No, he's not better. He has no clue how to run an offense and is barely adequate at scheming for defense. Despite what he inherited he has been at LSU for awhile and has not gotten better. I feel no sympathy for his "situation" because he coaches at a Big State School with Big State School Money at his disposal as well as facilities that a school like Gtown can only dream about. He is so lacking in charisma that the only players he can get are guys who are from Louisiana or certain parts of neigboring Texas. He has had a handful of McDAAs during his tenure and you can argue he didn't really develop any of them. There is a history of big time players going to his school and either leaving way too early or being headcases. That suggests he recruits (or can only get) clowns or morons to play for him or that he doesn't have firm control of his program (not because the players leave early but because of some of the attitudes of guys off the court). He coaches at a school that is not known for being a pillar of academic credibility which means he can get all sorts of wishful-thinking student athletes in. His X & O strategy during games is widely panned by SEC fans.

Some snippets from Scout:
1. From Orlando's Super Showcase:
Louisiana Select (2008 Greg Monroe) vs. Albany City Rocks
This one was a complete mismatch. But it did provide a good look at the versatility of 6-9 power forward Greg Monroe. The lack of competition didn’t deter coaches from Kansas, Duke, LSU, Louisville, Florida, Georgetown, and Georgia Tech from taking a peek.
Look, if you’re a coach watching Greg Monroe, you’re way past the evaluation stage. You just want to make your presence known and hope it helps in the recruitment of this stud.
We saw the entire arsenal from Monroe in this one. It started with terrific post position on the first possession that ended in an easy shot from point blank range. Next possession was a routine dunk after a catch and gather inside. Monroe also showed his passing ability in the open floor as he found his teammate for an easy layup. For a guy that big, he’s got a slick handle and also made a wonderful pass in traffic for a dunk.
All of this in the first three minutes of the game and then Monroe steps out and shows that at 6-9, he also has range as he cans a three and runs back smiling. The Louisiana Select star scored 9 of his team’s first 22 points. Greg could take a rest in this one as he and his teammates cruised to a victory over the Albany City Rocks. Monroe finished with 17 points while 6-8 Storm Warren also dominated inside with 19 points.
2. Louisiana Select vs. Blessed IJN
Greg Monroe again was a big part of why Louisiana Select was able to come back and advance to Thursday’s Quarterfinals (72-57). It was a hard fought 15-point win for the Louisiana-based team as their number one player put up 17 points.
Monroe was blocked a couple of times in this one but still couldn’t be stopped. Twice he turned a blocked shot into a dunk. While Miles Plumlee’s 6-10 frame was enough to bother Monroe at times, he still couldn’t reduce Monroe’s effectiveness on offense.
Monroe, ranked as the best power forward in the class of 2008 according to Scout.com showed countless reasons why in this one. His ball-handling was precise, he was active on the boards, his drives were with a purpose, and inside the paint he could not be stopped.
If there’s anything I can pick on with Greg it might be his defense. He gets a bit lackadaisical at times and I’m convinced if he puts his mind to it, he could be a force on the defensive end. Monroe strikes me as the type of kid who’s only going to get better.
It’s easy to see why he’s the hottest commodity in Orlando this week.

Georgetown has offered, according to Scout:
Another Indiana prospect UT is involved with is combo guard Eshaunte Jones of Fort Wayne North Side High School. He originally committed to Indiana last November, but will attend Hargrave Military Academy (Virginia) this fall and has reopened the recruiting process.
The 6-foot-4, 170-pound guard averaged 27.7 points per game as a junior and connected on 97 of the 233 shots (41.6) he took from three-point range. He is ranked No. 73 among all players in his class, but his AAU coach, Eric Vaughn, told Inside Mizzou publisher Jeff Erman he should be ranked much higher.
“I’d take him over almost any shooting guard in the country,” Vaughn stated. “The only three players I’d take before him are [2008 all-Americans] O.J. Mayo, Eric Gordon and Derrick Rose, regardless of class. And this isn’t just an AAU coach talking – I’ve been doing this a long time and have seen a lot of great players … I don’t know why he’s not a top-ten guy. There’s no better combo guard in America.”
The schools Jones is considering include: Georgetown, Indiana, Memphis, Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Tennessee. He plans to take official visits this fall and take his time announcing a decision.

