Interesting that he came for a visit. I did not know that this had occurred. A positive sign that he would come to DC for visit despite the comment of him being close with family and possibly wanting to stay home at Missouri. If he projects as a SF rather than a PF, as suggested above, then there may be room for him. Also, he seems to be a fundamentally sound player who could blossom in our system, as opposed to Missouri's run and gun. Also, this seems to an under the radar recruitment, so while a long shot, it is not impossible.

From Scout 2011 top 100
Otto Porter, a 6-foot-9 combo forward out of Sikeston (Mo.) Scott County Central, made the biggest move in the rankings. Porter went from unrated to No. 49 in the country and No. 14 at the small forward spot.

Porter is a great talent--have been talking to some friends I made from that area on AAU circuit this past Summer--and more importantly--this speaks volumes to the ability of Georgetown staff to spot talent--the kid didnt' play AAU ball, and Hoyas have been on him with all of the "local" schools who were on him---as they should be. Fact he's grown 2 inches this Summer is impressive too--because he has excellent skill set.
Just feel he's a Missouri lean-and he'll be a great fit for any program-and I take very little of what Reggie Rankin says as truth--we've heard he PLANS on visiting Georgetown--and Rankin last week compared Kyle Singler to Larry Bird--so I'm going to wait and see if he's officially visited Georgetown or not-because Rankin is a bit shaky. If Telep said he's visited--I'd believe it.

Rankin must have just gotten mixed up on that because Otto hasn't visited Georgetown yet, although he does plan on taking a visit in the spring (was told his is planning a Kansas trip as well).
Porter's team will be playing Chicago Simeon (#10 team in the country) this Saturday. Simeon is loaded with talent that includes 6 to 8 future D1 players including top 5 sophomore Jabari Parker.

Good news- I hope the Hoyas keep recruiting this young man. He sounds like a great prospect.

Scout's take from recent Marshall County Hoop Fest:
"Quick Take: On a fairly big stage, Porter, a 6-foot-9 forward emerged as a potential four-star prospect and a sure fire high major guy. He’s flown under the radar after not playing on the AAU circuit and holds just a couple high major offers. He went for 29 points on 14-for-21 and snagged 13 rebounds. We had heard he was a power forward, however we are classifying him as a wing forward. He moves fluidly, has an impressive overall skill set and shoots the ball very well. Perhaps the most impressive thing about his game was his ability to knock down mid-range jump shots."

Scout's description of Porter's play this weekend at the Best of the Midwest tournament:
"Otto Porter, PF, Scott County – Porter was a bit of a mystery man coming into the year having been seen by very few people, but that is no longer the case. First he exploded with a strong performance at the Marshall County Hoopfest, and then he continued it with a very good showing against Chicago Simeon on Saturday night.
He projects best as a face up power forward or big small forward in college, and his mid-range game is something to behold. His pull-up jumper can be unguardable due to his high release and long arms, and even the tough shots go in. Also he nailed both of his attempts from three and pulled down seven rebounds. Overall he finished with 20 points on 7-10 shooting with seven boards and three blocks."
Also, "Otto Porter says his phone has been ringing quite a bit in the past week. He still only claims offers from Missouri and Georgetown, but he did note that UCLA, Tennessee, and Memphis have been in touch." Apparently Oregon and Wake Forest were in person to see him play.

Glad that we were one of the first schools to offer- that always helps.

Just an update on Porter's season.
He had 29pts 15rbs 8blks 5assts in a win over defending Class 2A Tennessee State Champion Bolivar Central last weekend. Next up is a local 16 team Christmas tournament Dec 27-30. As the number 1 seed, SCC's first two games are going to be 50+ point blowouts (which means Porter will likely play 2 quarters at most in each) but their semifinal and final matchups should be much more competitive.

Saw the kid play hes a really good ball handler and passer! He knows how to play defense, hes just really thin! He is only considering GU and Missouri according to a interview in the local paper! He's suppose to be making a visit to GU ! Lets keep our fingers crossed!

The fact that he mentions GU and then says that with Memphis "It's the same with academics" worries me about his evaluation!

In all the articles I've seen about him so far, I don't think there's one that poked a hole in his game. I'm sure there's the "needs to get stronger" line. But it's impressive to hear about a long, athletic, highly skilled guy who go out and put up monster numbers consistently. Would love to have him, but it'll take him willing to be far from home.

His situation is just the kind that fits GU. Very involved parents that value academics, family, closeness and privacy. I think if he makes it to GU for the visit the Hoyas have a great shot. He seems more of a 3 than Jones to me.

We could use him...not sure how it affects class balance, but he looks like a guy that could help right away next year. Hope we're spending significant resources on him.
