And Pitt only beat SHU by three, so we win on the "less ugly win" side of the equation, both teams held their ends of the bargain and move to the showdown

Glad to see we tried a few different looks in the second half against the press, including the double-inbounds pass and the homer pass that sprung Bowman against Duke etc. last year. That puts my mind back right. If they're going to give you two easy points, take them!
Another great game by Jeff and Jesse too. Really wish that cradle-fake layup went down.

Another great game by Jeff and Jesse too. Really wish that cradle-fake layup went down. The announcers were saying this was a bad mistake. I also thought it was a great play. It shoulda went in.

It was a bad play -- 3 on 1 and you don't score? Should have passed the ball. I think it was Jeff as the trailer as well.

It was a bang-head-on-wall type of game, but in the end it was good to see the Hoyas win despite the sheer ugliness of it all. It's nice to know that we can slip up a bit and still win games comfortably.
The most worrying thing for me is that two small-ish teams have been able to almost completely shut Roy down on offense. Teams will watch these tapes before they play us - hopefully JTIII and company will be able to figure out a way to exploit that sort of Roy-centric defense. We have plenty of weapons on offense aside from Roy, but it'd sure be nice to have our best offensive weapon back.

Hard to say who is the more obnoxious sideline presence, Cronin or Bobby Gonzalez.
Nice win after a tough start. Jeff Green is awfully good. Has anyone in the country played as well as Green in February? I say no.

Hoyas came out very flat. I guess it's good we can win by 10 and look that bad. Bob Wenzel sucks. At one point, we're down 4 in the first, and he's saying Summers needs to have a big game if we're going to get back in it. How dare you talk about Bob Wenzel like that? ;D The man loves the Hoyas, and I swear he wants to have Jeff Green's baby.

Stig,
Teams are going to do that. Tonight, and the Villanova game are perfect examples of teams going into the game with the intention of taking Roy out and taking their chances with our shooting. The difference between now and other Hoya era's are the fact that our perimeter players are good enough to make teams pay for that.
So I don't see tonight and Saturday as bad things. If teams want to take Roy away from us, fine. We'll shoot your eyes out, Roy will rebound and block shots at the other end.
I worry more about stupid officials taking Roy out by calling him for fouls when 5-10 guards drive the lane and throw their bodies into him.

Some bad calls but Roy did not help with two really stupid fouls -- his second and third or third and fourth, depending on whether he wound up with 4 or 5 fouls (the ESPN announcers were verrry confused).

1. NOBODY complained when Jesse pulled that same move at the Garden earlier this year, and it worked. Watching both games, I think it was a great move then, and the appropriate move tonight since it seemed the defenders had taken away the passing lanes.
2. BIGGEST Play of the Game was when Cinn had just scored to get within single digits; ball gets stolen near half court; guy's going in for an "easy" layin; Then... Look! In the sky!! It's a bird; a plane... IT"S SUPER JEFF GREEN, coming in for the MONSTER BLOCK off the glass leading to two easy points for the Hoyas on the other end of the court!! HE IS POY BAR NONE!! It just seems that while teams can take Hibbert or someone else out of the game, JEFF can kill teams in so many ways, they are left to pray he just has a bad day or is his own worst enemy---and even THEN, the Hoyas made their biggest push to get back into the game while he sat on the bench for the last 6 minutes of the half (it seemed).
3. CONGRATS to the team---- REST UP and bring it ALL ON SATURDAY!!!!!! HOYA SAXA!!

We beat these guys all four halves despite great shooting, hard pressing and, today at least, throwing everyone in the world at Roy. This is what good teams do against bad teams. Even playing poorly, the Hoyas take their best shot and win by double digits.
Oh and once again, Vegas is dead on.

Haha, someone at espn didn't get the memo: sports.espn.go.com/ncb/photos?gameId=270522132"Cincinnati's Marvin Gentry (1) and Georgetown's Josh Thornton (23) go after a loose ball during the first half of a basketball game in Cincinnati, Wednesday, Feb, 21, 2007. (AP Photo/Tony Tribble)" I'm happy we got out of this one intact. I'm not going to look too much at our shortcomings in this game given the disparity of emotional energy between the two teams. I'm sure we'll have plenty of emotion saturday though.

