Or you could join the band and play the trombone, that would ensure you a front row seat. Worked fine for me -- including the NCAA's for Don Reid's shot and Nat Burton's shot.

Hey young one - when you're older, you'll understand. They've given 4 years to the campus - that right there makes them just as respectable of fans as you and the other people who populate the front row.
And you are placing WAAAAY too much emphasis on how important you people in the front row are to both the team, the basketball program, and the school in general. Trust me, you aren't the keepers of Hoya Fandom. Are the Cameron crazies called that because of the people in the front row? absofrigginlutely not. theyre called the crazies because (while i hate saying this) the ENTIRE section is loud and boisterous. the front row is all nice and well, but you arent going to be the face of the hoya faithful. we get respect when the entire section comes out and cheers their asses off for a great program, which will happen tonight. not because we have two rows of people who look stupid in wigs. espn aint gonna give us respect because of you and the other people, bro. get over yourself.
And, I get the back of the seniors in the fight, if there is one. I'll come at you as ball of hair, and, and teeth, and, and... fingernails!

I have changed my tune 007, but I also don't feel like it's life or death by any means. What can I say, I see both sides of the argument. I agree that it sucks, giving them the front rows...taking those seats from other fans, but something HAS to be done to get them involved. Turning a game (a very WINNABLE) that is on TV into a social activity for spring semester seniors is a great idea conceptually. Think about it: good game, TV, seniors having fun together = a few more diehard fans amongst the "soon to be alumni" base.
We constantly harp on the young alumni section as being a quit bunch of golf-clappers, but you have to remember the age in which they attended GU. I include this senior class as part of this generation of GU students, who never really knew basketball success at GU and only had a handful of heros (Sweets, Scruggs, Bras, um, errr, and I 'm done)
The current seniors enterred school at GU and immeadiately had to put up with the arguably the worst era of Hoya basketball in its history. Tough to be a fan of the program then...not saying its right to stop supporting the team, but why not give them some reason to come back.
The energy and attitude of the frosh is greatly appreciated and has really energized the campus, but as a product of the dark ages (class of 2002) I have a soft spot for those who's careers at GU overlapped almost entirely with the Esh Era...and the hope-crushing pattern of failure. They are a precious few who survived a dark age a Hoya fan. You will note the majority of those who signed the petition re: Esh were from the classes '01 to '05.
These are the scarred, the battered Hoyas and many were too weak to make it through and gave up. We need to take them by the hand and lead them back. Perhaps this isn't the best way, but don't lash out at them because you don't get to sit in your regular seat for one game. You can not possibly comprehend how scarred some classmates of mine are about Hoya basketball. We arrived at school, only to have JTII retire before winter break even rolled around.
Ours is a pessimistic generation that has trouble believing that the Esh-mentality and attitude have passed and we are in a new time.

I actually e-mailed the Hoya Blue president about this, and he said that this will exactly be the case: Rows 6-10 (or something like it) will be reserved for seniors, and the 1st five rows will be open for whomever. Hopefully this will quell some of the worrying, but I doubt it. Boo. I wanted a fight! Fight or tire roll, but no children's musical chairs.

I actually think the student section would be much more boisterous if the loudest fans were in back of the on court section, or possibly scattered. I don't expect anyone to give up front row, but hey, if that's what you are really concerned about, the fact that your cheers are pointed away from the rest of the students isn't helping.

Ok, sox and watsonry, I can understand that you dont have to have face paint on and all to be a great fan, but why do you have to go the complete opposite way and start claiming that someone is an idiot and not a real fan if they do that stuff.
You guys can think you're too cool for face paint or whatever, but I dont understand the mentality. How does someone look like an idiot for supporting their team that much at a basketball game?

The media sluts in my day (98-99 I think) dressed up funny and cheered to get in front of the camera. It was obvious. They didn't cheer that hard when the camera wasn't on them; sometimes their wacky gear had nothing to do with GU. When the rest of the student section did things like mustaches for Esh or towels as a tribute to Jr., these are the folks who still dressed their way.
They were annoying and bad fans.
In 95-96, when we were by far the loudest in my four years, no one really dressed up. And we cheered for the team. No one bothered following the cameras around mugging for them, like HB did.
I have no idea what the current crop of front row people are like. But it wouldn't kill to be a few rows back.

wait...show us the picture of intimidation again? No just kidding, I think its great that you have a passion for the team and I think you should be in the front row and I actually do agree that tv coverage does like shots of people dressed up, that said, hopefully the crowd will be dressed retro tonight so it wont matter who is in the front row.

