Re-post time! From after the Jan 6th game: This is what having good coaches does for a conference. It's hard to judge Wojo on part of a season and three Big East games, but two things were pretty clear tonight: (1) they had a good defensive approach; (2) despite being undermanned, they got more than you'd expect for the talent on the roster right now. Same deal with Creighton--they missed a lot of decent shots in the second half that made a 15 point win out of something that was a little closer than that, but they made you think. You get the sense that both teams could easily rebound with a good recruiting class, something that Marquette has coming FWIW. Not a lot of TV names necessarily among the Big East coaches, but there are a lot of pretty young, quality guys on the sideline. Which means a lot fewer "we're winning this because we're just better" games for everyone in the BE this season and more discomfort when dang, those short dudes in yellow and electric blue know how to trap out of a halfcourt zone. Now, the game played out a little differently this time. For one thing, in 2 1/2 weeks we went from 12 minutes w/o a field goal vs. Marquette's zone to shooting 50% for the game and getting looks from all over the place. Still, that point #2 stands. Marquette's getting way more than they should from the roster they've got right now. I know, they're 10-9/2-5 now, but we're the only BE team to beat them by more than 4. They shot 51% against our best-in-the-conference FG% today, and you can't entirely blame it on the "cocaine is a heck of drug" run at the end of regulation. They run some decent plays and heavy screening actions to get open threes. And in the middle part of the game, when the three point shooting was quieter, they got to the rim off the dribble a ton in part by exploiting our bad tendencies when Josh in covering a high screen. They are...deep breath now...swallow...kinda well coached. This is what happens when everyone who says "We need [FILL IN THE BLANK] to be good for the sake of the conference" gets what they want. DePaul was tied for first and up 10 at the half at Xavier, after beating Seton Hall (who oh by the way was ranked--what a time we live in!) on the road. Marquette is playing 8 scholarship guys and like half a center and they're still a pain in the butt. All of a sudden, there aren't any easy conference games that you win just by showing up. And that's really good. Stressful, maybe. But winning one like today sure is fun.

Don't worry, be happy! This win will mojo us over Xavier, Creighton and Providence. Moreover, I pity other BE teams that have to face Marquette at home. I see only 2 tough road games for us now, Nova and Butler. We win one of those and we are BE champs. Do you realize how deep we are? No way I thought we would win without Traws. And then Peak goes down. And then Bowen. And where's the love for JT3? Like i've said over and over again. Give him the players and he will put a team on the court that we all can be proud of.
Couldn't get a good test of my 3 point "rope a dope" theory since Marquette 3 point shooting was just insane. Gotta see their next home game and see if they can hit 13 of 25 3's again.

Also, I thought this was a game where we scored pretty consistently out of timeouts. Since III is so heavily (and unfairly, imo) criticized for this I thought it was worth pointing out.

Since no one else seems to have given some props to JT3, I'll do so. His planned rotations went up in smoke early, after both Peak and Trawick were injured trying to stop a Matt Carlino three five minutes into the game. Jabril tried it after that, but couldn't move. So, JT3 cobbled together a lineup. We saw White and Copeland together for extended minutes. We saw Hopkins and Smith together for extended minutes. We saw Campbell run the point for almost the entire second half and overtime. He didn't have his lock down defenders, Trawick and Bowen, in overtime. He still managed his depleted bench and the team responded. Again. Maybe he's not such a bad coach after all.

