I've read that Mulready has been leading the 2nd team very effectively.
I've also read the Caleb continues to make the little plays correctly pretty consistently....which has been his reputation.

Watched the game and it will just raise my expectations for what the Hoyas need to do tomorrow. Lehigh was a very poor shooting team particularly from deep. Northwestern dominated the boards and was missing a key player from what the broadcasters said. First half was a blowout but Lehigh played much better in the second half after Northwestern had taken its foot off the gas. If the Hoyas are as talented as advertised then this game should not be close particularly given the results of the scrimmages. I know teams improve--sometimes dramatically-- from Game 1 to Game 2 but if the Hoyas play this game close it will be a major disappointment. I am looking for a fairly big win, but shooting is pretty erratic for every team and I imagine especially so early season. They shot 12% from 3; they aren't likely to repeat that. They weren't a good three point shooting team last year, but they did shoot around 33%. That said, Northwestern dominated the boards -- Lehigh doesn't play a lot of its taller players much -- and pretty much had their way near the rim. We should be able to replicate that, and it should play well into our lack of outside shooting. Put Peavy on their best offensive player regardless of size. No player should play more than 30 mins/use bench. Practice inside-out. Outrebound them by double digits. Take pride on defense for 40 minutes. Practice using tall zone. Might be a great disruption.

Here's what I am looking for: - The most important things aren't going to be results because of the competition (provided that we play well); they are going to be choices made.
- Intensity on defense. We didn't really see it last year. I want us to be tough, swarming, angry. We need to bring it consistently, and it's a good sign if we can bring it against Lehigh.
- Defensive rotations. I just want to see a team that knows where to go a reasonable % of the time. Don't give up a bunch of corner threes -- the Ewing special. Don't overcommit on drives. We have freshmen, so I am not expecting perfection here. Just signs that this team is learning better than last year's lethargic bunch. Of particular note is if we can limit their 3 point attempts / how well we contest. They shot 2-17 against NWU and we should not expect that, but if we can keep their attempts near there I will be happy.
- Run the offense. Last year, I thought our offensive sets were actually pretty good, but we ran them about 50% of the time. This year, aside from late-shot clock situations and complete defensive breakdowns, I want to see us run an offense nearly all of the time. No lazy shots because you are tired. If you are tired, pass the ball, get off the court. If you have an ok shot, try to get a better one. Limit heat checks -- we don't need someone to get hot to score.
- What is the offense? This is more curiosity driven, but how much motion? How much pick and roll? Will we have any post game?
- The other things I am looking for are more results-oriented, which means that they can either be really bad signs, or possibly good signs, but the level of competition keeps it really from meaning much.
- Do we have rim protection? Lehigh doesn't play a lot of their bigger guys, but we couldn't defend the rim from anyone last year. Sorber, Fielder, Burks, and Julius ... can they contest shots without fouling? Again, doing so isn't a great sign, but not being able to do so is a bad one.
- Likewise, can we contest shots AND defensive rebound? Last year, we got blitzed on the boards by Holy Cross. Whether it's Burks, Fielder, Sorber or just a team effort, can we at least keep a mid major from getting a ton of O boards if our center is contesting shots at the rim?
- How many guys does Cooley trust? Every year we have dreams of a deep team, but most years, even against weaker teams, we see a much smaller rotation. With so many new players, this is hardly definitive as players improve, but I think it will be a good gauge of his trust level regardless of score.
- How's the fast break on both ends? We had a terrible fast break offense last year and the worst transition D I have ever seen. Are those improved drastically given the competition? We will need easy buckets this year and cannot give them up. I've been a general defender of Epps' relative defense, but the transition D was often his fault -- can we fix that?
- I don't think we can really tell much about our other big issue: shooting. It's too small a sample, period.

Lehigh is awful and we should feast on them. The things that will likely hurt us this year they can't exploit. This should be a very easy win whatever you consider that. I would think it should look like le Moyne last year though. I don't think we will learn much outside of rotations and maybe one or two of the bench players flashes and gives us something to be happy about. Only thing I will be looking at is if the guards get beat off the dribble and if so are we are giving up wide open 3s. Lehigh won't make them but it will be a warning sign like it has been the past few years.

Kudos to whomever is doing the sport marketing to get a sell-out for this game. I am very worried overall about attendance this season.

Lots of things to look for game 1. Sorber hype. Mack Epps backcourt. Defensive improvement.
But 4 things I'll be curious to watch:
Who gets the start tomorrow at the 4 - Fielder or Burks? In Cooleys media avail today he mentioned Burks' rebounding in the scrimmages but Fielder feels like more of a security blanket for Game 1 at least to start.
Does Julius play much? It was pretty clear from the media avail as well that Julius is going to be a big factor this season - but that he's only been practicing a couple weeks while the other guys have been around since late May. Not to mention Sorber talked about his biggest difference from HS thus far is learning to play some 4 position. Eventually I'd expect Julius and Sorber to be the starting frontcourt but that feels weeks away.
Who gets the backup guard minutes? Mulready has had the buzz but he's been banged up last couple weeks. What's the other options? Curtis W? Peavy slides to a guard spot?
There's been a lot of talk about "playing fast". Cooley also mentioned that in the scrimmages some of their bigger struggles were transition offense and shooting. That's a bad combo for a team that wants to play fast. Will be curious if we can play fast against an inferior opponent with success or if Ed will default to half court grind it out until he has a better handle on what he's got with this team.
Looking forward to tomorrow.

Trying to get shots up within 15 or 20 seconds of a possession?

The context I've seen it in is more getting easy baskets, presumably in transition, though I can't remember if that is explicit or implicit. I don't think we're running a seven seconds or less type thing but rather pushing transition buckets because, I suspect, we're concerned about getting good shots against set defenses that might not have to extend out to shooters.

Either way I thought someone said it in an interview. Maybe someone else can remember.

Transition play has never been a plus for his squads, this will be interesting to watch

But there have been clear references to really push for easy buckets, and I think that is what is being referenced here. I'm extrapolating a bit to transition, I think. It's not a great sign. I mean, getting easy buckets is smart, but if you are pushing really heavily for them it generally means you aren't getting them in the half court. I'm more worried about transition D, frankly. Ours was so bad last year.

GAMEDAY!!!!
Lets Go Hoyas. It's going to feel good to don the Blue and Gray. Share the ball, pass with conviction, and open up shots for your teammates. The best shot is when you're open and you get open by doing work to get your teammates open and making the defense rotate. I'm excited for some depth in the front court, contest every basket! Time to fly around on defense, communicate, and suffocate their ball handlers and shooters.
GO HOYAS!!!!!

According to Ron, the coaches definitely think they need to get as many easy baskets as possible to take the pressure off of the half-court offense. Pushing the pace in transition has been a theme in practice this fall.

I need a win in the worst kind of way (as I am sure at least 49% of Hoya fans at least are in a similar mindset). Let's go Hoyas! Start the season in style and let's be 2-0 heading into the ND game.

EtomicB theres been a few clips of Cooley using those exact words "we want to play fast". Ron posted the media avail from Monday and Cooley brought it up specifically.