Second, I feel bad for present day seniors...they don't have block party, tailgating is curbed, there is no pub on campus and Champs is a hip "lounge" now while the Tombs is getting inundated with underclassmen...I mean come on, give them one night. They don't get much anymore. tombs is letting in underclassmen? with bad IDs? wow that blows. although at least there won't just be senior geeks there now, and maybe some underclasswoman tail... as for guhoya and tbird you guys are operating at the Premier Level of Douchitude right now...i mean i would love to see some drunk and rowdy seniors smack around the kids with the wigs and the face paint and the capes - I was one of the guys making fun of the front row toolbags when i was in school boozing from the higher rows - hell i still cheered my balls off, but i just didn't care as much about being on the jumbotron...get a life fellas - this is about basketball no a bunch of pimply-faced geeks with a couch in the student section - nothing will make you cool.

GUHoya2007:
Not questioning you passion, nor did I say you were an idiot. I just don't appreciate your holier than thou attitude and I am giving you the impression the majority of people have of the front row kids, what you do with that is your perogative.

I have to say that the "Media Sluts" were lame and only showed up for games on TV -- there were a lot more of them in those days. They had stupid outfits that had nothing to do with the team and often spent time creating "B roll" for the camera man -- ie cheering while facing into the camera off to the side while ignoring the game...so ESPN could air the footage during TOs.
Not saying those are the same as those doing it these days, because they were clearly only there to get on TV.

007 and others,
See this as a challenge and an opportunity to get others involved in the team. Don't view it as a personal slight. We are all Hoyas and you should embrace the influx of new fans. Lead them in cheers. Lead the back of the pack in cheers. Make noise and have fun. This isn't about you, this is about Gtown as a whole.

Being a good fan or bringing a good atmosphere to the game does not necessarily entail stripping ones dignity in favor of face paint and wigs, nor does it ever entail a holier than thou attitude. We want a cohesive student section, yet the front row is dominated by a dress up clique that thinks they are "better" than the other fans. I absolutely agree with you here. We need cohesiveness in the student section, and not a hierarchy. It doesn't matter where you sit, or how early you get there before the game. As long as you're there, you're cheering loud, and you're wearing the "We Are Georgetown" shirt, you're a good fan and a friend in my book. Just because I try to get there early to reserve front row seats doesn't make me a better fan than anyone else. It's just my choice to do that. And by the way, I wear a wig and my aviator glasses to every game because I think it's fun. If you think that makes me an idiot or indignified, so be it, that's your opinion. I could go into a long diatribe about what makes a good fan and my experiences at the games, but I won't because honestly I just don't feel like it. It's just a game, people, let's not take it too seriously. Let's just show up and cheer loud on Retro Night, regardless of where you are sitting. It's as simple as that.

Just to let you know, the current front row people aren't like that at all, so you shouldnt make assumptions. We are cheering the loudest the entire time and trying to get everyone involved in the cheering. I don't think we're better than anyone else, and we are definitely not after the camera or anything. We just want it to be extremeley loud and exciting and we want the team to win, sorry if anyone got a different impression from me.
Im offended though when people assume that anyone who dresses up or paints their face isn't a true fan but just a media slut. Can't we add a little more excitement to the fun of attending games?

"Premier Level of Douchitude," ... genius, I love that expression! That said, I think we are being a bit hard on guhoya right now. I think its great that people like him get into the game and we need more people to show that type of enthusiasm. The only thing is that you shouldnt think you are a better fan just because you dress up every night. That is for some people, others work and dont have time to do that every game so dont blame them for not getting there early etc. I remember when I was a student it wasnt that I wouldnt have like to sit in the front row but just that I had late classes or did extracurricular stuff, i.e worked at the corp, gusa etc so I couldnt get to the games so early and by the time I got there all the seats were taken up. Anyway, I think one game a year, esp against seton hall is not much to ask you to give up so that some others can sit front row. You might actually be suprised how much they know and care about the team.

No one is accusing you...they are merely pointing out what has been the case in the past, when some people were more concerned about being in the front row than supporting the team.
You associate yourself with the definition when, and only when, you get defensive. Trust me, no one is doubting your street cred 007, we all know what colors you bleed. Sit back and tone down the outrage, righteous indignation never plays well.