What a gutty, gutty performance from your Georgetown Hoyas today! As has been said Hoya teams in the past lose this game easily with the loss of 2 starters, a 6th or 7th man and then another foul out for OT. While it was nerve-racking, this game today was so fun and refreshing to watch considering what happened last year. We are SO deep. Show me another team in the country other than Kentucky or Duke that can play 9-10 without a drop off in play (and in our case actually a step up in play). Josh was a monster today and was not to be denied rebounding the ball late in the second half and OT. He literally threw some of the Marquette guys off him with a simple pivot. DSR played very well. Isaac, like I said after the Nova game, is a star in the making and the "in the making" part is going away very quickly. Is it just me or does anyone else just feel good when the ball is in his hands? I just feel like he's making such great decisions right now, save maybe an exception or two. He can go by any defender, hit pull ups, hit 3s, hit runners/leaners, and finish at the rim. Not to mention some of the passes he whipped into Josh or Mikael today. Damn it's scary how good he is getting so quickly. And then there's Tre. Onions. An absolutely huge shot which if he misses all I talked about above is probably moot because we lose. He played, I believe the entire second half going against multiple zone looks and made good decisions except for the two pull-up 3s in transition which he hit one. Not an easy environment to do that in. Can't post without saying something about Mikael. Couldn't be happier for him. Everyone wrote him off after Providence and the kid goes and dedicates himself to improving his stroke. Thank God he has too because we probably would have lost two more games at this time. Great job by him. So proud of this team right now. Don't wanna jinx anything so all I'll say is keep rolling one game at a time. Hoya Saxa!

Coach deserves huge credit for rallying the troops and adapting his rotations in a game where Wojo got more court time than Peak and Trawick combined.
I can only presume he wears sneakers for every game...

Great game today by the entire roster and credit to the coach. How many teams can go down 2 starters, and win on the road in conference against a team that makes 13 threes? Great effort, love the next man up attitude and the expectation to win despite any challenge. What can you say other than "wow" this team is developing into a force. There are no easy guards on our team and Copeland looks like a big time player in the making. Campbell stepped up big in this game to offset the losses in the backcourt, and that clutch 3 at the end . . . great stuff.
Hopkins foul shooting since the PC game has been a revelation, I give him all the credit in the world for not breaking after that tough performance. That is not something any of us could have reasonably expected, shows great character by him.
My only concern coming out of this game is the health of our players, hopefully nothing is too serious.
I do not want to get too carried away, but things are trending up right now for our Hoyas. To think, two weeks ago we were so concerned about this team's zone offense and now we put up 95 points against that same zone! - that is great coaching by III, the evolution of this team in the last couple of weeks has been a joy to watch!

I was actually quite impressed with how well the defense tightened up on Carlino's threes after the first 4. After the initial barrage, DSR or Bowen were glued to him the rest of the way and didn't allow him the space he needed to launch many from behind the arc. Carlino took a three (missed) with 9 min left in the 1st half and then didn't attempt another one until 6 minutes left in regulation. Obviously, Carlino was still able to create some off the dribble (and a few push-offs), but I liked how the team adjusted and didn't allow the obvious threat continue to kill them...

People hve to realize that as the Yankees of this conference, we are always going to get he home crowd's best shots. It is as if we are playing an extra road game over the SHUs and Providences of the world, and maybe even two extra over a DePaul. Nothing. Is. Easy. One at a time. Savor this one and then focus next on Xavier.

Fun fact. Hopkin's FT% for the season increased from 54% to 62% today. He's shooting better than 80% since the Providence game. And if he doesn't hit all those free throws today, we obviously lose. I know I've been very critical of Hopkins on the court, and there are still some things about his game that I find horribly frustrating, but man, his turn around at the line has been really impressive. Kudos to him for picking himself back-up and turning it around. It's pretty cool to see.

I am sincerely looking forward to the next 3 1/2 years of Tre Campbell. I still remember one poster saying that Tre looked like a nice backup point guard for George Mason. The guy has a lot of things going for him...his shot, his speed, defense, etc.; but the one thing that really impresses me about him is his confidence out on the floor. He knows he belongs and he is not out there just to give DSR a breather.

The name on the front of the blue and gray jersey again means something, both to us and to our opponents. We get every team's "A" game, whether at Verizon Center or on the road; a big difference, now, is that this team seems to be relishing that role, and rising to the occasion. Marquette did everything today, but win. They may not have a better game in them all season. The thing to remember here, though, is that we still haven't seen this team hit on all cylinders yet. It will happen, and it will be glorious.

There are exactly zero easy road games remaining in the Big East, because there are a bunch of quality teams in the conference. Just about everybody has a quality win, and 7 of the 10 Big East teams have been ranked at some point this season, including all of our remaining road opponents (yup, even Creighton).
