Has there ever been any consideration to doing a bigger midnight madness the way kentucky does? Right now MM is only open to students. I'm thinking something like moving it to the verizon center and getting a well known rapper to come and perform and letting anyoen who wants to come in( with a certain number of seats saved for students). I know we don't have the fan base that UK has, but 1) Nova does somethign simillar and has gotten good acts out to their midnight madness event. 2) It could be used to get locals interested in Georgetown Basketball. I think people would show up if we got a decently well known name. How awesome would it be if we had a big midnight madness in the verizon center with say Wale this year? I know we tried it with bubba sparxxx in mcdonough, but the sound system is terrible there.
I really like the way our midnight madness is set up, but I think this is an interesting idea.

Not gonna happen, ever. Getting the Verizon Center is the biggest roadblock from the get-go (for the record, AC/DC is performing at 7th and F tomorrow night). It's not worth the investment to rent the building for an event that, at the absolute most IMO, would draw 4,000-5,000...and I think I'm being generous. Wasn't too long ago pre-JT3 that even McD wasn't close to filled for MM, when anybody could attend. It's impressive that the student interest has risen to a point where a "ticket" is required for entry and we fill it up, but I don't get the impression that hundreds of students are being turned away at the door (I could be wrong). So your ceiling of student is somewhere around 3,000 being generous. You'd lose a chunk of that no doubt if the event weren't on campus. And my experience with the non-Young Alum demographics indicates that even given the opportunity, they aren't exactly chomping at the bit for a MM event. The event is pretty well done and at a happy medium now--a mix of come-whenever entertainment/diversion in the parking lot pre-event, a shorter/leaner/meaner inside event list pre-introduction (when MM meant intros were still actually at Midnight, the 2-3 hours of events indoors were excruciating), the introductions, and food/events after.

I'm with HoyaSinceBirth....as long as we can get MGMT to perform instead of "a well-known rapper."
(Hey, it could happen. MGMT has been playing used car parking lots lately!)
;D
Just kidding. Verizon Center will never happen.
Have fun tonight, everyone! I want see pictures, video, posters of a Photoshopped Meghan McCain (holding Austin Freeman instead of an Andy Warhol book, of course)....the whole works!
;D

Well, I for one would go screaming into the night, if there were a well-know rapper there at the event. So, you have already lost the old alum fan base. I think this event should be for the students and an on-campus activity.

Yeah, it'd be great if we could open this up to all fans, but McDonough is not the size where we can do that, and Verizon is way too big. I think we do fine with what we have right now. I mean, if ESPNU is broadcasting it for the second year in a row, we have to be doing something right.
One random thought: My high school pep rallies usually involved skits making fun of our rival school. It would be funny if we did this and mocked an acting Syracuse student before introductions. If done well, it could really get the crowd riled up. I guess too late for it this year, but if anybody planning this is reading, maybe an idea for next year.

Just to be clear, you say that having seen the Children of the Corn MM video and 75 percent of the Rival Reels, right? ;D One more thing...as noted above, I'm manning the Hoop Club Twitter feed tonight. You can follow at twitter.com/HoyaHoopClub and hit us up at @hoyahoopclub with questions or feedback during the night. If you aren't Twitter savvy, use the board thread or PM me on Hoyatalk with your questions. Gonna try to make this a good one for our first big HHC event/Twitterfest.

Anyone have confirmation that MM is going to stream over the web at one of those channels PhillyHoya posted, or on 360? My new cable provider has 360 but not ESPNU (super....)

Only one thing funnier than the 14 year old ESPNU studio host:
Calipari with Obama-esque teleprompters during MM and using the word "diploma".

Just got back.
Pros 1. Coach Williams-Flournoy used her daughters to start up some dancing. 2. JTIII brought out a white glove and the team danced to Thriller. Really awesome.
Cons 1. For some reason, there was an incident outside McDonough and they didn't let people out immediately. I heard that there was a weapon found outside (may or may not be true, take as you will). Kind of seems like a bad omen to start the season.

I'm on the hook for the Hoop Club Blog's full RECAP tomorrow so be on the lookout for that. After Vee Sanford's performance tonight, I think we would all be perfectly happy if Georgetown decided to make "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force the layup line song for all of eternity. Overall, a rather bizarre night I must say--from the weather clearly dampening attendance (you can't ignore the fact that the gym wasn't quite full) to for my money the most entertaining combo of student dance groups and players dancing/having fun in many years to quite possibly the best on the spot adjustment JT3 has made as coach--coming up with a creative way to cover MPD/DOPS need to lock down McDonough at the end of MM after the incident (you can read about it the Georgetown Voice's blog* as of right now, and surely other outlets by tomorrow morning). See ya tomorrow, kids! (*EDIT: Although that 5,000 number they cite as the attendance is probably double what it was in reality)

What is worse - teleprompters in Lexington or restaurant tables in Louisville? A restaurant table at the Louisville event? Did they have a woman bent over it to make Pitino feel more at home? hm
