From Scout's recruiting roundtable article (Evan Daniels and Brian Snow):
"If you could take a private jet to see just one player who would it be? The biggest mystery for me in this class has been Otto Porter. The Missouri native has flown under the radar and doesn’t play AAU basketball, so he’s been tough to track down. Have heard good things about him, but still haven’t seen him play yet. The other option would be Anthony Davis, Scout.com’s No. 1 prospect. The progression he made form May to the end of July was terrific and I would love to see the progress he’s made since July. With that said, I’ll go with the 6-foot-8 Porter just because I haven’t seen him yet. (ED) There are two possible answers for me. One is Missouri power forward Otto Porter and the other is Xavier commitment Jalen Reynolds. I have never seen Porter play, and have only seen Reynolds against bad high school competition in an unstructured environment. Of the two I go with Porter since I haven't physically seen him to confirm his existence on this planet. The returns on Porter have been very high, and he is said to be a big time rebounder, but with no chance to see him it is tough to comment on his game. He is the one player in the country I absolutely feel I must see play. (BS)"

from the Rivals main board..
"Otto is probably a Missouri lean but will visit Georgetown."
from a Mizzou poster. I have no idea if the person saying that is credible or not.
seems redundant with Hopkins, but the people who have actually seen the kid play (Eric Bossi, is one of the few) are EXTREMELY high on him.

He actually may be more redundant with Bolden coming in 2012.

Saw him play via youtube and I like this kid. He has an all around game. Not that bouncy but he appears to be skilled at just about everything. Has a knack for offensive rebounding. Looks like a high school version of what Evan Turner was at Ohio Taint. This review is tempered by the fact that Bronxie does not know what level of competition he plays in his area.

Hey guys, saw this forum and figured I would give you guys some background info on Porter. Otto plays for likely the most storied high school basketball program in Missouri, located in the southeastern part of the state near the "bootheel". Scott County Central is a small public school (high school enrollment around 100) that has won 14 state championships since 1976 including the last two Class 1 titles. A big part of that success has come from a few large families (Porters, Johnsons, Timmons, Blissetts) who have played for those teams throughout the years, oftentimes with fathers and sons sharing in the tradition. The two best players to ever play for SCC were Otto Porter Sr. and Marcus Timmons. Otto Sr. was part of the original 1976 state champion who went on to become an All-American at the JUCO and D2 levels. Marcus Timmons (who is Otto Jr.'s uncle on his mom's side) was a 6'8" forward who played on 4 state championship teams during the late 80's early 90's before having an All-MVC career at Southern Illinois University. Otto Jr. has several other uncles who were all-state players and had successful careers at the lower levels of college. Needless to say, he comes from a great basketball bloodline. On the court, the best way to describe him is that he is a basketball player. Though he's 6'9", he can handle the ball in the open floor or from the wing. He also has a great midrange game and can knock down the 3 or finish with either hand around the rim. Even though he's just 200lbs, he is extremely active on the boards and doesn't shy away from contact. Even at his size, he plays at the front end of SCC's press, sometimes taking over the point. The downsides are obviously his weight and the level of competition. Even though he plays hard and has a motor that doesn't stop, he's going to have to put on some weight to be effective at the next level. Going up against guys 30-40lbs bigger night in and night out next year will take its toll. The level of competition he typically faces really varies drastically from game to game. While SCC plays in the smallest class in Missouri and in a small school conference, they really try to load up their nonconference schedule with bigger schools and better teams. Last year they played schools like Dallas Lincoln (Lebran Nash), Jackson Northside TN (Casey Prather) and West Memphis (Ark Class 6 runner up). Porter had 15/15, 31/20, and 28/15 in each of those games. He also had games of 38/18 and 25/17 against some larger highly ranked Missouri teams as well as the 29/35 game in the Class 1 state championship game. This year he has started off with a 37/15 game against North Little Rock (Ark Class 7 semifinalist) and 28/18 against East Poinsett Ark (Ky Madden). However like I said, the other part of SCC's schedule consists of blowouts against conference schools and in tournaments they always play in every year. This week, SCC is playing in a small school tournament and have won their first two games by 60 points a piece and Porter only playing 2 quarters and scoring 18 in each. So while he does play against some bad competition, his averages are typically hurt rather than padded in those games because he rarely sees the floor in the second half. At any rate, if you guys want a chance to watch Porter, SCC will be playing in the Marshall County Hoopsfest at 5pm on Saturday where all the games will be webcasted on ihigh.com (links are below). Over the next two weekends, SCC will be playing in different shootouts against Chicago Simeon (defending Class 4 Illinois champion and currently #10 in the country) as well as Bolivar Central TN (defending Class 2 state champion). I don't know if either of those two games are shown on the internet or not, but if I find out they are I will let you guys know. www.marshall.k12.ky.us/mchs/sports/hoopfest.htmwww.ihigh.com/marshallcounty/

Thanks Crash. Very informative. Question. 6'9 HS kids who need to "gain weight" are the norm, not the exception. Based on his dad and uncle, should we expect him to put on some muscle and weight as part of the normal maturation process? Or is this more of an issue than that?

I'm pretty sure he wasn't at the game the other night. KC is about a 6 hour drive from southeast mo, so it would be a haul up there and back for a game the middle of the week.
Honestly I think with a good strength program he could put on 20-30 lbs easily. He's never going to be a bruiser, but then again with his skills he will translate into a face-up 4 and probable 3 if his ball handling continues to improve like it has. Both his uncle and his dad (especially) filled out after high school so I imagine the same will happen with Otto. One thing to note is that ge won't turn 18 until next summer so he may not even be finished growing in height.
As far as where he is looking to go nobody really knows for sure. From what I've heard I'd say mizzou is probably a lean, but he hasn't made any decisions yet. He's going to take his visits and not decide anything until the spring. I think the biggest hurdle for you guys will be the distance from home. He's got a very close family and I imagine being able to see him play is important. But in the end he's going to go where he feels is the right place for himself overall.

ReggieRankin: Otto Porter Think George Gervin/Danny Granger for the old and new hoop fans.
EvanDanielscout: Otto Porter was the reason I drove to the Marshall County Hoopfest. Consider the trip worth while. Kid is a hooper! 9 early points.

Intriguing stuff. Terrific write-up, Crash. Thank you.
We need to recruit a player with point capabilities at some point, but you can't ignore talent like Porter if he's interested. I wonder if we make a big push or we let the scholarship slide into 2012 and pick up a guard then.

As good as he is, do we realistically have room for him with Sims, Lubick, Moses, Benimon, Adams, and Hopkins next year, and Bolden in 2012?

Guys--Porter is a pretty heavy lean to Missouri--and fits perfectly for what they do--so while I understand/hope Hoyas get into picture, think he's going to end up in Columbia.

Yes, but still very intriguing...
A lot of prospects still available for 2011 and 2012, but 1 or 2 scholarships.

I think Porter probably projects to a 3, so the more apt discussion is whether he fits in with Hollis, Bolden, and the Hoyas also recruiting Kyle Anderson from 2012.
We need a player with point capabilities with only Vee and Markel as ball handling guards on the projected 2012-13 roster.

I read that Porter is very family-conscious, and his family wants him to stay close to home. So I agree with RDF, it seems very likely that Missouri would have the inside track with Otto. But can hope for the best!
