What I’m most curious about is if they fire Neptune, who do they target? They’re obviously still a cut above most of the BE in terms of who they can attract and steal. I wonder if it’ll be an angle of taking a coach from a football centric school.

I wonder if it’ll be an angle of taking a coach from a football centric school. Nothing happens right now because, unlike GU, basketball coaches are hired at the athletic director level and Villanova doesn't have one right now (Mark Jackson quit in September to take the Northwestern job). A lot of AD candidates wouldn't appreciate a school hiring a new coach before they arrived. The inconvenient truth is that Villanova is a lot closer to Georgetown than UConn in terms of attracting major candidates. Its last five coaches are alumni of the following schools: Jack Kraft: St. Joseph's grad, came to Villanova as head coach at Malvern Prep Rollie Massimino: Vermont grad, came to Villanova as a Penn assistant Steve Lappas: CCNY grad, came to Villanova as a former Massimino assistant and head coach at Manhattan Jay Wright: Bucknell grad, came to Villanova as a former Massimino assistant and head coach at Hofstra Kyle Neptune: Lehigh grad, came to Villanova as a former Wright assistant and head coach at Fordham While it's not exactly la famiglia, every head coach in school history has either player or coached in Philadelphia before taking the job. The fan base is slightly larger and the donor base more supportive, sure, but they don't "own" Philadelphia in the same way Georgetown doesn't "own" Washington, for NIL purposes. Not having FBS football money also limits their reach to P4 coaches who are not coming to the Big East over resources. Indirectly, this issue may be a factor if Villanova decides to transfer some of its football budget to basketball and move to the PL from the CAA, which Richmond is doing. Neptune's problem is not coaching, it's that the last of the Jay Wright recruits (many of whom were a heist from JT III and Ewing) are no more and the recruiting hasn't been as strong since.

I predicted Butler being ass. Their backcourt is awful in King and Bizjack.

Rough first week for the BE thus far. Even the wins have been less than impressive.

It’s fun to dream about getting more Big East wins this year but this isn’t a good way for it to happen. In the quickly ever changing landscape of college sports the Big East has to maintain basketball relevance especially after the disrespect by the committee last year. Losing to low majors will not help that.

Our metrics might take a hit if teams like Butler and Villanova step backward but the conference will stay respectable.

That was in a very deep conference where only 2 teams dragged the conference down. The Big East teams already have as many terrible performances as a conference than they did all of last year and it's only game 2. These games kill resumes and metrics. I'd rather be the 7th best team in a conference that has 6 teams make the conference than the 7th best in a conference where only 3 make it. Without UConn the Big East would be in a very vulnerable spot right now when it comes to perception.

I watched some of the Providence 1st half. It looks like they have 3 big centers with different attributes. It will be interesting to see how we match up against them with our centers.

I think that St. John’s this year as potentially the fourth best team will be much better than last years 4th and 5th best teams (Seton Hall and St. John’s). We will have to see but I think even with parts of the conference struggling, I’m confident we get more teams than last year.

Shaheen is in a tough spot. They are basically a minor league team that has their best players that they have taken time to develop (Khadary Richmond) poached by the big boys. It’s a shame

It’s a shame Only reason Willard got Richmond is because he leveled down after a meh season Syracuse. Now at 23 y/o he's just using his bonus year to shoot for the stars.

It’s a shame My fever dream scenario is: 1. Kim English flames out at Provy because (shhh….) he’s never actually coached a team to outproduce its talent level 2. Holloway gets frustrated trying to coach at a school that doesn’t have the NIL to compete, even if it’s his alma mater 3. Providence hires Holloway and the Providence fanbase has to put themselves in a pretzel to rationalize how it’s different than Cooley going to Gtown One can only hope

They will rename the Dunk to the Aunt. Aunt Annie Center

It’s a shame St. John’s is not one of the “big boys “. Neither is Ole Miss. Seton Hall lacks NIL but Holloway constantly complaining about players wanting it doesn’t help himself or the program.

It’s a shame Word is Khadary wasnt the best teammate in his time there. But yes Seton Hall has no NIL so they have no shot unless some rich alum comes thru big for them. Also very happy Garwey Dual didn't follow Cooley. Man he is limited. Can not shoot at all.
