So were the emails from his official account (and thus accessible via FOIA)? Or did they somehow get a hold of emails from his personal account?

More on the behind the scenes action on the e-mails here: www.thestate.com/sanford/story/839930.htmlI suspect someone has probably filed a FOIA request as to his official e-mail account for good measure. Rumors are circulating that the mistress may hold a position in Argentina's government. Presuming these rumors are true, perhaps they have some sort of disclosure law that would open up another avenue for the media.

That has to be one of the weirdest press conferences ever. Yeah, I think Sanford hit it on the head when he said, "The biggest self of self is... indeed, self."

I wonder what South Carolinians think about Sanford's apparent use of a state vehicle to travel to and from airports for his most recent vacation to Argentina.

Wasn't this guy one of McCain's best buddies during the campaign?

I think any Republican or Democratic office holder who cheats on his/her spouse should disappear from public sight forever. Sanford is a slime bag. So that would apply to Newt Gingrich too right? Yes. Also applies to John Ensign and Bill Clinton.

I believe in family values. I believe in the family so much that I have two families, that know nothing about each other and hopefully they know nothing about that stripper...and that other stripper....

Ack, wiping out these folks would leave us with three presidents, Jimmy Carter, the little W (though maybe someone has more info) and Obama (so far). Congress would be nearly empty! Who knows about the Judiciary?

How fkn petty are you? you should lead a charge asking him to recoup the $11.23 in gas money that he owes to the state's coffers. If it comes out that he traveled to and from BA on the state's dime that is one thing, but driving the car to the airport? Don't be such a petty liberal dbag.

Sanford took $21,487 in federal funds to travel to Argentina last year on a Commerce Department trip and presumably visit his "good, good friend". www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/06/24/south.carolina.sanford.argentina/index.html. This is from a man who wanted to refuse federal bailout money on the principal of limited federal government. Meanwhile, South Carolina's schools are falling apart - the buildings are from the 19th century and they don't have working desks. $21,487 would certainly pay for a lot of textbooks, desks, pencils, whiteboards, erasers, etc. Governor Sanford is obviously a hypocrit and an idiot.

While I do not disagree with your conclusion, the premise is flawed. I don't think I have ever defended any corrupt officials, in terms of misusing public funds or accepting illegal funds -- no matter waht party they belong to -- and I will not do so in this case. And no, I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday, so I'm not going to say that it's inconceivable that he went on this trip with some ulterior personal motives (I honestly haven't really followed the sordid details, so I don't know how long he knew this woman; is it possible this trip is when they met? I don't know). However, having said that, this is not what you described it to be. It was a legitimate government trade mission. He participated in the official functions of that mission. If he did something bad on his own time while he was there, well yes, that's bad, but it's not anywhere near the same as saying he misused government funds to finance his personal liaison. I am of the opinion that South Carolinians can decide what they want to do with this yutz. If he ACTUALLY misused government funds, not the situation described here, then he must resign immediately, and I hope he faces prosecution. He probably should resign anyway, of course, but he shouldn't be forced to Blago-style, unless there was legitimate malfeasance here. I don't think this story rises to that level. I would also like to add, good for his wife for kicking him out of the house. Hillary should have done the same thing. Now THAT would have been some news! ;D

Anyway, he's going to be thrown out - by Republicans. Katon Dawson's statement yesterday was the writing on the wall.

He has known this woman 8 years, but claims it only became Clintonesque in the last year.
The fact is that he took a state-owned vehicle (SUV) belonging to the Sourth Carolina Law Enforcement Division) and drove 400 miles roundtrip from Columbia to Atlanta, GA since he flew out of Hartsfield. Call me petty, but it's a bit more than $11.23 in gas . . .

I want to know (shrill) how people will feel when they hear (increasing shrillness) that Governor Sanford signed a credit card receipt (shrill factor up to 7.5) for condoms (...9...) with a pen provided by the good people of the state of South Carolina! (by the end only dogs should be able to hear it).
The only legitimate question in this story is "Is this chick hot?" Are pictures circulating on the interwebs yet because I haven't been able to find any? Anyone?

But what are the chances we'd be more willing to forgive him if that was true, huh? [peter griffin voice] Yeah. Think about that. [/peter griffin voice]

Here's a question? Why has the name of his paramour been redacted by the press and not reported. It's not like she's a victim of sexual assault.

Yeah, cause that $21,487 would have gone directly to South Carolina schools had it not been spent on the trip to Argentina. What an idiot.

I agree. Kudos to her (and any writers/editors that may have helped her) for putting out such an elegant statement.
