Anyone know anything about this kid? I came across this today looking for Monroe/draft stuff: www.deseretnews.com/blog/25/10009148/USU-Aggies-blog-Heslip-An-Aggie-or-a-Hoya.htmlBrady Heslip has trimmed the list of schools he is considering to just two, with one a surprise late entrant in the sweepstakes to earn his services. In a phone call with the Deseret News Thursday morning, Heslip said he has taken Oregon and Boise State off his list and it's now down to just Utah State and Georgetown. "Utah State, right now, is at the top of my list," Heslip said. "But Georgetown has been calling me and wants to try to set up a visit."

this is from late last year .. on a Gonzaga forum:
Scout Profile: Like most Canadian prospects, Rivals and Scout have been slow to pick up on him, but a Dave Telep story on July 23 on Las Vegas Day One, says, " Brady Heslip of Grassroots Elite is a weapon. He’s smart, a good passer and a bombardier from the outside. Good college basketball player for sure."
ESPN Recruit Tracker leaped in with a 93 Scout, Inc., grade and this evaluation: Quote: July, 2009: Brady was a relative unknown prior to this tournament (Adidas It Takes 5ive Classic). He walked away with at least 10 mid-to-high D-I scholarship offers. Brady is a skilled scoring point guard that can shoot with range to 22 feet. He can also create his own shot off the dribble. Brady can create for his teammates also. He can penetrate in the lane and kick to open teammates. He was a major factor in the tournament and will be one of the heavily recruited point guards in this class based off his performance here.
Vital stats, per ESPN:
Code: Brady Heslip | PG Hometown Burlington, Ont., CAN High School Nelson High School Position rank Point Guard # 21 Height 6'1" Weight 165 lbs.Rivals Profile: No rating yet, but it looks like they just started tracking them July 15 with a couple of stories on GopherIllustrated, a Minn. site, with stories on the Best Buy Summer Classic: Quote: At one point the Minnesota Comets had a 16 point lead on Grassroots Canada. But a lot of missed Comet free throws and even more Brady Heslip led Canada to a 73-70 victory. With his team dragging up and down the floor and having to face a double tough Comets the 6-foot-1 Heslip just enhanced his recruitment with a big time performance.
Down 12 in the middle of the second half Heslip ignited his group with back to back three-pointers. Then Brady's third made triple was as cold-blooded as they come made from NBA range coming off a screen while being contested. Heslip dribbled left and pulled up from about 25 feet finding nothing but net and that shot had the entire gym talking. Later Heslip dribbled through three defenders to make a floater in the lane and that play gave Grassroots Canada the lead back after being behind for so long.
Slam: And from a July 24 story by Zach Smart on Slam: Quote: Heslip, Grassroots on Fire
Canada deserves respect from the ground-up.
Grassroots Canada, the herb which yields the basketball seed in the hockey hotbed of Toronto, has enjoyed a scintillating July in the NCAA’s open evaluation period. Several top-flight programs are beginning to dig into their pockets and pay attention to the AAU program that’s groomed a torrent of homegrown talent.
Johnny Flynn, Paul Harris, Denham Brown, and one-time NBA all-star Jamaal Magloire are prime examples area products who flourished in this Division-I launchpad. An influx of young talent turned heads at the recent First Eight and National Invitational Tournaments in Springfield, MA.
Spearheading Grassrooots was Brady Heslip, a gym rat and quick-strike three-point assassin who shot jokers out of the gym (not to mention shoe collector, as we covered in the SLAM 129 KICKS section). Heslip has long carried the tag of moneyball shootist. He spent his past winter scorching the nets at Burlington Notre Dame in Ontario. When he wasn’t on the hardwood, Heslip was traipsing the sidelines of Toronto Raptors games, kicking it with Chris Bosh. Heslip is the nephew of Raptors coach Jay Triano, the former Canadian professional.
“The phone has been ringing off the hook,” explains coach Ro Russell, the program founder and head coach. “The way he’s been shooting the ball, everyone is looking at him.”
Heslip served as a weapon of mass destruction down at Cincinnati, dropping 37 points during one pivotal matchup. Opponents tried executing a serious clamp down operation on Heslip, to no avail. They threw double and triple-teams at him. Heslip fended defenders off, reeling off a personal 17-0 spurt in one game.
“He was still on fire no matter what they threw at him,” Russell recalls. “He’s really starting to blow up. He’s like a Mark Price, Scott Skiles type player. He’s the last one to leave the gym, always. He’ll shoot all day. The kid absolutely loves the game.”

Interesting description - though I have to wonder whether he might not exactly be plan A. He seems like a guy who'd be a valuable combo but who would be competing with Ty, Daniels, Davis and others for that spot (considering we will have Markel, Jason, and Vee for at least the foreseeable future). I guess we could take two of those guys and be done with guards and it does appear we would be best complement them with some shooters. Can't argue with recruiting toughness.

Sounds like Gerry McNamara. Sign him. Hoya offense needs shooters with enough sack to knock down big 3 pointers.

Sounds like Gerry McNamara. Try not to make everyone hate him before he even decides if he's going to go to Georgetown, okay? Besides, I didn't see anywhere in the information above that described Heslip as a "pasty-faced little rat boy" so I don't know how you come by the comparison.

From the article:
"Wherever I go, when I get there it's going to be hard to earn playing time," Heslip said. "I understand that and that's what I want. I'm not going anywhere with the promise of playing time. When I get there, I'm going to work hard and do my best to get out on the floor."
If he comes in with that attitude and it doesn't hurt our chance with a Ty or Daniels then I'd welcome him - it'd be nice to have a bomber who could do in Cuse for once.

every good team needs a sharpshooter. we often go after the guys who can do it all / jack of all trades. freeman, clark, wright can all hit the 3 when they get hot but itd be nice to have a devendorf / mcnamara type guy whose job it is to find some open space behind the line and spot up.

Fine, but could we at least compare him to non-Orangeboys? Colin Falls, Kyle McAlarney, Steve Kerr, Eddie House, Craig Hodges, anyone but Devendorf and McNamara.

Given Heslip's ties to Canada, Andy Rautins may be a better Orange comparison.
If Heslip can knock it down from 3 ala Rautins, I'll take him in a second.

You know, at this point, I think I'm cool with never having another shooter on the Hoyas, if that means we're never going to have anyone that is compared to McNamara, Devendorf or Rautins.

I love Jon Wallace, he is arguably my favorite player of the JT3 era, his 3pt% was fantastic, but he was always somewhat hesitant as a shooter - he seemed reluctant to ride hot streaks and typically took wide open shots, which is great, but I wouldn't mind a designated sharpshooter without a conscience on the team at some point.

When i read he was a PG i was like why would you come to a team with 6 or 7 serviceable back court guys. But if he has that attitude I wouldnt mind- any player with that attitude (even if they just play tyler crawford role) is a great asset. Now the more important question is: If true, Does this signal that JTIII is going in a "small ball" direction? Having 7 guards may help run a fast cutting offense but it could kill rebounding which has never been a strength. JTIII has lived and died by his big men the past few years (Roy, Jeff, DaJuan, Greg), maybe he wants to change it up. But maybe i am reading too much into this and he is just looking for the best players to put on the team with less regard towards position. Is the era of Big Man U over? sorry LIC, dont let your head explode
