After a lay-off of more than 3 weeks, the prep basketball team returned to action on Friday and defeated a talented Vermont Academy team, 87-67. Brewster was in control throughout and all 12 players saw action. Brewster placed 5 in double-figures led by Arizona-bound Justin Simon (Temecula, CA) with 18 points, while Louisville-signee Donovan Mitchell (Greenwich, CT) added 17 points. Georgetown-commit Marcus Derrickson (Landover, MD) contributed 16 points and Washington-bound David Crisp (Lakewood, WA) chipped in with 13 points. Point guard Jalen Adams (Roxbury, MA) had a team-high 8 assists, as well as 10 points. Unsigned guard Devon Williams (Sharon, MA) played very well defensively. www.brewsteracademy.org/RelId/610929/ISvars/default/Recent_Results.htm

W 75 - 68 Brewster improved to 14-0 on the season (3-0 in NEPSAC Class AAA play) with a 75-68 OT win over a very talented Northfield Mount Hermon team. Although the game was rather sloppy, each team played hard and competed for the entire 45 minutes. Brewster was led by Washington-bound David Crisp (Lakewood, WA) with 23 points, including 5 three-pointers, while Arizona-signee Justin Simon (Temecula, CA) contributed 16 points. Simon took a key charge on the defensive end late in the game, which was huge for the Bobcats. Georgetown-bound Marcus Derrickson (Landover, MD) battled foul trouble throughout, but finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds, while Louisville-commit Donovan Mitchell (Greenwich, CT) added 11 points, as well. UConn-bound Jalen Adams (Roxbury, MA) chipped in with 10 points and 4 assists. www.brewsteracademy.org/RelId/610929/ISvars/default/Recent_Results.htm

I watched most of Derrickson's game vs. Montverde this morning. Brewster won by about 30 points. It seemed that the best Montverde players (Ben Simmons, Dickerson) were not playing, so Brewster was not up against super high level competition. Derrickson has all the tools to be a really good inside/outside offensive player. In addition to his good outside shooting, he posts up effectively, and passes well out of double teams. He can even put the ball on the floor for one dribble effectively. Best of all - he is diligent about boxing out on every defensive rebound! As soon as a shot goes up, he looks for someone to put a body on, and does so effectively. On the down side - he still needs to lose some weight. He also is not a real active player, tends to stand around a bit. he is not a rim protector at all defensively. He has good feet, I think with a little less weight and a little more motivation he can be a solid defender. Offensively, he mostly looked to pick/pop and post up, not much cutting. On another note - Brewster seems to be a well coached team. They play team ball, and play with energy. They ran Montverde out of the gym. Nice to have some history with this program, as it looks like a strong one. Brewster's best player is Donovan Mitchell (Louisville next year) - not super quick, but strong and skilled, he'll overpower most college guards. None of this is new information, just an up to the minute report. I think you can watch the Hoophall classic games on replay at the link below, and you can watch all the games today/tomorrow live (for free, you just have to give them an e-mail address). Lots of the big time high school teams playing in this tournament. www.coxhub.com/hoophall

I just finished watching Derrickson play too and I agree he definitely needs to get in better shape.. I made the comment in the Agua thread that the program will need him to be a 5 in the coming season(s) but maybe it's possible that Derrickson can play the 5 spot for G'town.. Could he be what the Chrabascz kid is for Butler? Chrabascz holds his own and battles defensively and offensively he's a matchup problem, I could see Marcus being a better version of him..

That was the Montverde Prep team (B team I guess?) not the real Montverde Academy team with Simmons and Dickerson.

That makes sense, figured it might be the Montverde B team! They really were not good at all, mostly just firing up the first remotely open 3 on every possession.

Phil Kasiecki @philkasiecki 3h3 hours ago Marcus Derrickson has a terrific skill set. Only thing he needs to do is get in better shape, and he moves pretty well for that body.
Frank Burlison @frankiebur 3h3 hours ago Marcus Derrickson needs to lose some lbs but he is a skilled offensive player both in post and facing. Nice jump hook.
Terrence Payne @terrence_payne 3h3 hours ago Jalen Adams and Marcus Derrickson each have 10 points. Donovan Mitchell has eight, but no dunks, which doesn't seem fair #HHClassic
Finest Magazine @finestmagazine 2h2 hours ago 69-46 Brewster on top big. Brewster forward Marcus Derrickson with 12 points. 13 mins left in the half
Brian Flinn @bflinnhoops 2h2 hours ago Brewster Academy rolls 100-69 behind great performances from Donovan Mitchell, Jalen Adams, and Marcus Derrickson #HoophallClassic
Rick Lewis @coach_Rick57 2h2 hours ago Brewster Academy stats: Jalen Adams 23 Donovan Mitchell 20 David Crisp 12 Marcus Derrickson 12 Joseph Sherburne 7 Justin Simon 6 #HHClassic

Marcus Derrickson, 6-7, PF, Brewster, 2015, Signed with Georgetown
A Maryland native who came north to New Hampshire this year but will be heading home to play for JT3 next year at Georgetown, Derrickson is a match-up nightmare thanks to his wide-body and high skill level from the three-point line in.

Not in the top 100 in ESPN's latest rankings. I think he's going to outproduce a lot of guys ESPN has ahead of him during his college career.

www.brewsteracademy.org/default.aspx?relid=607594The prep basketball team had a 40 game winning streak snapped with a road loss to preseason NEPSAC favorite Northfield Mount Hermon, 97-88. Brewster committed a season-high 29 fouls, which caused 4 Bobcats to foul out of the contest. After committing 16 fouls in the first half, the visitors found themselves down 8 points at the half.
Despite foul trouble from the outset to numerous starters, the Bobcats stormed back to take a 75-70 lead with approximately 6 minutes in regulation. However, the visitors were unable to withstand the tremendous shooting exhibition from the seasoned Hoggers.
A balanced Brewster attack was led by Donovan Mitchell (Greenwich, CT) with 16 points, while David Crisp (Lakewood, WA) added 14 points. Forward Marcus Derrickson (Landover, MD) contributed 13 points, while Jalen Adams (Roxbury, MA) and Jarred Reuter (Marion, MA) each chipped in with 12 points. Brewster drops to 18-1 on the season (4-1 in NEPSAC Class AAA play). Brewster will host NEPSAC rival Bridgton Academy on Wednesday. Game time is 6pm.

What are people's best guesses as to why Derrickson seems to be so undervalued? Here's a guy that was All-MET as a sophomore, the leader of the PVI team last year, a contributor on a loaded Brewster team, a good shooter and hard worker. To be honest, I was ecstatic when we signed him and continue to be bullish.
Is this just another case of rankings overvaluing athleticism and NBA potential, instead of the impact a player will have in college? Because there aren't many recruits that I'd take over Marcus based on what kind of career I think he'll have as a Hoya.

He does need to lose 15-20 lbs but he is very nimble with his feet and can move. He really shoots well even set backs off the dribble.

Great interview! He'll be mismatch. If he works hard like he says, watch out! Love this kid... Btw, great, classic form on his jumper...
