MSU would be a great program to follow no matter what the similarities or differences are. They have a GREAT coach (one of the best in NCAA right now), they expect (and get results), and they know WHAT they are looking for in every recruit.
Obviously it helps that MSU has locked down the midwest, but that is a result from winning. The winning comes from picking the RIGHT players from among all the talent to fit YOUR talent. Also, you need to find players that have the right mentality.
Really, what sets MSU apart from all other schools is their recruiting...they pick their targets for their class, and they GET ALL OF THEM.

Thing about Michigan State--they value one thing in their recruits--TOUGHNESS. They get guys who are physically/mentally tough--and that is all Izzo cares about--he figures he can teach them the skills--but he can't teach toughness--you either have it or don't.

St. John's gets Maurice Harkless and Jakarr Sampson and we are still hoping to get Jabril Trawick and Jarrelle Reischel. Something is wrong here.

I got to know Lavin a little bit during my time at ESPN and you will never meet a more personable, engaging and just all around nice guy. I was really glad to hear he got a shot at the St. John's job and it's absolutely no surprise whatsoever that he's been able to have such success recruiting so far.
He gets it.

Too bad he's lacking in coaching skills. Glibness can only get you so far.

Lavin's an exceptional recruiter and he has the wonderful advantage of being able to sell PT and disregard any negatives -- that was the last staff's fault. New staffs always get a boost.
He couldn't coach at UCLA and I doubt that's changed.

3/4 of college basetball is recruiting talent. This is impossible to prove or even really explain what you mean. I could argue 98% of college basketball is recruiting talent. Unfortunately, the differentiation between teams at the highest level is absolutely not that relatable to talent. At least not talent as defined by recruiting lists.

then why did Puke win the championship? Of the twelve available players, three were walk-ons and the other nine were 6 McD's AA, 2 Jordan AA and a Top 5 h.s. senior guard who left early to enroll at Duke. When 3/4 of the roster is All-American caliber, there's not much you can do wrong as coach (except get trashed by GU in front of a national audience and Obama).

UK lacked experience. Time will tell if the one-and-done method gets NCAA Championships for UK under Calipari (although time in his case will be cut off).

They won because they bought into playing defense. Not because of ranking designations determined after they committed, and where they committed, and not based on talent. We play defense, we contend, whoever the recruits are.

Is he the only one that says hi? The rest of the team say hi to you.
They won because they were very good defensively and offensively.

I don't care how good of a coach you are you need talent. We are recruiting like Wisconsin but do they ever do in March. We need to mix in studs with four year guys because a lot of our kids get better over time. Like I told people before don't be over confident that we can't turn into a consistent bottom half of the Big East team. You can ill afford frequent bad recruiting classes.I don't need rankings to tell me the past few years we have bought in some guys who are marginal Big East guys at best.

One down. www.therecruitscoop.com/jabril-trawick-commits-to-georgetownJabril Trawick, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Abington Friends High School in Pennsylvania, has seen his stock rise over the last year. Trawick was a virtual unknown a few years ago. Now he is one of the top seniors in the Philadelphia area. This weekend, the guard went on an official visit to Georgetown. He came out a Hoya. “I just committed to Georgetown,” Trawick said by text. Georgetown coach John Thompson III and staff were very pleased with what they saw this summer out of Jabril. They offered during the July live period. “The coaching staff and the group of players that I will be playing with is a big reason why I chose Georgetown,” Trawick stated. “The time we will get on television is awesome and I really like the Verizon Center. There are a lot of connections there, it’s like a pipeline.” Jabril will also see some significant minutes early on. “(Current Hoyas) Austin and Chris are leaving and I’m going to fill in.” He also commented on the location, “It’s a good location; it’s not to far from home.” As the Philly native is the first commitment for the class of 2011, Georgetown looks to head in the right direction with this commitment. During his official visit, Trawick got to see and experience the Georgetown lifestyle. “I got to play pickup with former Hoya, Roy Hibbert,” he stated. “It was a good time.” Jabril was down to the Big East school and Florida State. This time, the Hoya’s came up big and received a commitment from a guard who has NBA potential.
