It's an anti-gay phrase and I don't think it has any place in society. Roy knows he made a mistake, and I think he probably thinks its a mistake not because of PR backlash but because he said something derogatory towards a group of people unthinkingly.
I'm glad he sincerely apologized. I wish he would have taken the time to really explain why he thought it was wrong.

At last someone gave a real apology, not one of those "if I offended someone..." I, too, thought Roy's apology was one of the best I've heard.

He messed up. Apologized for it. Now he needs to get back to work.

Probably should have been more but whatever. Lesson learned. Hopefully. Only decorum should be on display on the podium.

Lesson learned. Hopefully. Roy has shown himself to be a very smart guy. I don't think we have to worry about this.

Possibly a little off-topic, but aren't these fines or lack thereof a little ridiculous? Lebron got fined 5k for his first flop. Let's hope he gets fined for the one in Game 6. I saw some picture of a bar tab that LeBron picked up that the tax was 12k. He got fined less than half of his tax on a bar tab. Am I the only one who thinks it should be salary percentage based?

Completely unrelated but the one positive out of Roy's remarks are that it reminded me of this glorious moment.

I am going by the penalty given to Kobe who uttered a despicable word while on the freakin' bench and just accidentally happened to be caught by camera. What Roy did was in front of the media at a podium with a live feed to those watching online or on NBA TV. He not only made the comment that is viewed as gay slur but he intentionally cursed as well. That's two strikes in a live setting that was meant to be televised and replayed by news outlets such as ESPN. Does that not sound worse? Oh, did I forget to mention that Kobe's incident occurred during a relatively meaningless regular season game while Roy's temporary insanity took place immediately after a heavily covered Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals? Hello? Kobe got fined $100,000 and most were predicting Roy would get fined even more than that. I hate Kobe but I don't think what he did was worse than what Roy did.

I sometimes think it should be percentage of salary but I dont think that is the best solution. For flopping specifically, it wont change until the refs can actually call something in-game. Like a foul on the flopper of something. The problem though is what the NHL has found: that you can have a foul and a flop on the same play. So now the NHL will call a two penalties at once and everyone thinks that is stupid because if you flopped/dove then there shouldnt be a real penalty in theory. The players decide to flop because the penalty is so small. Once it can hurt their teams chances of winning they will stop (or just get better at it). The more curious thing is why guys who get paid like LeBron or Kobe dont actually flop more. The pentalty is so small and the in-game pay off could be pretty big. In some ways LeBron should be diving all the time in the playoffs if he really wants to help his team. For him there is really only upside.

All I have to say is people these days are way, WAY too sensitive. I'll leave it at that.

the MF'er comment was dumb enough but to follow it up with that homophobic garbage makes roy look like a complete idiot. the apology does nothing for me. he put himself and his team in a bad position. if he doesn't deliver big tonight he will rightfully be ripped apart by the media.

He won't be ripped by the media if he doesn't deliver big. He has already gotten his punishment from the media, part of it being that his on the court play have been pushed aside as a result of his remarks becoming the sole focus. There may be a few members of the press who would write a stinging criticism of him if he doesn't play well, blaming him for wrecking his team's chances by this distraction. But I don't see a big pile on in that regard. The media has already had its say and Roy has been contrite and punished with a fine. Nothing more to see here.

Roy screwed up. So be it. But I don't know about "rightfully" ripped apart by the media, if he doesn't happen to lead his team to a victory in: - his first Eastern conference finals - on the road - against everyone's presumptive favorite to win the title - and the MVP of the league and probably the best player of this generation. Let's keep things in perspective, shall we? He made a bad mistake. I'm pretty sure that bad mistake is not the defining moment of his season or career. Having said that, I do expect Roy to come up big tonight, win or lose. Go Hoyas! Go Pacers! (Also having said that, if this had been Carmello Anthony, I think I would call for a lifetime ban from the league! )

Yeah but Kobe didn't go to Georgetown so therefore what he did was worse. Duh! It's similar to PED's. When the guy on the other team does it he is a disgrace to society, when the guy on my team does it's not so bad, he was just trying to heal quicker.
