On the bright side, probably better for Patrick to go to another league and get PT and develop. Although the pay would be nice riding pine for 400K, I think you would get more out of playing or at least being on a winning championship caliber team so you get a sense for how to operate long term.

Jerome James is a very talented player who has been injured and hasn't been in shape since. If i were an exec. I would take a player like PEJr on my time even for the intangibles. You mean to tell me, nobody could use a player like him. There are some who are in the league who do NOTHING and get paid.

Jerome James is a very talented player who has been injured and hasn't been in shape since. Really? He'll be 33 next month. He's averaged 13 minutes per game and 4ppg/3rpg for his career. He hasn't played more than 45 games since the 04-05 season and played more than 60 games in a season only twice. With those types of numbers, you gotta go with the young guy.

Let me try to explain why the Knick base is "over-reacting" to this latest decision.
While it is true the past decisions made by NYK management were worse than this decision, the fan base was sold on the idea a new GM and coach were going to change everything. That is why the reaction by Knick fans has been so "over the top." A decison like this just reflects once again, the knicks do not give a sh*t about their fan base and would rather save $400K (which is chump change versus the contracts and decisons made in the past) than bring in a guy who at least makes the fans feel like the knicks care. Now I know nothing has changed with walsh and dantoni, and now I do not care about them.
Also to say Roberson is somehow equal or greater in value to Ewing is ridiculous. Roberson is a complete waste and he is gunner that you can sign to 10 day contract any time you want from the DL. What you will not find is a hyper-athletic forward that plays with passion. You can find passionate guys in the NBA and plenty of athletes, but when you find both in a young guy it is typically worth a few hundred grand and a roster spot.
The fact remains very few NBA teams make this decision. Ewing is definitley an NBA player.

He's also a legacy to one of the greatest Knicks of all time. Accepting the proposition that neither Roberson nor Ewing puts the Knicks over the top (or even into the playoffs) this one was a no-brainer. The good feelings alone make him the choice.
In typical fashion, Knick Management acted like they had no brain.

Amen, not to mention, you will not find a hyper-athletic forward that plays with passion...and who happens to be the son of your greatest player ever. That is a PR dream for a team that desperately needed one. Those kind of opportunities don't come around very often for franchises. It's not like PEJr would be the sullen guy on the end of the bench not playing; he'd be the vocal, chest bumping, hardest working, practice player ever...and when he got to check into a game, watch out, the Garden would erupt.

Perhaps the Knicks were thinking that keeping Ewing would only bring in revenue if he were going to be out on the floor for enough time to allow him to showcase his athleticism and make plays. Since that was doubtful, they kept players they knew would be good practice players for their starters instead of keeping PEJr as a development project, which might benefit another team if he didn't develop into a significant contributor prior to the end of his contract or which might prove fruitless if they found a draft pick who they felt would immediately fill that position in the next two years.
Right now he'd be good for a team that needed to fill a slot on a "B" set based on fast-breaks/showtime. Alternately, he has a great chance to be really good for a team after a year or two in the DL or in Europe working on his shot and filling out his frame just a bit to better hold his position on D vs pro bigs. Then he can contribute as a 3 or a 4 in the NBA, depending on the set -- height isn't the only thing that makes a good PF -- and those athletic dunks and blocks will certainly draw the fans once he's out on the floor.

That may be their grok, but who do you want as a practice player? A long, highly active defensive guy who does what you want or a Roberson/James, etc.?
If Pat misses an open shot in practice, the staff can pretend it went in (and so can opposing players). You can't adjust for defense as easily.

Good point SF. They may have gone with experience being better for practice/role-playing, though. You too, lic. I've been doing that since before I ever met you. I'm kind of a natural devil's advocate.

It's truly ironic that the Knicks got rid of exactly the kind of hard working, defensive minded young player that they have sorely lacked the past few years. It's one of the reasons why they have been an embarrassment to the NBA over that period of time.

If they wanted a practice player, they would have kept Patrick. End of discussion. As it is they'll be paying James to be a practice player and I'm willing to put the over under on the number of suicides, drills, scrimmages and weight room sesssions he participates at this year at 3. I'd still take the under.

Typical, but terrible, decision by the Knicks. I would bet PE Jr. lands on another NBA team this year.

I live in CT and ive been listening to WFAN all day and they been talking about what a bad decision it was to cut Ewing Jr all day. What the Knicks needed now more than ever was an energy guy, even if he wasnt in the rotation at least as a develpoing practice player to push the guys and help them become a team. Even the crowd was chanting pat-rick ewing when ever he got the ball. As bad as the knicks have been the past 3 years the management could have at least threw the fans a bone and kept Ewing, Bad move on the knicks part. But then again what have they dont right lately.

Maybe the following was simply in response to the bad PR the Knicks are getting, or maybe they actually mean this. Either way, see below: Knicks Will Keep Eye On Ewing Jr. Patrick Ewing Jr. might have been the most heralded final cut in the NBA and his departure, while a major topic of debate on Internet message boards, may not exactly signal the end for him as a Knick. "We'll keep our eye on him," Mike D'Antoni said, "we'd love to have him back."
The Knicks cut Ewing Jr. because of a numbers crunch with guaranteed contracts and Donnie Walsh's refusal to offer buyouts to unwanted players. -- Newsday
