Dumb question: Are there any rules on when a scholarship can be offered? I notice from our chart that we have apparently offered all the way down to the class of 2010, which means that we must have offered to a high school freshman (rising sophomore). Is this common? Once a scholarship has been offered, can the offer be rescinded, assuming there hasn't been an acceptance?

You can verbally offer a scholarship to pretty much anyone. We could make an offer to Pat Ewing's just born child. You can pretty much pull the offer at any time. Around the time that the player signs the NLI, it would be considered bad form to pull the scholarship unless the kid does something. At some point during their senior year, they sign a document regarding their financial aid -- that's the first time there's some legal obligation, I think.
Offering a scholarship to someone before they can sign an NLI is an incredibly vague an informal process. Often players will claim an offer or think they have one when they don't yet.

I know Renaldo's older brother and he has a good head on his shoulders. From the little I've seen of Renaldo, it seems he posesses the same

He Lance went toe to toe last night. Great entertainment. Both are beasts and 1 and done. It was funny when Lance tried to guard Samuels in the post(no chance). It is funny how people are all over the place on Evans. I do not think highly of his game. He reminds me of a poor-mans Mayo, and I can't stand Mayo's game. But the great thing is now all of these kids have to go to college for a year, so they will either shine or get exposed. During the game they were talking about how John Reik's hero is Deke. It is ashame that Reik can't control his own future, otherwise he would be a Hoya. He is not close to NBA ready.

Gotta love the fact that Rivals has us with the top incoming PF (Monroe) and C (Sims) in the Big East. Big Man U!

As much as I like Henry, Samardo has to be on that BE list. Can't move GM, so it has to be Henry at the 5.

id, they did it strictly by position. They rate Monroe over Samuels and Sims over any other center. It's not supposed to be a Top 5 recruits.

That may be true, but I think most services rate Samuels as a center, despite the fact that he is only 6'8".

I just got this from the scout blog about Reik: "Jeff Goodman dropped some not so good knowledge this afternoon. John Riek, the headlining recruit at this weekend's National Prep Invitational, won't play. Over 12 NBA teams requested credentials for the event specifically to watch Riek. Not going to happen; a knee injury will keep him out of action."
IMO his coaches/handlers are trying to hide him from the NBA scouts as long as possible. But he will have to play against real competition sooner or later.

SF,
That's what I was saying about not moving GM, but Samardo could play the five. Immovable in the post.

Bruce Pearl has also been up to Winchendon to watch Riek. With NBA scouts being shut out of Winchendon due to threatened fines from the league office, it isn't a stretch to think Riek will end up in college ball. The air seems to be coming out of the Riek-NBA bubble right now as far as next year is concerned due to the knee issue, Riek staying out against better competition, and limited skills at this time.
Add in that his situation is very strange. Nobody seems to know how old he is. His name is reported differently everywhere - John Riek some of the time, John Riek Suas other times, and John Dong Teik Riek Suas if you frequent the Winchendon official site. Then, throw in the issue of not firming up whether he is a junior, senior, or postgraduate.
In all honesty, UCONN is not a bad choice for a big. If I remember correctly, Okafor was not a highly touted recruits, and, in terms of physical pedigree, he does not bring anything particularly special. Yet, he turned out to be a fantastic college player and has made a good living in the NBA. Hilton Armstrong is a one time boogeyman who turned into an NBA player almost overnight, it seemed. Then, you have the Jake Voskuhls and Travis Knights.
Now, I by no means like Calhoun, but I can see where someone like Riek is coming from. What perhaps is more interesting is what happens if Thabeet stays and Riek wants to go to college? All the best to him. He has a tremendous opportunity.

I agree about UConn as a destination, Jersey Ambassador, the 'surprise' above was facetious. Father Flanagan has already done the something similar with Thabeet (who seems destined to be a less talented Manute Bol). Okafor was an entirely different case - the guy had a very high GPA and finished early; sounds like Riek may have trouble getting a qualifying SAT primarily due to language difficulties.

I've never been impressed by Thabeet, but I guess some could have said the same thing about Hibbert after his frosh year - glimpses of potential, but not a sure bet. Thabeet's situation is a bit like Riek's, except Thabeet seemed to blow up during the high school season. For those following at home, Manute Bol now resides in Olathe, Kansas.

Reik would have to pass the SAT in late spring just to get into college. As far as GU is concerned, his game is just to mechanical for the offense. He would have been good in Pops system. The only way I could see him at GU is if he qualified, then told III that he is willing to stay in college and develop. He is much further behind Diop at this stage, and Diop was a late lotto pick during the "must draft a HS player era".
I wish him the best, but I see him taking a second year of post grad.
