I guess I share DeGioia's views for now. It's unfortunate that this happened, but it looks like our people responded appropriately.

So, "the individuals involved did not intend to cheat or violate NCAA rules," just to get paid $61K they didn't earn? That's a couple hundred hours for each student.

Absent from this presentation is an explicit acknowledgement of the undeniable fact that the infractions began on the watch of AD Lang and his staff in McD. It appears as though the senior leadership of the Department acted appropriately in self-reporting the infraction and instituting corrective measures.

These kids were, apparently, reporting time worked when they didn't do the work. They were stealing money, and it's wrong no matter how you slice it.

I don't know the details but at first glance it looks like they billed travel time. To and from the baseball field would work out to approximately 3 hours a week. Again, just speculation, but I would imagine that's probably a technical violation but a reasonable mistake to make.

Anyone else's heart stop when they misread "basketball" instead of "baseball?"
Even so, it is a disappointing and sad day for SPLD.

Can someone explain this to someone who's relatively ignorant of how the NCAA works: does being put on probation because of one sport's problems mean that other sports teams can't participate in post-season tournaments?

Can someone explain this to someone who's relatively ignorant of how the NCAA works: does being put on probation because of one sport's problems mean that other sports teams can't participate in post-season tournaments? There's no ban on post-season unless specified; in this case, I don't think this was even a consideration. However, I fully expect jchoya to ask this question in a few days, so here goes, from the the NCAA web site: "The repeat-violator legislation (so called "death penalty") is applicable to an institution if, within a five-year period, the following conditions exist: (a) following the announcement of the major case, a major violation occurs, and (b) the second violation occurred within five years of the starting date of the penalty assessed in the first case. The second major case does not have to be in the same sport as the previous case to affect the second sport."(OK, let's all back away from the ledge and understand that repeat-violator punishment varies widely depending on the issues involved. The best case is never to get in this mess again.) tinyurl.com/nb4c54

Still quite disconcerting that a violation in, say Field Hockey, sometime in the next couple of years could have significant negative ramifications for the b-ball team.

$61k over seven years, spread out over 26 student-athletes... $300 per student/year. 30 weeks in an academic year, we're talking an amount that averages out to $10 per kid per week.
Thank goodness for the NCAA. It's terrible to think what might happen to the principles of amateurism and fair play if it weren't for their diligent oversight. An exceptional running back might collect a six-figure salary to play for USC or something.

Memphis gets a free pass for playing an ineligible player but the baseball team is behind the 8-ball (in scholarships) because it self-reported.

Look, the NCAA is crap, and we all know that. On the other hand, if this happened at SUcks or UMCP, we'd be all over them for running a dirty athletics program. Have the right perspective, yes, but don't minimize this--this is a major embarrassment to Georgetown University any way you look at it, and it damages the great efforts (as exemplified in the case of 'Zo) that the University normally makes to be as clean as possible. This is a very unfortunate day for Georgetown.
