Wow, the Red Sox managed to give up Sanchez, Ramirez and Meredith all in the space of a few months? That's really, really, really, really, really bad. And you can throw in Andy Marte, as well, although he hasn't proven himself to the extent the others have. When was the last time a team gave up so much minor league talent that then paid dividends for the other teams so quickly? Way to go, BoSox.
According to the Padre radio announcers, right handed hitters are batting .105 against Meredith this season. How ridiculous is that?

Beantown makes some fair points, but it is awfully easy to be critical of moves that did not work in hindsight without remembering the circumstances of each. You cannot chalk up all the Sox' problems to bad luck, but you sure can attribute some. Cubs fans will dispute, but I believe no one could have predicted Clement/Renteria/Crisp flaming out so badly, and I will also hold out hope for Beckett, as he has still shown some flashes. I think some serious questions are due the pitching coaches WRT Beckett, Hansen, Delcarmen, etc. As for the oft-cited losses of Sachez, Ramirez, Meredith, and Bard, I do believe the strength of the AL vs. NL needs to be given a bit more respect. For just one example, let's look at this comparison from Seth Mnookin's excellent blog: Pitcher A: 7-0, 2.82 ERA, 1 save, 8.91 K/9, and a batting average against hovering around .200 in 8 starts and 14 relief appearances over 63.2 innings. Pitcher B: 7-2, 2.80 ERA, 0 saves, 5.78 K/9 and a batting average against of .213 in 16 starts and 1 relief appearance encompassing 109 IP Those two pitchers don’t sound hugely different, right? Pitcher 1 has some relief appearances mixed in, significantly more strikeouts per IP, and averages about a third of an inning more per start, but besides that the stats are more or less identical. If you haven’t guessed by now, pitcher 1 is an amalgam of Josh Beckett (4-0, 2.83, .165 BAA), Jon Lester (3-0, 2.45 ERA, .241 BAA), Craig Hansen (1-0, 4.50 ERA, .250 BAA in 6 appearances), and Manny Delcarmen (1 save, 2.57 ERA, .231 BAA in 8 appearances) versus the National League. Pitcher 2 is Anibal Sanchez. (Sanchez, in his two AL starts, was 1-0 with a 6.30 ERA and a .326 BAA.) www.sethmnookin.com/blog/2006/09/08/fine-i-was-wrong-ill-admit-it-sweet-sweet-yummy-crow/
