You all forget that we're the biggest fans.
Most kids are passionate about G'town hoops, but without a football program, this is their version of <generic SEC school> saturday college football tailgating. This makes it harder for them to achieve said tailgating goal and therefore is a smidge infuriating to those who go for more than just to cheer Roy Hibbert.
Also, it's going to take more time, IS less convienent than what we had before and in at least my estimation, splitting a $15 cab ride among 3-4 people is now a way better idea. Heck, if someone has a car 4-5 or however many in one car becomes decent if you split the $20 to park. It's a hassle. I don't like hassles. I don't mind paying a few bucks to get me out of a hassle.
In any case, I guess we'll see how this all works out on Saturday. I hope Hoya Blue, AD and the administration are making the change VERY CLEAR and encouraging people to get there VERY EARLY.
How do we get these metro cards btw?
And is this costing the AD money?

For those who want door to door service, splitting a cab isn't a terrible option either.

maybe next year explore the idea of having a "premium" season ticket and a regular one. pay an extra $30 or so for a direct bus to/from the game. make them more convenient by making a few regular stops on the ride home (33rd and Prospect, 37th and Prospect, and finally the lot next to the tennis courts). there will be a certain demand for this.. maybe ~1500 which will be a lot easier to accommodate. give them a bus pass that they show to the bus driver when getting on/off the bus.
then for the rest, make metro cards or metrobus passes available. run more frequent GUTS buses to dupont and rosslyn during pre/post game hours. also promote the fact that henle and burleith residents can take the D6 from the hospital entrance to 4 blocks from Verizon (metro center). honestly i didnt know that was possible until a few weeks ago. i dont use DC buses very much but neither do most gtown kids. i bet less than 1/4 know they can do this to get to games for $1.25.
this should provide 3 easy ways to get to games and distribute the transportation of students to the games.

In the past, when we struggled to get 1000 kids to games, we maybe needed 20 school buses for any given game. Now, we're looking at needing 50+ school buses, and the implications of that are crazy for the short ride to the Verizon Center. How do you roll 50 buses through campus in any sort of efficient fashion? Not to mention where to park them in Chinatown at the end of the games.....wow....talk about a clusterf--k.
I think the net result of this is that students will have to plan a little better, leave earlier, stick around the neighborhood post-game to blow off some steam/allow the foot traffic to thin out a bit, and - all in all - it'll be fine. Frankly, in the time that it would take the last buses to get back to campus post-game, you can now go to Clyde's, grab a couple of beers, take the Metro to Foggy Bottom or Rosslyn and walk from there to campus. Seriously.

Just want to make this clear again . . . YOU DON'T NEED TO EVER SWITCH METRO LINES. METRO CENTER IS A 2 MINUTE WALK FROM THE ARENA.

Everyone who is complaining right now - I don't have a dog in the fight - just try it once and see if its a problem. If there are problems then I'm sure the athletic department will be flexible enough to change things - but we shouldn't blast them until we see whether it works or not - otherwise we look bad for criticizing the athletic department for not being flexible and then blasting them for being flexible.

Students are generally spoiled by the fact that everything they'll ever need in college is within a very small area, and thus they grossly exaggerate the effort needed to go anywhere outside that small area. This is how it was in my day, and it's probably how it always will be. It's why a student waits for SafeRides to go from Wisey's to Burleith while an alum sees it as a 10 minute walk tops.
That being said, I don't think the students posting in this thread complaining know how ridiculous they sound. This is a trip of maybe 4 metro stops taking at most 30 minutes (that's with horrible traffic). That's nothing!!!! This is how people get around urban areas without cars. If you want to go faster than that, take a cab. If you want to drive yourself, apply to VA Tech.
All the AD is asking is that you take a free bus that goes directly to the metro with no stops, then take a free metro ride 3 or 5 stops (depending on where you get on). Oh the horror! How could they ask you to undertake such an arduous trek? What they really should be investing in is teleporters so you go directly from your dorm room to your seat at Verizon without burning more that 25 calories.
And to continue this old codger rant, why the hell do you need to get drunk before a game? I can see a few drinks before, a few drinks during, and getting blitzed immediately afterward. Why the frak would you want to be inebriated for the game, though, in this year of all years?
You kids frustrate me to no end. Get off my lawn!!

i think yall are overestimating the amount of students that get drunk before or during games. in 4 years of gtown ive drank before or during games maybe 4 times... and maybe 1 of those times i was actually "drunk" and this is out of like 50 games. plus beers are like $8 at Verizon. i know a few people who drink but the vast majority do not. after the game its a different story.
i guess im saying that more drunk students on the metro before and after games is basically a non-issue.

Its not that as students we are spoiled, but just that its yet another hassle to go through in order to get into the game. Alumni (who have assigned seats) and Hoya Blue board members (who have staff passes, and thus get front row seats) don't have to worry about any of this because their seats are guaranteed. The rest of us though, have to figure out how to fight our way to good seats at the game. That involves having to get to Verizon very early, trying to pick out what is the best entrance to wait at, then trying to figure out what is the best ticket line to get in, then mad-rush to the seats, ect, ect. This new system of metro cards and buses to rossyln, just adds more things to worry about on gameday. By the time you finally get to your seats (which are gonna be overcrowded i imagine), you have already been through a long morning, not to mention pregaming ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I envision myself just taking cabs for most weekend games anyways, but try to realize that this isnt students being "spoiled".

Freshman year, my friends and I used to crash at our friends' place in Maryland the night before just so we could use their car to get early to the Cap Center. We didn't bitch. It is you being spoiled.
That said, it is a real concern for attendance. I hope HB is doing their best to tell people it really isn't that bad.
One thing HB could do is organize a time to meet so a large group could walk to Rosslyn together. Take the planning out of it for people.

Take the planning out of it for people. This is kinda important. Obviously the diehards in Hoya Blue are going to make do, and everyone here realizes that this is not a tremendous hardship, but the key is promoting that idea to a group of people who might not be so inclined to take 30 extra minutes (gasp!) out of their day to go see a basketball game. The leadership needs to get behind this whether they love it or not, and make sure everyone is well aware of the wonderful new policy and the added flexibility that comes with not having to worry about buses after the game. But stay out of Clyde's- that place is already too crowded without you meddling teenagers in there also.

Want me to help you out? Red Line (6 car) train into gallery place - best exit - last door of the first car Best exit from Gallery Place (7th and F) Best ticket line - usually on the left because that's where the head ticket taker is at.

For me i have no problems with the system, I metroed or cabbed most games. I plan on metroing cabbing, or taking a metro bus to all the games this year. I take public transporation all the time and it's not that big of a deal. I can however see how others would find it inconvenient. I do think we're spoiled about not having to go far for anything, but pointing this out isn't going to fix the problem. The students are spoiled and will see it as inconvenience which may discourage some people from attending the cupcake games. The thing that i'm most concerned about is the crowding at various stages in this trip. It will take longer than the busses did but it's painfully obvious that that system was flawed and would not have worked this year.

Contrary to the story on GUHoyas.com, there is no information about the transportation in the student season ticket packages distributed today (or my package does not have any). I trust 007 when he says Thursday and Friday. I'll ask tomorrow just for the heck of it when I pick up the tickets they didn't put in the packages (Towson, Navy, and Notre Dame). Are we thinking they'll hand out 1 card for the season or 1 card per semester or like 15 different cards? Just curious.
