The difficulty with holding Maravich to 20 was leaving Danny Hester alone under the basket. He had 30. How often was Pistol Pete outscored by a teammate?

Villanova, in large measure, lucked in to the Jay Wright era. After a successful stint at Hofstra he was on the verge of taking the Rutgers job. At the same time Steve Lappas was going into what all knew would be his final year at Villanova. Seeing the handwriting on the wall he had a "you can't quit me I fire" moment and jumped to UMass. Jay then went to 'nova and the rest is history. He's a better coach than anyone knew.

1981. The poll was just a Top 20 at that time. Fun anomalous historical fact from the ‘81 tournament (which of course DFW knows but others might not). Syracuse won that tournament in the Carrier Dome in triple OT/beat Nova (I think)/huge win for them/players carried off court by fans had yada yada. And the next day HOYAS get a bid to tourney and the Orangemen get squadoosh (because conference had not yet completed two years of play the Big East did not get an automatic bid). The howls from upstate were delicious... I love that story.

I recall Dikembe was a scholarship student his freshman year and joined the team his sophomore year -- he was a Yates intramural legend. Fun times! I had the pleasure of playing against him there. I had the pleasure of grabbing his arms so he wouldn’t put it on the rim (intramural rule: no dunking). I had the pleasure of stealing one of his outlet passes and nailing a 3 over his head. IIRC we lost to Dikembe 36-16. My guess is Dikembe would have been one of a precious few whose games were hindered by the intramural ban on dunking.

On the bright side, Billy Garrett is not back for his 9th year.

Not presupposing that either would happen but does this board think we'd be better off, hypothetically, getting in and losing in Dayton or making a multiple game run in the NIT? I believe the 1978 NIT run to the semis was a growing experience for both that team and the program. It was followed by 14 straight NCAA appearances (which, I realize, were helped along by some pretty good players).

Anyone going to be in Omaha for the game? Where is the local pre-game watering hole? Omaha? Big ask.

I would be remiss if I did not recognize a class move by Jay Wright pregame: he and Ewing were talking and then Pat pointed at the baseline. Jay shook his hand then half ran (as fast as a guy with a slim fit GQ style suit with the jacket buttoned can) to JTJr and spent a couple minutes talking to him. Jay is a truly great guy. He's a neighbor of mine and still very down to earth and charismatic. Only thing that annoys me about him is he walks in the building politicking to the refs. He just never stops with those guys, and as a result it seems like Nova gets an inordinate amount of favorable calls. Pat is getting close to the right balance on this front; still wish he'd whine a little more, but it's just not his nature. Agree with your thoughts on Jay. Good guy but it's gotten to the point that he seems to feel he's entitled to every call. He's either whining or smiling sarcastically; he's wrong in most cases. Post game, however, he is invariably gracious (also afflicted with the coachspeak stammer).

Let's try to hold Gillespie, an average guard if there ever was one, under 30. Come to that under 20? His average is 11.6.

6'7" Wing from Orangeville ON Prep. 4 Star by 247 says Georgetown is recruiting him hardest. HS teammate of Michigan's Ignas Bradzeikis. Potential, but unlikely, reclassification to 2019.
