What makes a team a “Mid Major” vs a “High Major”? Serious question.. Really good question. It is time for these labels to be revisited. Mid majors: Butler, SDSU, Gonzaga, New Mexico, Wichita State, Creighton, and VCU? High Major: Depaul, Providence, Washington State, Auburn, Texas Tech, Arizona State, Oregon State, LSU and Rutgers? Who would you rather face in the first round of the NCAA?

Who would you rather face in the first round of the NCAA? Anyone who's not a low major.

What makes a team a “Mid Major” vs a “High Major”? Serious question.. It's also a good sarcastic question. Before the arrival of the BCS to help with the categorization of things, there were 6 major conferences. Between the major conferences (most notable for their sponsorship of D-1A/FBS football) and all the single-bid conferences, there were the "mid-major" conferences who could be counted upon to regularly contribute a couple of at-large bids into the 64-team format. There were never "major teams" and "mid-major teams" for precisely the reasons stated above. You might as well opt for "good teams" "double-good teams" and "un-good teams" for all the thought that goes into these debates.

Listen, if you want to make the argument that John Thompson III needs to give people more playing time, fine. There are many examples of players who did not get a chance for much playing time in the last several years, so there are plenty of guys to raise.
That said, bringing up Benimon in this context is just silly. In his freshman year, Benimon averaged 12.1 minutes a game, and his sophomore year he averaged 10.3 minutes a game. The fact is Benimon got a chance to play, and he didn't do much with it. His freshman year, his offensive efficiency was 83.1 and in his sophomore year it was 80.6. The fact is Benimon simply did not perform well on offense when he was in a Hoyas uniform.
The idea that Benimon would have suddenly turned into a beast if he stayed at Georgetown is ridiculous. First of all, Benimon sat out what would have been his junior year (since he transferred), and 2012-2013 would have been his last year at Georgetown.
The stats also show the huge difference between competing in the CAA and Big East. Towson's opponents starting in January were ranked on Ken Pom: 288, 163, 209, 184, 169, 165, 175, 131, 209, 263, 288, 169, 175, 165, 300, 163, 131, 300. In contrast, Georgetown's opponents from January were ranked: 27, 11, 104, 65, 144, 35, 1, 109, 104, 102, 27, 41, 162, 8, 52, 102, 43, and 8.
Listen, I wish Benimon the best, he was a good Hoya, seemed to work hard, and seemed to have a good attitude when he was on the team, but it is delusional to think that Benimon would have put up similar numbers against Big East level opponents, as he did against Towson's opponents. The competition he faced isn't even in the same league as what he would have faced at Georgetown.

What makes a team a “Mid Major” vs a “High Major”? Serious question.. With our NCAA Tournament history since 2008, playing any of these teams the first round is a 50/50 coin flip.

This is big time. Virginia stud drawing a lot of comparisons to Chris Bosh. Have been hoping we were on him.

LA was great as usual, grandson got to play real beach volleyball versus his normal indoor style. Good learning experience for him. UCLA was great as ever, Pauley's rejuvenation was OK, but rather cheap materials used. Irvine won again, back to back national champions.

There is no doubt Bolden is athletic and tall, which alone might be enough for a program like Kansas State to take a chance on him. Guys who are 6'10 with some athleticism are pretty rare, especially as transfers.

I bet the weather was very nice as well. Speaking of Pauley Pavilion and UCLA how are the fans there accepting Steve Alford? Do people believe that Coach Alford is an upgrade over Ben Howland? Very curious about how the fan base feels....also thanks for any feed back and insight you might be able to give.

I have always liked Howland as an overall organization coach. The few boosters I talked to thought Alford wasn't the best pick. UCLA went to several final four ion a row, an the boosters were upset that they didn't win the whole title. UCLA has won more national championships that any school with their domination of water polo, volleyball and Wooden's teams.
First class facilities even though they are land locked by million dollar homes. Proper planning worked.

I thought Howland would have been offered a NBA job as head coach or assistant. I bet he will be back coaching soon, college or NBA.

Not at all certain if Alford is as good or better than other options, but through all of the second-guessing that I have heard here in SoCal about the Alford hire, I have not really heard many people suggesting that the school should have kept Howland. His success notwithstanding, it was time for him to go. His style was certainly not conducive to the job he took and the high visibility that goes along with coaching at UCLA. Most importantly, despite all of his success on the court, the interest in the program was continuously down and it was rare to see sell-outs at a school that used to take these for granted.

I think Mr Magoo is ready to retire, one year in the ACC and he can golf with his buddy, Gary Williams, every day.

I think Mr. Magoo is looking forward to coaching against Louisville, Duke and NC..... If and when he retire the Shaka Smart and Brad Stevens of the world will come running.
