If I was a betting man I'd take the Marquette -17.5. Last game of a fairly long road trip. BE opener of a top 10 team who came off an ugly loss. A team that likes to pressure the ball handlers no less which is a huge weakness of our Hoyas as has been pointed out many times. I don't recall who said we matchup well with Marquette- it likely was traversb or boya - because it's so far from reality. Hopefully we put together our best 40 minutes of the year- but I'm preparing myself for a beat down. It’s the best matchup of the Top 4 BE teams for us. Of course it’s not a great matchup which is why we are 18.5 point underdogs. I was trying to provide a small bit of hope and yet still called too negative. The everything is great crowd is the most annoying on here because e they don’t provide anything other than next year it will all be fine with one new player and all the same main guys and I trust Cooley. As for why it’s the best matchup of the bunch they don’t have the inside presence/rebounding to kill us. I’d zone them up play Ryan more even next to Cook and tell them to crash the boards. If they hit 3 so be it. If we try to play them straight up Kolek is going to creat a layup like and alley oops all game. On the offense end I’d just do pick and pop. Shoot 40+ 3s and pray for the best. Hope to catch lighting in a bottle. I am planning on opening a bottle of lightning about 10 minutes before game time, hopefully it will help numb the hurt. |

We get to play the other annoying defensive PG right after Posh. How many picks will Sean Jones have on Epps and Brumbaugh for lay-ups tonight. Marquette is 18.5 favorites. We were 9 point favorites over American. Just shows how much closer we are to low majors than the top of the big East right now. Hopefully our guards take something away from their matchup with Kolek. Other than Kolek they aren’t the worst matchup for us. They don’t rebound well and they can’t shoot. hoyatalk like a ray of sunshine We have been forced to live in a dark cave for the last few years, TC. Sudden direct exposure to sunlight could well blind us all. |

Is suspended Ben Williams playing tomorrow? Is a GU game curing that ill? He was already back He is "back", but he has had two disciplinary issues already, did not play against Cornell due to a coach's decision, and it is not clear whether he will be on the bench today. |

While the money grab desertion by Suckacuse has diminished the importance and fever-pitch intensity of the rivalry, let us never forget. Manley Field House is officially closed. The 1981 BET held at Syracuse; Syracuse students stealing the banner of the DC radio station airing the Hoya games and parading it through the streets - only to have it rescued by BC fans(?!) "Ewing Can't Read" signs and a banana thrown against the back of the backboard while he was at the line. Michael Jackson dropping 31 as a freshman to win at the Dome. Pearl Washington hitting a go ahead jumper with 8 seconds left, only to have little Charles Smith dribble through all 5 Orangeboys to hit the buzzer teardrop over Rony Seikaly. The Michael Graham slap/punch after Andrew Hawkins barely missed Graham's face with a wild swinging elbow wrestling for a rebound in 1984 BET; Froggy Paparo initially ejects Graham, then reduces it to a technical, causing Boeheim to later throw a chair and storm out of post game presser. Ewing banging Pearl for rebound position in 1985 BET, Pearl then punches Patrick in the ribs and Patrick retaliation punch misses the mark. Pearl last second jumper beating Hoyas at the Dome in '85. Pops gets a technical from each of the 3 refs back-to-back- to-back during first half in 1990, waves arms to booing crowd as he leaves the court. He just hasn't played at a level that's forced his coaches to put him in for extended minutes. Remember - that frontcourt was really rough (Big Tim > Malcolm > Ryan), and Ryan got that 8p/6r (it wasn't 12/8) with Tim on the sidelines for a few weeks. The very next game (Tim still out) against Marquette, Ryan had a DNP-CD. Short of an injury, nothing about Ryan's first 2.5 seasons suggests he's gonna play a very big role He played 12 minutes and got 8 points: www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/boxscore/_/gameId/401371995No one is suggesting a big role for Ryan. But, if a freshman Ryan can get 12 minutes, why can’t junior Ryan help now with 10-12 mins. to keep the starters fresh, aggressive and out of trouble? How about putting him in the middle of the lane when the opposing center sucks from the perimeter? Sometimes our defense looks like the embarrassing open-lane-highway defense. How many TCU drives had no Hoya close to the kente? Cut some of those bunnies and we win that game. I don't have a particular problem seeing Ryan get a few minutes in the right match-ups. But Ryan defending the 3 is not what concerns me - it is him getting overpowered down low by any strong inside presence. When I watch him I still get that "baby giraffe" impression - gangly, not quite on balance, easily pushed around. |

