Once again, I am not defending any of our losses, but people really need to get over this notion that USF is one of the weakest teams in the conference. Umm, if 12th place in a 16-team conference is not "one of the weakest teams in the conference", then I don't know what is. That's pretty weak. They are 6-8 in conference. Tied with Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Seton Hall and Connecticut (are all those the weakest teams in the conference too?). That puts them anywhere from 8 to 12 depending on tiebreakers. They are definitely on the tournament bubble, maybe a little on the outside of it, but on it. I swear, some of you want to continue to say they suck because it makes our loss look worse, and you're all just some sick, twisted masochists. It IS a bad loss. USF is NOT a bad team. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Mehhh... with the exception of one four-game stretch where Dominique Jones played out of his mind, they're pretty bad. He averaged 35/7.5/4.5 while sitting 2 minutes over the course of 4 games (including two overtimes) on 55.3% shooting, all while shooting 85.7% from the line while he got there 16 times a game. You take out those games and average the other 22, and he's shooting 44.4%, 69% from the line on 6.5 trips a game, and 19.2/5.8/4.0.
So when Dominique Jones decides to play like Michael Jordan, no, they're not bad. But on average... not very good.

UPDATED WED 2/24 (after the Nova-USF game). Every team has three games remaining.
Notes:
--SU win over Nova on Saturday night = #1 BET seed.
--Pitt over WVU for 3rd on the "record against teams in descending order tie-breaker"
--Here's how the 5-6-7 mini-conference looks:
MU 1-0; GU 1-1; UL 0-1
MU and UL play next week. Kind of silly to break a three way "tie" when two teams haven't played, but it's winning % even w/ uneven games, so as we stand now it's "legit".
--USF drops out of the five-way mini-conference with tonight's loss, but the other four all won. The standings there:
SHU 2-1; CIN 3-2; UCONN 2-2; ND 1-3
Strangely, UConn got it's marquee win over WVU and all the NCAA buzz and ESPN attention...but dropped from the BET 9 to 10 seed after this set of games if I'm reading it correctly.
(9) Cincinnati/(16) Depaul vs. (8) Seton Hall -------------------> (1) Syracuse
(12) South Florida/(13) St. John's vs. (5) Marquette ------------------> (4) West Virginia
(10) UConn/(15) Rutgers vs. (7) Louisville -------------------------> (2) Villanova
(11) Notre Dame/(14) Providence vs. (6) Georgetown ------------------> (3) Pittsburgh

the strange thing is assuming Cuse beats Nova to lock up the #1 seed. In terms of winning the big east tournament we're better off staying as the 6 seed than moving up to 4th or 5th. That being said if we can get to 4th and avoid one extra game I say go for it. Hopefully Cuse get's knocked off before we have to face them, or we play like the latter half of the second cuse game for a lot more of the game.

I think I drank the kool-aid for a while, but I did think they would finish 8-10 at best, and even that is looking in doubt after Nova destroyed them.

Think we are officially at a point now where all we can care about is winning our own games, hunh? Even at 11-7, we dont control our own destiny for even the 5th seed.

Sounds about right - although I am now focused on other games for purposes of the single bye. Starting to think we might want Mquette and Lville to win tomorrow rather than lose so that teams that can mathematically still finish better than us (i.e., SH and UConn) lose. Having to play on Tuesday would be the ultimate disaster.

Yeah, but beating Cincy would probably end all chances of us having to do that, right? Let's put it this way, if we lose to ND, WVU and Cincy, we probably shouldnt even care about byes too much anymore

My concern is if we finish 9-9, which I would put as just as likely as 10-8 and more likely than 11-7. Really hope I am wrong on that.

Marquette wins, Lville wins. We are heading for 7th place without a win in West Virginia, and the excuse that we have a tougher schedule than the teams ahead of us just doesnt fly anymore. Lville with a huge win in Connecticut, and Marquette wins 3 straight road games, which I guarantee we would never do this season.
If ND wins out, we would likely be 8th place even at 10-8.
WVU is a monstrous game. We could be the 5th seed with two wins.

Updated 2/28 after the Louisville-UConn game. Every BE team has two games remaining.
Notes:
--Syracuse has clinched the #1 seed. Of much less importance, Depaul has clinched the #16 seed.
--Pitt officially has the tiebreaker over WVU on having defeated Cuse.
--UL and Marquette play their only game this week. That will determine their tiebreaker. For now UL has it having defeated Cuse.
--Four way tie for spots 9-12:
USF 2-1; CIN 3-2; UCONN 1-2; SHU 1-2 (last two broken on HTH)
(9) USF/(16) Depaul vs. (8) Notre Dame -----------------> (1) Syracuse
(12) Seton Hall/(13) Rutgers vs. (5) Louisville ---------------------> (4) West Virginia
(10) Cincinnati/(15) Providence vs. (7) Georgetown -----------------> (2) Villanova
(11) UConn/(14) St. John's vs. (6) Marquette --------------------> (3) Pittsburgh
EDIT: Round 17 of BE games this week...
Mon: GU at WVU
Tues: SJU at SYR; NOVA at CIN; USF at DEP; UL at MU
Wed: UCONN at ND
Thurs: PROV at PITT; SHU at RU

So if Georgetown wins out, Syracuse wins out, Villanova wins out, and Marquette loses to Louisville.... Georgetown gets the double bye. At least the first round bye is well within our grasp. Just win 1 and we got it.

It's actually not crazy to think we could still get the 4th seed. Now this would require the Hoyas playing like there is something at stake, so there's that small problem.
But if Louisville beats Marquette, they have Syracuse as their last game. The Hoyas win out and WVU loses at Villanova, all 4 teams are 11-7 and the standings in the mini-conference are:
Hoyas 2-1 WVU 2-1 Louisville 1-2 Marquette 1-2
The bottom two would be eliminated and we'd have the tie-breaker over WVU.
But again, this requires the Hoyas to come out and play defense for 40 minutes on Monday. Let's see what happens.

I'd be pretty happy with the 5th seed, especially if Marquette is the #4, and that really takes nothing more than favorites winning their games and us beating WVU and Cincy.

They're not losing that one. And if they look up at the scoreboard before their Senior Day game against UConn and see Cincy knocking us off, I have a feeling they'd have a little extra juice in them to get the bye.

If we lose to WVU and Cincy, pack up the season, IMO. But, I hear you.

People probably think this is a lost cause, but I still think 10-8 is about where this team should be, and if ND can't win out and Lville loses at Marq and in a revenge game with Cuse, we would be the 6th seed, and could have the matchups for the BET. 10-8 is very important. Show up for Senior Day!

Dan. I am not sure that I agree that a noon Wednesday game is the most likely spot for the Hoyas. If Georgetown beats Cincy, isn't a 7 seed and a 7 o' clock game on Wednesday more likely?
