a half hours. I was really thinking of going 3 but with limited DVR space figured it couldn't possibly go to double overtime.
Towards the end of regulation started to realize, to my horror that there was only 10 minutes left on the recording. Then at 1:50 left in overtime (up 1 with the ball) DVR recording shut off. Scrambled to find the replay at 8 pm on MASN while avoiding any of the tickers on the sports channels and the internet. Then had to wait for another 2 hours until the overtime to find out what happened fearing that we missed the shot and that Carlino hits the game winning shot at time expired.

As long as we split with the other teams and beat Creighton and DePaul twice we will be in great shape for the NCAA tournament. Losing to Creighton and DePaul hurts alot because of their low rpi.

Wouldn't you know that I set my DVR for 2:30 and the game goes into overtime and lasts over 2:30 hours. So I missed most of the overtime but was ecstatic that the HOYAS pulled the win out. I have said this before, the HOYAS bring out the best in every team they play in the BE. Believe me Carlino and the gang will not come close to playing a better game this year and the Hoyas still managed to win. Great play by the frosh again especially Campbell and Copeland. I have to make this observation though, the more assertive and decisive Copeland becomes the more tentative Wright is becoming. Earlier in the year it was just the opposite, White was more decisive and Copeland was tentative. Several times he had the opening for a drive to the basket or an open shot that he passed on. White does not have Copeland's first step nor his hops, but he is none-the-less talented. I look forward to when both of these guys are clicking on all cylinders at the same time.

Just watched OT on my DVR with Collins and Simpkins clearly rooting for Marquette with their constant praise of Carlino/Wilson and lack of enthusiasm when our guards hit big shots. Simpkins played high school ball in Maryland and for Providence against Dikembe and Alonzo. Wonder if he was ever recruited by Georgetown? All the talk of the short Quette bench yet we were down two starters due to injuries and barely a mention.

He had high praise for Joshua Smith and was crediting the Hoyas and III for developing him. In general he had a big man bias to his commentating which is refreshing.

I don't think this was an issue of rooting, it was an issue of amateur announcers as part of FS1's nickel and dime operation. The two clowns aren't exoerienced and professional enough to recognize when they are being influenced by the home crowd.

Just checked out Eric Collins's bio. He apparently was a backup announcer for the Dodgers for five years, and has worked for ESPN and NBC, doing baseball and basketball games. Most recently he joined the Fox broadcast roster, and did some baseball games this summer.
He is a graduate of St. Lawrence, and has a masters degree from. . .Syracuse. Need we delve any deeper into this?