Watch the presser. Cooley was asking the players if they needed a rest and they kept sayiing no. The players were really insync, which you don't want to disrupt and coach called that out. If players show they are tired or ask to come out, if not go with what works. The official time outs and TCU timouts were called in perfect spots to not need to have the five come out. It let the five rest and get ready to dig in and keep going. I don't know how many times you can do that. Cooley went with this quite a bit at Providence and it would work rather well. I've talked with Providence players about that and they liked it, but they also know there was good depth that when they came out the level of play would be relatively consistent and when they would reenter the game they would pick-up where they were. Cooley's focus on team and doing what is good for the team, like the extra pass and pass to setup the assist (Rowan is insanely good at this but isn't a normal publicly tracked stat (Hoyas now track it)). There are eight players who are solid contributors on the Hoyas and hopefully one or two more will prove valued. But, this is the team, the eight. Cook, Massoud, Styles, and Epps are the likely starters and the fifth spot may rotate, but wiith the starting four behind them is youth that will grow and mature. A solid eight that functions as a solid team, is an insanely great thing to see. If there are five that gel insanely well in a game and have the stamina and rest to keep going that is awesome. Likely it will be a different five or four throughout the season in games. What do you think the players are going to say? No, I’m tired and I want to get some rest? Is that what a competitor would do? Short rotations in the OCC against most opponents (because the team cannot put other teams away) is a recipe for disaster for late February and March, esp. in a league like the BE. If you say, who cares about March, then the team’s focus should be in developing all scholarship players for next year, not just five (with two of them not eligible next year). We need all 9 scholarship players as seasoned and fresh as possible for BE play. Against TCU, Cooley tightened the rotation. Five players had more than 30 mins, and Bristol, Fielder, Rowan and Ryan saw their minutes decrease or disappear. Is this what Cooley will do when we play TCU-level teams or better? Other than alleged cupcake Coppin St, that’s what the team will face the rest of the season. Good intentions and all, the main 5 will not survive the BE grind at that pace. I generally agree that we can't overwork the horses. Keep in mind that Rowan was coming off an extended illness, and often looked it. And this was not a game for Ryan's limited potential contributions. |

TCU is playing in the jersey defense on every man. Hoyas not breaking loose. Because we can't. Power 5, mid major, low major - if you have athletes and pressure is, we can't drive. They extend the defense and we get no clear looks outside. |

That article mentions a few pertinent facts about that game but leaves out a few others: (1) was a big-deal-at-the-time regional tv game, (2) was our second rout of HC that season— beat them by 14 innthr Holiday Festival in the Garden when HC was a Top ten team, and (3) great bedsheet sign in one end zone “Nail the Loss on the Cross” (complete with a Spraypainted Cross). Fails to mention the game started at like 4pm and doors opened at noon with 25 cent 20 ounce beers for sale. Played golf with Esherick a while ago before his head coaching stint (quite the stick BTW/finished on the runner-up team in our 45th reunion alumni outing), and he said most of what he remembers of the game is that when the team came out for warm ups the stands were packed and in fans were in, uh, a VERY good/rowdy mood already.... Ah, those were the days. Finished undefeated at home on the year with the win, on the heels of two epic one point comeback wins earlier that month (1) over Detroit (with three future NBA players), which had the nation’s longest win streak of 13-14 games at the time, and (2) an OT win over GW earlier that week after Esherick tied it with about a 40 footer at the buzzer. Sadly the day after the HC win we spit the bit at Fordham to blow any real chance of an ncaa bid and then were routed by VCU at Smith Center in the ECAC South game (star Derrick Jackson couldn’t play because an ulcer acted up) that could’ve provided a path to an automatic bid had we won and then beaten the winner of the ECAC North game (as we did in ‘75 and ‘76). My wife hates that this stuff I remember and yet other “more important” things are totally lost in time… As long as we remember the things that matter TO US! |
