Mike Brey is the most overrated coach in the Big east. For his 9 20 plus win seasons he has only got to the sweet 16 once!! I mean 2 time BE coach of the year and he cant get it Done in the tournament!

Even before I opened this thread, I knew that the answer was Mike Brey. Sigh, we really like tempting fate, huh I prefer ripping on Mike Brey after we beat Notre Dame.

Well, I am as superstitious as the next guy -- actually more superstitious than the next guy, unless the next guy is Hugo Reyes or something -- but I'm pretty confident that if we lose to Notre Dame on Saturday, it won't be because we got out-coached, so I am OK with this.
GO HOYAS!!

Absolutely. The fact he won back-to-back COY while III was winning BE titles was a travesty (I have that right, don't I?).
But since he's a Duke alum that hasn't been busted for anything yet, the media loves to hold him up as another shining example of K's progeny.

I'll throw Huggins out there. His teams perenially flop, he hasn't made a Final 4 in almost 20 freakin' years and yet he's still a name coach.

Pitino and his Colonel Sanders plantation white suite. Fair enough, but 5 Final Fours and a ring mean you can wear whatever the hell you want. Huggins, on the other hand, has not earned the right to look like a high school phys. ed. teacher.

Eh, looks like he's abandoned all shreds of formality... Oh my. EDIT: I'm guessing you were talking about Brey...

Some combination of Boeheim, Calhoun, Calipari, Brey, Huggins, Dixon, Wright, and Pitino, would be my answer.

Easily Calhoun IMO. Brey winning that award more than once was egregious, but Calhoun effectively built a basketball dynasty at UCONN without being able to coach. They're a perennial powerhouse because they get very talented players, but when they have a down year, he looks like he has no idea what he's doing. No X's or O's - I'll bench you and we'll go down the line of the basketball factory to "motivate" you. I thought it was funny to see this thread right before the ND game though, and I know the motivation behind it I just tend to think of Calhoun as a non-coach

I don’t get it. Mike Brey is the most overrated coach in the Big east because he only got to the sweet 16 once in 9 20 plus win seasons? The operative term there is “9 20 plus win seasons.”
Most fans interpret the tag “overrated” as mediocre. Whether Brey should have won his two COY awards or notwithstanding, clearly he didn’t get them for doing an average job. The media gushes over coaches, if they can find anything at all to gush about. I don't think that the media has handled Brey any differently than his peers.
Finally, what’s with this Duke thing? He’s an overrated media darling because he’s a Duke grad that hasn’t gotten in trouble? I didn’t even know that he was a Duke grad. To continually fixate on Duke just elevates the Blue Demon myth. What’s that line from Shakespeare, “he doth protest too much?”
What is the point of dissing a guy before a game? It’s bad form.

Let's flip it. What current coach do you have the most respect for? I like Izzo personally.

Izzo is high on there. Gotta give credit to Self too. I thought his first title was sort of a Roy Williams-esque one just taking the talent he was given. Now, he's got that team stacked on his own and playing high-level ball.

Brey schedules his non-conference for basically 10-12 easy wins, never playing someone tough.
It's not hard to get to 20 wins with ND's schedule.
Using that as "Brey is good" is a joke.

Brey is a HORRIBLE coach - but I'm not sure he's overrated since I'm unaware of anyone who thinks he's any good.
He's the only coach in the Big East who I was confident could be outcoached by Esherick...that tells you all you need to know.
I hope he stays at Notre Dame as long as possible - the mediocre no man's land in which he has them trapped takes one potential conference foe out of the running each season.
