I agree. Kudos to her (and any writers/editors that may have helped her) for putting out such an elegant statement. I totally agree, very well done. The statement also helps to explain why she was so inarticulate regarding the guv's initial disappearance. Under the terms of their separation, she couldn't just come out and say "Mark doesn't sleep here any more."

You gotta think the happiest man in America right now is John Ensign. Nothing drowns out a sex scandal like a more sordid sex scandal. I sympathize with the notion that this is personal and should between Sanford and his family. On the other hand, people are allowed to use whatever criteria they want in voting for someone, and Sanford went about this is a way to maximize publicity and disruption of state business. Suggested campaign slogan: "I'm John Ensign, and I f*** American." I do love how the guy who started the thread on this subject thinks it's really only a personal issue for his family to handle in private. It reminds me of a poster, can't remember his handle, who used to rush to this very board to announce scandals (Republican only) by prefacing them with a bunch of nonsense about how it might not be true so he didn't yet believe anything and he was willing to give the benefit of the doubt, etc etc BUUUTTTT.......BAM! But that's an excellent campaign slogan. Oh...and Gov? Resign now. Not for the affair itself, but for leaving the state to conduct your affair and thinking you could or should get away with that kind of malfeasance.

Sanford took $21,487 in federal funds to travel to Argentina last year on a Commerce Department trip and presumably visit his "good, good friend". www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/06/24/south.carolina.sanford.argentina/index.html. This is from a man who wanted to refuse federal bailout money on the principal of limited federal government. Meanwhile, South Carolina's schools are falling apart - the buildings are from the 19th century and they don't have working desks. $21,487 would certainly pay for a lot of textbooks, desks, pencils, whiteboards, erasers, etc. Governor Sanford is obviously a hypocrit and an idiot. Yeah, cause that $21,487 would have gone directly to South Carolina schools had it not been spent on the trip to Argentina. What an idiot. Are you really so hyper-partisan that you ignore the principle of that comment in order to lob an ad hominem attack?

I'll join the chorus here -- Jennie Sanford wins the cojones of the week award for a such a well-written, honest, and strong statement. I would also like to think that even in today's political world, such a statement can be made without the assistance of other writers/editors. Especially when the author is a Georgetown graduate.

I'm going to go ahead and start the clock now on how long -- for all that we admire her today -- how long it will take for everyone to take this all back.....
You know, when Jenny Sanford forms a PAC.
And an exploratory committee.
And goes on Greta.
And Oprah...and The View....and O'Reilly.....and Morning Joe.....
(Don't think this won't happen. This is a very politically active and savvy woman. I'd say the odds are better that it does than it doesn't).
But for now, to echo Mr. Gump: "We love youuuuu, Jennnnnyyyy!"

Nate Silver has an interesting chart showing that Sanford has the second highest "should resign" ratings of any of the politicians caught (#1 is Elliot Spitzer). I particularly like his scandal bingo chart : I guess my question out of this is that the "should resign" ratings are top-heavy with Governors, where the "don't care so much" ratings are heavy with Senators. Are we more accepting of infidelity when the person has to be away in DC away from family, rather than Governors - who live with their family? Larry Craig is the only one who bucks this trend, but that may be because people are highly disapproving of anonymous bathroom sex.

Fun chart. But what are the lurid, kinky details in this instance? I haven't read the e-mails, were they THAT explicit? I mean, "cigar" explicit? And, in my opinion, anyone who cheats on their spouse is a hypocrite, so there should be Yes! across the board on that one. Not sure how Clinton and McGreevey get off on that one. Anyway, someone was asking for a picture yesterday. Here it is, in case everyone hasn't seen it already: guanabee.com/2009/06/maria-belen-chapur-picture-videoBut, personally, I liked this explanation: www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s2i55143

No one honestly expects a Democrat to be faithful to his spouse, so there's no hypocrisy there. What's hardest to explain about the chart is why John Edwards is missing from it. He didn't have a single thing going for him on t he campaign trail in '08 other than the fact that he was a loving husband faithfully sticking by his cancer-stricken wife's side and it turned out that even that was a fraud.

He talks about imagining her erotic curves and her being naked holding her own breasts and then starts quoting Corinthians two sentences later.

And Jesus Christ! the stories of McGreevey banging strange dudes at Jersey Turnpike rest areas weren't lurid or graphic enough for this Nate Silver guy?

Probably because Edwards didn't hold a position to resign from in 2007 when his extramarital affair was revealed. Silver's post was centered around current office-holders and whether extramarital affairs cause resignation pressure. If Edwards had been in the Senate at the time and polling data for him existed, I'm sure he would have included him as a data point.

Ah, thanks, very sensible. I also think "office-holder" would be a term that should see a lot more usage than politician. I know I tend to lump all of those people, whether in office, out of office, staffer, lobbyist, activist, into one ugly category.

Clinton no criminal conduct. What about lying under oath?

Clinton no criminal conduct. What about lying under oath? I think Silver means the illicit, extramarital conduct, not conduct that occured as an outgrowth of getting caught.

Now Sanford is saying that he won't resign because David didn't resign when he slept with Bathsheba.
It's one thing to make the argument that private affairs are private, it's another try to biblically justify your cling to power and act like a proud creep.

I think having sex may not have been the only thing he was doing down in Argentina. Did anyone ask him if he was licking toads, and if so, was his answer "I'm not NOT licking toads."

Oh no, they did go there to a David/Bathsheba statement (and op-ed in The State making the same connection). Nice article on Jenny Sanford's statement in Newsweek www.newsweek.com/id/203875?from=rss

What was he doing, trying to out-Bible reference his wife? Mrs. Sanford's statement was incredible. I trust that her strengths as a role model will result in her boys being just the kind of men she desires them to be. What grace and character at such a difficult time.
