From the post game press conference:
Reporter: "With so many new pieces, was it surprising to see the team move the ball and share the ball so well?"
Cooley: "Nah ... I mean ... (shaking head) ... Hell no. You're supposed to. It's team basketball. The ball should move, bodies should move. You talk about being an undisciplined, unselfish group. That's what you do. If the ball's sticking, great defensive teams are going to load up. I wanna come back to this: we play in the Big East. You're not going to have many games like this. The Big East is a monster. It is a juggernaut. It is the best conference top to bottom in America. If you don't move the ball and [be] unselfish, it's gonna be long nights, so you better learn to move the ball, share, and play with a sense of urgency on every possession. Our teams will always be unselfish, our teams will always be physical, and our teams will always do our best to defend. We may not win every night, but you are going to get a hard effort every night on the defensive end. If not, there will be a buzzer that says [hits table with his finger] 'sit your ass down.' Understand that?"

Clear expectations, encouraging, calm and direct...what a friggin unbelievable difference... A good coach is both steeped in basketball knowledge and a great leader, capable of communicating clearly and motivating the players. Cooley has both. When he was hired I expected that Ewing would have the first—and was surprised that he didn’t—but he clearly did not have the second.

Look, the competition obviously was as weak as it gets. But the ball was moving, guys were getting on the floor for loose balls, they were communicating defensively, and they seemed to be having fun. They blew out a team they're supposed to beat. They looked like a real basketball team. The lower bowl was mostly full and having a good time.
For a first game, couldn't ask for more than that.

There appeared to be strategy and planning. What a difference.

I like the emotion and intensity, and if I'm Cooley, I don't want my players to pull back on that. So my main point to Epps would be "you let him get you off your game, and you can't let him do that. He got in your head and it cost you a T, but even more, he threw you off doing what you do best and what helps this team the most. Work on that 'cause we need you in there and with your head in the game." Therefore, it doesn't matter if it's LeMoyne or Duke. If we are going to be successful as a team, we have to practice and do what we do best as a team together whether it's a weak OOC team or the BE championship team. So we get real clear about the things that help us do our best and the things that pull us away from excelling on the court. Keep the intensity, keep the edge, but don't let it detract from our ability to do what we are working together to accomplish. It was the first game of the season and we won by 37. Cooley sat Epps down shortly thereafter. Epps had 11 assists and played within himself and the game flow. He’ll be fine. Yeah, I would go further and say I liked Epps getting it on w Depersia. First of all, the Lemoyne kid is a punk a$$ flopper and needs to know that’s not how the game is played at this level. What Epps did barely amounted to actionable and both lame announcers agreed - they were shocked to see it come out as a tech. Then to hit him with another offensive moments later where he didn’t extend his arm at all? Nope all over that. Send word out that you will get punched in the face by these new look Hoyas if you come into our house with that weak bag of tricks. Do it to Depersia so you don’t have to do it to Kolek and Posh. Let the world see now. Most of what else I caught late any night watching the game after being stuck out at a Bib Dylan concert at game time has been observed by others, so I will say only two other things before a reawatch - Brumbaugh can rebound. The “walkons” will provide some quality minutes.

A couple of things I loved about the game: Drew Fielder making a statement with the first shot of his career. He is going to be a good one. Bristol hustling his ass off on multiple plays Multiple primary ball handlers Epps having 11 assists and knowing exactly how to get others involved while also being a scoring threat Cook overcoming a rough first half. That I only saw that God damn 'horns' set once. I noticed 0 highly ineffective screen attempts Wide open 3s were far, far fewer than in the past. The ball moved. That we never let a weaker team think they could play with us on the scoreboard. Another comment - I thought Stylez played with a lot of energy and initiative. There was leadership beyond what I was expecting.

Agree with almost all of the Epps paragraph, but the offensive foul you’re disputing was right in front of us and Epps led with an off elbow into the gut. Clear foul, especially after the prior stuff. Not a dirty play at all, just an offensive foul and an obvious call for the ref.

Two concerns about the Cap One facility last night. 1. The scoreboard had major issues. The game score and the clock were Ok but the scoreboard never showed the shot clock. The screens showing who was on the floor with their points scored and PF had the wrong people for large segments in time and no update on points scored for the people who were on the floor. And the small screen with the team statistics was a joke. If you took the number of 2 pt baskets made times 2 and added the number of 3 pt baskets made times 3 the total was well over the team score and free throws made added to that. 2. On the 100 level there was no draft beer, only cans. And every can was an Anheuser Busch product. Will nothing of these be the case all season? We have some great local breweries that should be available and draft beer tastes much better than cans of beer, and it is much more profitable for the reseller. Uncle Ted tanking Cap One facility since he wants %600 m. from the city to renovate Cap One! Only half kidding!😃 Is Ted getting a piece of the 13 bucks (!) being charged for an outside “locker” in the event one’s not-very- large handbag is deemed too big to be screened and allowed inside?

I watched on my cell late at night so defer to your perspective - maybe the shoulder or elbow, but not into a set defender and no arm extension. Weak sauce. It got called because of the prior stuff but I still like the messaging, attitude and effort.

I rarely get such a clear view of a play that I agree with the call, but couldn’t argue this one and didn’t look like Epps argued it either.
I will say that 3 earned some extra “attention” whenever he drove after that.

His physical presence and effort on the glass are going to be really important, and it is a great added bonus that the guy can knock down 3's. The way the ball moved last night I would imagine the Hoyas are going to get some open threes this year and having another guy who can knock them down is going to be a huge help

Sorry but that isn't reality in today's college basketball. Sadly, every team should expect a couple of transfers every year. Was at the game last night and it was nice to leave the arena with a happy heart. I like the team's direction and some of the players look like they will be important parts of our return to high level competition. The future looks bright. The only players eligible to play right away next season if they transfer are Ryan, Drew & Wayne. Both Drew & Wayne will see a lot of PT this and next year so I doubt very much they transfer. Your point is correct for CBB overall but for Gtown the roster makeup is very solid for next season as it stands right now. Wayne transferred from Howard so I believe that disqualifies him. But Supreme may be able to make that move. Regardless all those guys, with the possible exception of Ryan, should be satisfied with the minutes they get this season.

Bristol will have graduated and able to use a free transfer by next offseason. Not sure why he'd go somewhere else, just saying he'll be eligible to do so based on the current rules.

Graduates can transfer during the portal window. Supreme would need to graduate though, and I thought the Georgetown rule was you need two years in residence to get a degree, and Akok Akok sidestepped that possibly by transferring credits back into UCONN. www.ncaa.org/news/2023/10/4/media-center-di-council-approves-changes-to-notification-of-transfer-windows.aspx
