Just got back from the game... whew! Trap game survived. A few thoughts...
-GREAT on-campus arena. ..Muir was there in front of me, taking notes I hope. And their fans came to cheer, no small feat for that team.
-I have respect for Cronin. He has that short, talentless team playing hard every night. Give him 2 yrs, theyll be back.
-Guys played well, but need to work on breaking pressure. Gonna see it often.
-Green and Sapp stars of the game- and Baby Doc with 2 3s!
-I and Fiancee of YB yelled all night, part of a 10 person GU section. Notice Cinci's FT pct. I yelled at them every time they shot in a quiet arena. Their student section, quite lively, chanted "Richard" at us at the end. Nice.
-Best comment from the crowd- "You think bc you pay 45K for college you are entitled- The Democrats are in power now!"
Work on press- on to Pitt...

But the ridiculous hyperbole about this being "our best offensive team ever" needs to pause while folks watch a re-run of a ton of offensive boards surrendered and turnovers, including a 10-second violation and at least one 5-second violation (maybe two?) failing to inbound the ball. I'll grant that our shooting percentage is excellent, and thank goodness for that. If you look at Pomeroy's numbers, yes, we are a below-average team when it comes to turning the ball over (# 239 in the nation). Even so, we still have the highest offensive efficiency rating in the country this year, and it would be the highest ever recorded in the four years Pomeroy has been tracking the stat were the season to end today. And it's not just the shooting percentage. What makes us tick on offense is the great shooting (99th percentile), together with remarkable offensive rebounding production (97th percentile). You don't have to agree that this is the best offensive team Georgetown has ever had. But given all the evidence, I don't understand why you think that conclusion is not only incorrect, but "ridiculous hyperbole" to boot.

But given all the evidence, I don't understand why you think that conclusion is not only incorrect, but "ridiculous hyperbole" to boot. From the point of view of actually Running an Offense, there is no doubt this is the best offensive team GU has had -- at least since Pops took over the program in 72/73 is it the most impressive group of talented ball players ever?? Well, maybe not. But if one were to discuss the best offensive teams in the JT-ESH-JT3 era, one could hardly leave the current team out of the discussion.

six turnovers by Wallace is unacceptable. While he was a strong scoring presence tonight, he MUST take better care of the ball. He has always been the guard that is the least comfortable on our squad in breaking real pressure, and I don't know what the answer to that is...as smart a basketball player as he is, he tends to throw away 2-3 passes inexplicably. we cannot have 12+ turnovers against Pitt or we WILL lose.

My two cents, having been at this game was that the Hoyas looked flat the first 10 minutes. As for Roy, there was always 2-3 Bearcats around him. And he took a pounding and it finally showed near the end on the one free throw. UC got away with a lot of pushing and elbows.
On UC's post game show, Cronin admitted they were baiting Rivers to take those two 3-pointers. He felt he was inconsistent and wouldn't come close.

FWIW, Cincinnati starts the game 5-5 from three, then goes 3-18 the rest of the game. I bet I could find a few 10-second violations in 1984 or 1985 game tape as well. I don't know about that--teams didn't press very often on Georgetown because Brown, Smith, and Jackson were expert ball handlers and they could not risk flooding the backcourt with Ewing up front. Expert is relative. My point is JT teams turned the ball over a ton. They just turned the other team over as well. But it wasn't like we were hummin' along without mistakes on offense in those years, not enough where considering this offense one of the best is "ridiculous" at least.

Remember that argument two years ago that teams had an advantage over us the second time they saw our version of the Princeton offense? Glad we're putting that theory to bed.

Worst. Officiating. Ever.
That crew should be indefinitely suspended. It's not that they called an uneven game vis a vis Gtown v Cincy, but they called the most inconsistent and ridiculous game I've ever watched in D1 basketball. They wouldn't call blatant block fouls, but then called 3-sec violations. They wouldn't call hacks by three players on a center, then called touch fouls on the offensive end. Pretty much, the worst officiating I've ever, ever seen. I hope to never see those guys ref another game in D1 again.
It's like MLB umpires, nobody cares if you call the stike zone tight or loose, just keep it consistent the whole game. These officials failed and should be punished.

Who looks more like a leprechaun -- Mick Cronin or Bobby Gonzalez? I swear those two were separated at birth, but Mick ain't doing himself any favors wearing a green suit. Ooooh, my lucky charms!

I believe we also clinched a first round bye tonight. Only Pitt, Louisville and Syracuse can finish ahead of us since we own the tiebreakers on Marquette and Notre Dame.

Um, no one on a GU board needs to speak of a green suit tonight! I refer to Broadus, of course, unless my eyes played tricks on me......

any road win is a good win, especially since we were sloppy with the ball and beaten on the boards by a tiny team.

It was a bad play -- 3 on 1 and you don't score? Should have passed the ball. I think it was Jeff as the trailer as well. I actually thought it was a good decision. It just had a bad outcome, which does happen on occassion. Other thoughts. As discussed in the thread on Roy, when teams gear their entire defense to denying the entry pass to Roy, we have successfully countered by shooting well. Roy passed the ball well and screened effectively out of the high post last night. He occupied their defense, which left the rest of our gets free to do what they do. When Cincy went on a 7-0 run in about a minute fueled by their press at around the 14 min mark of the second half, III made a key adjustment by putting Wallace in the front court and having Jeff assist with the ballhandling to break the press. From that point on, their pressure was overall far less effective. I think we had nine or 10 TO's first half, only 4 or 5 in the second, a couple of which came in that span. Jeff is just a wonderfully versatile ballplayer. Ilovescruggs already pointed out the baseline pass and homerun ball versus the press. Kudos to our coaching staff for again making in game adjustments which worked!

While his standing out in the middle of the court is annoying, you have to give some credit to Cronin. His kids played hard the whole game. Their pressure in the second half was outstanding. For them to have the sorry season they are having and still bring that kind of effort says a lot about him.
On to the Hoyas..... Sapp is really coming into his own. The announcers did make a good point that when our offense stagnates, Sapp creates with penetration. Sapp has embraced that role and I love the NY flair he brings. Sapp's defense has also been tremendous. With Sapp picking up his game, there truly isn't a single member of our starting five who can't absolutely burn you if you ignore him.
Play like crap on the road, win by 10. Sign of a very good team.