Anybody seen this guy play:
Confidence. That's what Dennis Harris said is the difference with his game this month. The skilled 6-foot-10 big man had a huge second half for his Atlanta Celtics in an important win over Beach Ball Select and scored 15 points for his team.
Harris was aggressive around the basket as a scorer and rebounder. Seeing him play though in the paint was encouraging. The timing of his game was important. The gym was pack with coaches, several of whom where there to see him play.
The Atlanta Celtics-Beach Ball Select game brought out a number of coaches in the first round of the playoffs. Head coaches in the house for the game included Kelvin Sampson, Sean Miller, Roy Williams, Billy Gillispie, Leonard Hamilton, Central Florida's Kirk Speraw and Nevada's Mark Fox. Assistants from Florida, Texas, UCLA, LSU, Clemson, South Florida, Georgetown, Auburn, Wichita State, Rice, Memphis, South Carolina, Ohio State, Vanderbilt, UAB and Georgia.

Decision coming next week: J’Mison Morgan, a 6-foot-10, 275-pounder from Dallas South Oak Cliff High, on Tuesday told Rivals.com the schools after him the hardest are Kansas University, Alabama, Baylor, Georgetown, LSU, Texas and UCLA. He also has Kentucky, Texas A&M, Arizona, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Iowa State and Nebraska on his list. “It’s all open right now,” said Morgan, a former high school teammate of KU sophomore Darrell Arthur currently playing for Urban DFW Select. “I’m going to make a list of schools after this week. I want to decide on five schools and take my visits. The overall environment and playing time will be deciding factors.” www2.ljworld.com/news/2007/jul/25/jayhawk_recruits_plan_narrow_lists_soon/?sports

In addition to Jody Demling--Van Coleman of CSTV.Com/Hoopmasters is now reporting that Georgetown is recruiting Chris Singleton--a skilled 6'9 SF from Atlanta, GA.
Watched some clips of Singleton--and in one of his 3pt shots-he looks like Jeff Green in terms of how he shoot the ball. Same form on shot.
Singleton is one of the few guys I like as a backup option to the bigs we're seeing Hoyas after--he's very skilled and still has size/versatility to be a headache if he were to play in Hoya system. '08 is a down year overall-but Singleton is another option and a good one for Hoyas in '08 to recruit.

I don't see it as a down year really. There is alot of depth, but no real program changer, with the exception of Monroe. Of course last year had Gordon, Derrick Rose, Beasley, etc. So in comparison I guess it is. I think quality 2, 3 and 4-year players abound in '08. '09 is sick however.

J'Mison Morgan is currently playing at the Price Chopper Invitational in Kansas--he was being watched by Bill Self tonight and went up against Olek Cysz another big time recruit. Apparently Morgan didn't impress and had kind of an attitude according to fans on KU Scout site--but showed some nice post moves.
He's also been listed by some at Scout--including Frank Burlison and a few other sites as being 6'9 265 but still needing to drop some weight/get more toned.

Future Hoya Henry Sims had a huge game at the AAU Nationals yesterday--his team was knocked out in Round of 16, but in a game against TEAM STAT out of Florida, Henry led Baltimore Stars with 26 pts and had a dominating performance.
According to Rivals, Sims showed his full skill set by:
1. Hitting 3 pt shots 2. Hitting face up jumpers 3. grabbing rebounds out of his area due to his athleticism 4. played tough on the block
Sims often doesn't get the ball on his team--but nice to see what he does when they find him.

Thanks for the updates RDF and others.
It seems like GU is involved with a ton of kids right now. That is great news. The most important part of the college basketball season is right now- the recruiting process. I would estimate that determines 60-70% of your team's success. With GU being involved with so many quality players, they are going to sign talented guys- it's just a matter of who ends up going with the Hoyas. As long as that is the case, the program is going to continue to be successful.

A note on Team STAT. They have no size. Not to diminsh HS accomplishments, but they looked awful in Augusta.

The opposition's size doesn't matter when you are 6'11 and are making threes. As for rebounds, that's another story.

A 6'11" skinny shooter? Will "Scruggs Thuggs" ride again? One can only dream.