It was a bad play -- 3 on 1 and you don't score? Should have passed the ball. I think it was Jeff as the trailer as well. I think DaJuan was the trailer, and I agree it was the wrong play. He also had Jon on the wing. But, overall, Jesse had an outstanding game and Jeff played like an All-American in about five different ways. Jon played great in the first half. Everyone contributed one way or another. I'm definitely not complaining. But the ridiculous hyperbole about this being "our best offensive team ever" needs to pause while folks watch a re-run of a ton of offensive boards surrendered and turnovers, including a 10-second violation and at least one 5-second violation (maybe two?) failing to inbound the ball. I'll grant that our shooting percentage is excellent, and thank goodness for that.

Or ridiculous overreaction to certain aspects of our 19th double-digit win of the season and tenth conference win in a row. Read that last sentence again and then tell me how ridiculous it is to praise this offense. Not the best effort tonight and maybe not the greatest offense ever but it's in the discussion. I bet I could find a few 10-second violations in 1984 or 1985 game tape as well.

FWIW, Cincinnati starts the game 5-5 from three, then goes 3-18 the rest of the game. I bet I could find a few 10-second violations in 1984 or 1985 game tape as well. I don't know about that--teams didn't press very often on Georgetown because Brown, Smith, and Jackson were expert ball handlers and they could not risk flooding the backcourt with Ewing up front.

OK, a win that felt ugly at times and looked spectacular at others. I have a few observations to take home from this one: 1. Does it seem to anyone else that Georgetown has two "modes" of defense? One mode seems too relaxed and always leaves a guy open for a 3 on the weak side. This mode, which we witnessed the 1st half of the St. John's game, phased in and out this game, and we could have gotten stung with it a bit more in the second half if the law of averages wasn't so busy catching up on Cinci. The second mode of defense is flat-out awesome. We just shut teams down, suffocating the three, switching well, and closing down the lane. This is what we saw against Marquette and for the decisive periods of tonight's game and the 'Nova game. We force TOs, force shot clock violations, and get forced shots. I feel the team turns on this second mode almost at will, and it triggers big runs. We've played whole games in this mode (WVU), and when the team feels like doing that, we are quite literally unbeatable. 2. I liked the experimentation against the press in the 2nd half tonight. Wallace, who had a great game shooting (and driving!), was getting pretty flustered in the back court, but boy oh boy was I impressed with Jeff Green's handling coming up the court. He can see above the little guys, and his dribbling has improved immensely through the season. I think we were most successful against the trap when the ball was in his hands. Rivers and Sapp also had success, with Sapp's confidence at speed a real advantage. The one problem is that when Sapp gets going he has trouble slowing down once we get onto the offensive end. This sometimes ends up in points (his successful drives were great), but other times it just ends up in a turnover or bad shot under the basket. I think when he brought it up and then passed to JW, we had great success. I'm not saying he should stop driving, because he gets success a lot, but maybe he should pick his spots a bit more. That said, Jessie is looking like the most improved player of the past few games. 3. I thought Roy did a great job tonight, considering that these guys were sticking to him like a beetle on dung. He had some great assists and did a good job grabbing rebounds, which is all that could really be expected of him. 4. Speaking of rebounds, they outhustled us a bunch. We can't let people outscrap us. We should have crushed them on the boards. 5. Jeremiah has got to be feeling great about those 3s. The Cinci guys basically hung back, and before each shot there was a weird lull in time where they were clearly challenging him to take the shot. Each time he did, and boy were they nice shots. After the first the announcer noted that JW was yelling at him not to hesitate, and I hope that these two beautiful shots will go a long way towards restoring his confidence. I was at the Fairfield game way back in the fall, and I know that this guy can contribute on the scoring end if he gets confidence in his shot/drive. 6. I really like the role the Georgetown team is assuming at this point in the year (haha, clearly, what with 10 games in a row). Tonight they were clearly getting the best shot of Cinci, but they handled it at every turn. It seemed like Georgetown was comfortable being the giant, swatting away the fly every time it got too annoying. I never felt overly nervous...which is a new feeling to any Hoyas fan in this millenium. 7. NICE JOB HOYAS!!! KEEP IT GOING, WIPE UP THE PITT-STAIN!!!!

I never was worried about this one either. Cincy wasn't going to shoot like that all game. we started out a little too lackadaisical - kinda NBA All-Starish type intensity. but I like that we were able to use that coolness to our advantage a little bit by hitting some smooth J's.
we need to work on our fast breaks. I know part of the problem is that we haven't had many at all this year...i think we even pulled it back to set up our halfcourt after we had a couple of 5 on fours. the only thing that does scare me for future games is that other teams' main focus will be to get Roy and JG in foul trouble...
saturday should be fun...
