Just returned from watching the Rise Elite 24 in Venice Beach. The whole thing was mildly depressing given we don't have a single commit from this promising class. On the flip side, it was pretty cool getting to watch some of fellas we've all followed on Hoyatalk. FWIW, here are some of my impressions of just a few of the fellas: Rak - the kid would have been a nice fit. He played with intensity and was a presence on defense. I don't think he's a one and done type talent, but rather a kid who over the course of 2 or 3 years could develop into a dominant player. He does have to add some muscle ....he lost quite a few boards in the fray and got pushed around DaJuan Coleman, who is an absolute load. JOB - Good player, big boy, but I just couldn't ever imagine the kid in a hoya uniform. Can't explain it. There are guys that seem like Hoyas, Sam Thompson, for one is a guy I see in hoya uniform. JOB on the other hand...I don't, weird as it may seem. James McAdoo - UNC got themselves a winner. Austin Rivers was great....has a nose for the ball, great rebounder for his size, has a great cross-over, a nice shot, a nice floater, and he can finish traffic. LaQuinton Ross - not sure if he was just off, but wasn't super impressed with his game. Quinn Cook - The kid with the biggest attitude and the least game. Jahii Carson - best athlete in the class in my mind. The kid has a good bball IQ and crazy hops. Thanks for the write-up. Here are some additional articles/highlights: rise.espn.go.com/boys-basketball/articles/2010/08/28-Elite-24-game-recap.aspx

DanMcQ-You would be surprised about how some people have inside info to certain programs. They reason message boards are popular now days is becuase of speculation and discussion. I'm not sure of your background on athletics but if you listen good enough you get good info. Trust me. Some people on here I am positive have a degree of seperation from Hoya coaches. You may know something we don't know, but experience has shown us that that is not the case with recruiting under JT3. ALL the pretenders have been exposed (and some have left this forum and/or are silently lurking). Yes, we have posters involved in the recruting world or who intensely follow it, but that is not the same as having insider info.

I can't point to any particular reason, other than... "you're never as bad as you look when things are down, and never as good when things are up!".... but I have a feeling JT3 will pull together a decent class of 2011. Not a great class, but not a disaster either. There are still plenty of good recruits out there and GU is still one of the top 20 programs in the country, with three seniors starting on this year's team. THere'll be minutes for new guys next year, if they are up to it. Just thought I'd put that out there in this slow, pre-Labor Day week! Hope the hurricane stays away from shore!

We need another solid class (like the freshmen class) and that is not a reach at this point.

The fact that other schools are signing guys may actually help us in the long run. Chol,Hopkins, Thompson, and whoever. Id really like Hood but Thompson aint a bad consolation. Any word on him?

The first signing period for this class is in November. They're all up for grabs until then, i.e., rumored Coach K's last-minute push for Nate.

Last word on Hood on this Board was the GTech and FSU connections, which didn't bode well for us. I like Thompson just fine. Are we still thinking a guard in this class? There was that post that said Daniels had "one foot inside the Verizon Center" last week. And now M. Davis, assuming he stays 2011. But with Jason, Markel, Vee and Aaron after this year, is another guard a high priority? Both Davis and Daniels have good cases to make and could add a lot, but I wonder if 2 bigs and 2 wings might be worth considering. Chol, Hopkins, Thompson, and Hood would be great, and give us a lot of length. But as Ranch said in Thompson thread, odds of getting 3 or even 2 of those are small when you add it all up.

What should we be recruiting?

I don't get why everyone is so concerned about adding a guard in 2011. I think we need to add a guard and it seems as if the staff is thinking the same way. If we don't add a guard in 2011...then by 2012 we are left with aaron, markel, vee and we have to rely on an incoming frosh to contribute. I much rather add one more guard in 2011 so that by 2012 said guard has one year under their belt and is ready to play a significant role.

Wait, isn't this the same group that was despondent because we lost TY Johnson? now they think we DON"T need to add a guard afterall?

Fair enough, but one could argue that Markel, Aaron and Vee would make a very good 3 man rotation for the 1 and 2 in 2012. We just need to get bigger on back line and on the wing. That has to be the emphasis of this class. So if it is Davis or Daniels and then bigs/wings, that's great. I also don't remember getting all that worked up about Ty. But if Saxa can make a Myles and a Surrey With the Fringe on Top reference, I will forget him completely

I'd be thrilled if Markel, Aaron and Vee consitiutued a great 3 man rotation at the 1 and 2 in 2012. The fact is together they have combined for 33 points as hoyas....far too speculative for me to simply rely on those 3. We absolutely need another guard in 2011.

Again, if the staff thinks another guard can make a contribution, that's great. Just if the argument is that the guards we have recruited may not be good enough (though 2 have seen no time), so we had better recruit more guards, it would seem that the problem wouldn't be recruiting, but coaching/development. And, in the Myles Davis thread, RB argues (not totally implausibly, IMO) that we may not be able to keep those three guys happy w PT this year and one might consider an early exit, so we had better get a guard for 2011. If we do get a guard, I just hope the expectations are clear for him early on (i.e., learn from Jason b/c you are not going to play). And if we do get a guard, I hope it is one guard and one guard only.

Based on how the staff is recruiting, it would appear we are targeting 1 guard, 1 SF, and 2 bigs.
Biff - did you have sweet season tix and sit next to a Yao Ming clone in the late 1990s-early 2000 Hoya vintages?

Mr. Yao has moved on to Boston, as you may know. Or maybe not.

This class is gonna be special. Even though we haven't landed anyone yet we are on alot of players short lists which we could say as much last season. Seems like the staff is trying to make some noise. I like it. Mix in some 4 year kids with some McDonalds kids and let the magic happen. Georgetown player get alot better over there 4- years. Look at the difference in Greg. *Sigh* - what a difference 5 monthes makes. Hopefully this year is an aberration, we will need some restocking in the next year or two. Huge pressure on the team to make some noise this year and next.

There is always talent out there--and I trust the coaches can find it--but will they have the audacity to----GULP---------send out an offer? I said it--i'm going to vanish from the planet--I mentioned the dreaded "o" word.

The Tombs are going to suck next summer. I'll have to find something else to do on the weekends. Maybe go to the beach or something.

Correct me if my memory is wrong, but hasn't JTIII always had several verbals prior to the early signing period (save for his first class)? I think that's my people are getting a little anxious about the 2011 class--we usually have a couple verbals to keep us calm by this point.
