Attending 6 Catholic ceremonies last year places you well ahead of me, so I am not sure I am qualified to comment.

Given the comparatively limited resources of the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates, are the Cubs the worst franchise in baseball? For all the "fire Dusty" talk circulating this city, how the hell does Andy McPhail still have a job? Ultimately, he runs this ship.

Firing Dusty is an important tourniquet to ensure no more damage can be done to Cedeno, Murton, and the variety of young pitchers that are passing through Wrigley this summer. Surgery still needs to be performed to initiate and implement novel ideas like an organizational philosophy, talent evaluation, player development, and effective coaching.

So I witnessed last night's meltdown from section 206, and a sorry experience it was. Truly dreadful performance. The Cubs gave the Brew Crew every run they scored through sheer stupidity - continuing their unfortunate trend of inventing yet again new ways to express that stupidity. Of course, there were also several examples of their normal, ordinary stupidity on display as well, such as Neifi popping up to the 2nd baseman with a runner on 3rd and 1 out in the top of the 8th, or Ryan Dempster walking the go ahead run in the 9th. Why I bother showing up, I do not know. I suppose it's idiots like me that perpetuate this mediocrity (or usually worse) by refusing to hit the Tribune Company where it really hurts - in the wallet - by continuing to go the park to watch bad baseball.

Unfortunately, season tickets are pre-paid.
Fortunately, I leave for 5 weeks in Europe next week.
I'm also sitting out the White Sox series in favor of copious tailgating at Alpine Valley for Dave Matthews Band weekend.

So I have the afternoon off and am tuned into WGN. With Damien Miller on second, Dusty Baker just made the sage decision of walking the ever-dangerous Brady Clark with two outs to get to the pitcher. What?

Austin, if you followed the Cubs on a daily basis, maneuvers such as that would no longer faze you. They are just part of our landscape here on the North Side. In other words, be glad that you don't.

Last night I watched a Tivo'd episode of American Chopper instead of the Cubs. I will not post on them again until something truly special happens. (By special I mean fire sale, starting with the manager and front office.

Apparently the Cubs are so irrelevant now that I can go to Europe for 5 weeks and not miss one post to this thread.
Meanwhile, I will feel the direct impact of the latest airline terror threat tonight when I am forced to go to the White Sox - Yankees game. My cousin's friend can't get out of Dallas and I agreed to be the backup.

I will briefly suspend my boycott of this thread to bid its namesake farewell. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out of town, Neifi. I suspect, though, that Hendry is already plotting how he can get him back in the offseason.

Sorry, Gold, this is absurd. As great as Maddox has been for the Dodgers, you guys should be doing cartwheels that you got Isturis. He may never be a great hitter, but the guy is a legitimate gold glove shortstop, and he's certainly improved enough over the years that he is no longer an automatic out.

I'm not seeing the improvement. From what I understand, he wasn't playing hurt in that 2005 season, and .322 is about as horendous as it gets for slugging in 444 at-bats. Plus, .302 is looking very familiar.
AGE YEAR TEAM G AB BA OBA SLG 21 2001 TOR-A 46 134 .269 .279 .388 22 2002 LA_-N 135 439 .232 .253 .303 23 2003 LA_-N 158 558 .251 .282 .315 24 2004 LA_-N 159 670 .288 .330 .381 25 2005 LA_-N 106 444 .257 .302 .322 26 2006 LA_-N 32 119 .252 .302 .353 26 2006 CHI-N 16 58 .241 .302 .276
(I'll figure out how to do tables on here & fix the formatting later.)
Now, if the Cubs get a huge bat or two in the off season, never play Jock against lefty pitchers, and Little Caesar bats 8th every day, he might be OK. But with him batting #2? Rally killer every time.

Actually, he was playing hurt in 2005, prior to being shut down. There was actually considerable doubt as to whether he would play in 2006 at all, which was one of the main reasons the Dodgers signed Furcal.
2004 was certainly a significant step up for him. I don't see how you can deny that. I do agree with you totally, though, that he should bat eighth, at least until he shows that 2004 wasn't an aberation. Just don't discount how important it is to have a shortstop with great range who gets to everything. Sure, I would rather have Jeter or Tejeda, but if the Cubs are smart they will beef up their hitting, and then Cesar should be an integral part of their line-up.

I haven't been here for a while, but I thought it was important to note that the Cubs are pretty amazing to have gotten rid of my public enemy #1, only to replace him with a guy who hits about the same, but is able to really embrace his Cubness by getting on the DL right away.
On the bright side, I was at the Sox game for my firm outing. I had about 12 beers, and the Sox lost. Can't complain.

McPhail is gone....that's a start. So's Dusty. Too bad it's too late for the Prior and Wood. I assume that Girardi is people's choice to manage the Cubs next year?

I suppose Girardi would be fine - seems to have done a fine job down in Florida with a young team, and also told off his boss during a game, which is nice.
That said, with the current make-up of the Cubs' roster, I'm not sure it will matter who the manager is (see, e.g., Dusty Baker). I don't think Dusty is a great manager, but this season was not his fault. Dusty will be better off wherever he manages next - the resolution of his situation has to be good for both sides, especially Dusty's.
How Hendry is the only person to keep his job in this situation is beyond me. He must have pictures of Dennis Fitzsimons (Tribune Company CEO) doing something illegal.

Have fun with Girardi up there...Did a fantastic job with the marlins bunch of rookies and its 15 million dollar payroll, but dont get too excited. There is more to his firing than just Jeffrey Loria being the worst owner in all of sports. Girardi and Beinfest (the gm) did not have a speaking relationship, and Girardi had MANY questionable moves this year that hurt the team (i.e. letting Josh Johnson play after a 2 hour rain delay). Clearly he can change the attitude of a clubhouse and is a general in the clubhouse, but it'll be interesting to see how Cubs management deals with his stubborness.
