I'm glad Mark Sanford was able to join the NYS Senate in giving us a wonderful summer of political craziness. I really just want to know what the heck he was thinking. I know South Carolina's not the biggest state, but did he really think no one would notice he was gone?

Maybe MSNBC was on to something with the ad nauseum spoof/innuendo coverage of the recent Tea Parties.

That has to be one of the weirdest press conferences ever.

Dude goes away unannounced for a few days over Fathers Day wkd, the story is that it's to hike on the App Trail---during Hike Nekked Day---and ends up in Buenos Aires with his Argentine mistress?
You can't make this stuff up. Thanks for the comedy Gov Sanford ... good luck with the fallout. Hope she's hot.

The local paper, The State, appears to have been sitting on this one for a long time. Below is a link to e-mails dating back to December. No wonder they got tipped off to his flight this morning and got an interview with him as he got to the terminal - they had the goods on him.

Coast2Coast, of course, has hit on the only important fact yet to be determined. Is she just a chick he was in Argentina with, or is she an Argentinian chick, because I for sure know what my preference would be. Sanford is finished*, of course, so really that's all that matters. (*As a potential presidential candidate, I mean. He's already finished by term limits in SC, I'm pretty sure. Maybe he didn't really want to run for President. Hell, if I'm looking to be dismissed from consideration, I might consider a jaunt to South America. It's a nice way to go out.) Personally, I never thought he was the star some in the media made him out to be. I still think the GOP candidate in 2012 is going to be someone that no one is talking about yet.

"Argentine Mistress" That brings back memories. Who remembers Wilbur Mills, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and Fanne Foxe, the "Argentine Firecracker"? She was found cavorting in the Tidal Basin in the middle of the night, with Mills in a nearby car. This would have been about 35 years ago. A link to a TIME Magazine story on the subject follows: www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,911535,00.html Wilbur was a Democrat, so I guess the Argentines appeal to both parties. But of course, I can't help but notice that yet again, the party that claims to safeguard "family Values" and morality has been embarrassed as two of its 2012 Prez candidates, Sen Ensign and Gov. Sanford, admit to affairs.

I think any Republican or Democratic office holder who cheats on his/her spouse should disappear from public sight forever. Sanford is a slime bag.

SirSaxa, Argentines appeal to everyone. I know some Brazilians who would take issue with that....

You gotta think the happiest man in America right now is John Ensign. Nothing drowns out a sex scandal like a more sordid sex scandal.
I sympathize with the notion that this is personal and should between Sanford and his family. On the other hand, people are allowed to use whatever criteria they want in voting for someone, and Sanford went about this is a way to maximize publicity and disruption of state business.
Suggested campaign slogan: "I'm John Ensign, and I f*** American."

I mean, I know it has a little intrigue with all of the lies that Sanford's office told over the last couple of days, but Ensign slept with an employee and a good friend's wife. It doesn't appear like Sanford made things anywhere near that level of messy. I think the will.i.am award for looking sane in the face of absurdity goes to Hoya Jenny Sanford.

Maybe not sordid, but definitely more intriguing, at least for now. Maybe the phrase should be "Nothing beats out a sex scandal like a more recent sex scandal."

Ensign also doubled the salary of his mistress and made a number of other payments to her and her family. Then fired both the mistress and her husband who BOTH worked for him. That one sounds a lot more sordid. Sanford just sounds like a nut job. Pressure got to be too much so he takes off by himself, No One knew where he went, and it was on Father's Day. That is not someone who should hold high public office.

I think any Republican or Democratic office holder who cheats on his/her spouse should disappear from public sight forever. Sanford is a slime bag. So that would apply to Newt Gingrich too right?

That was incredible work by the local crab wrapper. Not only did they land this e-mail haul, but they pushed the envelope with the airport interception this morning. Sanford gave what amounts to a bizarre interview in ATL at the time and did not come clean. (http://www.thestate.com/local/story/838823.html)

They sat on those emails since December and parlayed them into exclusive access (see: the tip-off about him being in ATL).

How many papers with only a state-wide readership/interest would pull that off these days?

Not sure how many could pull that off today. But I am CERTAIN it will be a lot fewer in the future as newspapers are dropping like flies. Not a business model with much of a future.
