Huggins took Cincinnati to a final four and two elite eights. I think he is a dirtbag but I don't think he's a bad coach.
Beilien is another underrated coach.

yes, that same John Thompson. What did big John win without Pat Ewing. Dean won a championship with George Lynch, Eric Montross, Brian Reese, Donald Williams and Derrick Phelps. Big John did not reach the final four with Reggie and the Miracles, Alzono / Dikembe and the Allen Iverson 96 team. Actually, Reggie and the Miracles was one of his finest coaching jobs. C'mon, look at that roster and tell me they had any business winning the Big East Tournament and making the Elite Eight. And he went on to make the tournment again with just the Miracles, which is mind boggling.

That team shouldn't have finished up near as well as it did. Watching Wisco beat the crap out of Indiana right now - Bo Ryan can coach. 9 years at Wisco, never less than 19 wins, with nowhere near the recruiting or profile of much of the rest of the B10.

Big John and any coach would settle for a Dean smith type of coaching career. 1 Olympic gold medal, 2 chips and 11 final fours. Big John was not overrated but he is not in same class as a Bobby Knight or Dean Smith.

The team still overachieved bigtime, and JTII was the coach.

Say what you want about Big John, but he fundamentally changed college basketball with the defenses the Hoyas put on the floor. We would overwhelm people with that pressure. No one else played defense like that prior to Big John.

John Wooden might disagree about that last statement.

True, but talent was far more concentrated then. UCLA had it all. But true, nonetheless.

Should have included Bo Ryan on any under-rated coaching list. His record at Wisconsin is amazing, and he does not have blue chippers to work with.
I do think you all are falling into the trap of putting way too much emphasis on the NCAA results as opposed to conference championships and overall record (although sometimes inflated by easy scheduling). To me, Conference championships are the best barometer. The NCAA is so subject to match-up issues, that is why a great coach like Dean Smith only has 2 Championships.

Huggins Final 4 was 92, Elite 8 in 93 and again in 96. In the 12 years since, he's made the Sweet 16 twice. The guy sucks. Agree with you about Beilein though.

Why do people think Beilein is underrated? He's actually very similar to Brey but instead of playing no defense he runs his junk 1-3-1 that everyone in the Big East figured out before he left and basically everyone in the Big Ten now has as well.

Mike Brey is the most overrated coach in the Big east. For his 9 20 plus win seasons he has only got to the sweet 16 once!! I mean 2 time BE coach of the year and he cant get it Done in the tournament! He also wont get it done saturday! Come Get some! Oops, our old pal Mike Brey, the most OVERRATED coach, just thoroughly out-coached our godsend JTIII. It looked like amateur hour out there today on the Georgetown bench. Let's hope our own coach can regain his mojo down the stretch this year.

To boot, the mock T is such a bad look and way overrated. next time you see me in a mock T like Brey's, kill me.

Brey absolutely outcoached Coach today, so maybe we need to cut him a little slack. And it bothers me that when asked how we got hammered on the offensive boards, Coach's only response was "I'm not sure." Hopefully he just didn't want to call out the players for their poor rebounding effort and technique. If he really wasn't sure, well . . .

No No, He is still overrated. Nice win against a head-case team. Brey will finish strong, get a few BET wins and then FLAME OUT in the ncaa tournament. Even though he beat us, hes still overated.
