Hockey is back!!!!
Hibernation is at an end....
.... and opening night is almost here!
To get in the mood for the season, here's some more clips:
The classic TV interview scene from Slap Shot:
And an old Florida Panthers take on the same spot, with a (pleasant to look at) twist:
The classic Naslund-Kovalchuk ad:
.... and the alternate ending:
And the Caps' new acquisition shows off his skills:

I guess its prediction time. While I'd like to think the Hawks will get back to the Finals (and I really think they can, it will just be very tough to do), I believe the hated Wings will come out of the West to win the Cup.
I have no idea what will happen in the East. Seems pretty wide open with plenty of evenly matched teams at the top of the conference. I could reasonably see any of Philly, NJ, Pittsburgh, Caps, Bruins, or even Buffalo making the conference finals. Who knows who else might surprise in the East.

I've got to be a fanboy and pick the Caps for the Cup.
Coming out of the West, I'm going to pick a dark horse and go with the LA Kings. Up front they've got the gritty Dustin Brown and the scoring punch of Kopitar. In back they've got Norris candidate Drew Doughty and US Olympian Jack Johnson. All they need is a breakout season from Jonathan Quick in net, and they'll be a team to be feared.
Didn't catch the Pittsburgh-Philly game last night, but I heard it was a good one. The Colorado-Chicago game was a lot of fun to watch.

Dear God, this looks really bad with the Thrashers goalie. I hope he's OK, but this looks bad.

Thankfully Pavelec seems to be OK.
That was the scariest thing I've ever seen during a hockey game, and that includes the Zednik and Fischer incidents. With the Zednik incident it was obvious that they'd taken care of him right away, and with Fischer we got confirmation relatively quickly that he was OK. With Pavelec there was no word until the end of the 2nd period.

Alright, hands up everybody who predicted that Datsyuk and Kovalchuk would get in fights on consecutive nights!

Can I get a little love, Caps fans?? Pretty happy with the way the B's have started off the season, particularly without Savard & Sturm who may not be back...well, ever. Also good to see Tim Thomas return to form. Of course, it's all just prelude. If and when the Bruins make the playoffs, it remains to be seen whether the demons will return.

Woo-hoo! Marc Savard cleared for contact today & will be skating with the team in practice tomorrow! (I know everyone is terribly interested) Well, whether you're interested or not, or happy for Savard's recovery or not, you may wish to tune into the Versus channel on Jan. 10, 2011: Bruins-Penguins. First matchup between the two teams since Savard went down* last year. Should be a firework or two. (*"went down" = "took a cheap shot to the head" of course)

I searched for a 2011 thread but could not find one - if I missed it let me know and I'll move this. Matt Cooke given Lifetime Achievement Award by NHL.

There is one Dan. It's on Page 4. But no one was really participating this year.
Thanks - fixed.
Probably time to jump start this again:
1. The playoffs are nigh upon us. Just a couple more weeks. 2. None of us have any college basketball to watch anymore. 3. The Caps, Bruins, Sabres and most of the other teams that posters on this board seem interested in are all in the playoffs at the moment (the Flames can pull it out, Frostback, wherever you are)
As for Cooke, well, my feelings about him are well known. The guy makes Marty McSorley look like a perennial Lady Byng winner. He really IS lucky he didn't get worse.
(For anyone who is wondering, yes, I thought Chara deserved a minor suspension as well a couple of weeks ago. What he did was not intentional, but it still needed to be discouraged.)
Probably a good move by the Caps to let Ovechkin sit the rest of the regular season. The NHL, of all professional sports, are the one sport in which playoff seeding really means nothing.
And yes, I am dreading the almost certain 3-6 matchup between Boston & Montreal. But seeing as how nothing can match the pain of last season, I should probably stop worrying.

I'm NOT looking forward to a Caps-Rangers series in the first round. The Blueshirts haven't just beaten the Caps this season, they've slaughtered them.
That said, the alternatives (Habs or Sabres) aren't much better.
The Arnott trade for the Caps was one of the better trades I've seen in a while, even though he's hurt now. The Caps' season really took a turn for the better when he got here. He fills a lot of gaps on and off the ice.
As for Chara, I don't think that hit deserved a suspension. It was 2 minutes for interference. What Chara did wouldn't have been an issue had it happened anywhere on the ice. Punishment needs to be decided by what the player did, not the outcome of the hit. A dirty hit that doesn't knock a guy over should be punished more than a clean hit that knocks a guy out cold.
A friend recently proposed a solution to the Matt Cooke problem. Instead of the suspension, just declare open season on Matt Cooke. No hit/slash/elbow/knee/punch/tackle/anything on Cooke can be penalized for the rest of the regular season and the 1st round of the playoffs. I know plenty of players and fans who would greatly enjoy that open season.
BTW, frostback ain't the only Flames fan here!

I was talking about the Chara hit with my brother (who played against (and occasionally with) Paccioretty in youth hockey). We both agreed that there should have been no suspension, because as the Stig said, had it occurred elsewhere, it would not have even warranted a penalty. But I kind of wish they did suspend him, because I hate that goddamn Chara.
I'm cautiously optimistic about a Rangers-Caps first round matchup, but my hopes for this team are never high going into the postseason.

How can you hate Chara? He chokes every year in the playoffs.
Wait, unless you are a Bruins fan like me. I have a definite love/hate thing going on with him. He plays great every regular season and then turns into a softie in critcal playoff moments. He's like a big defenseman version of Joe Thornton.
