I think Epps and Rowan will be a very good duo for years to come. Agreed, I liked what I saw from both of them. Right now, Brumbaugh is probably limited on offense a bit more than Epps, as I think he'll have a harder time creating his own shots, but he is a great ball handler. And Epps showed that even when he wasn't getting shots that he could pass, too. I know some people were concerned about Epps and hero ball, but I didn't see it last night.

Great to see improved passing and defensive effort. It was night and day. There are going to be a lot of minutes for young guys that will set us up well for next year and years following. Everyone except health and massoud should be back next year. We have a strong recruiting class coming in. We have a few extra slots that we can aim high for transfers. I think Epps and Rowan will be a very good duo for years to come. Very exciting game and it was nice not to be heated all game against an inferior opponent. I believe that Cook is also a senior who will not be back next year.

I think it’ll open up the offense especially in years to come to have 2 guys that can pass at a high level and move the ball. Especially as we continue to add shooters to this team. Epps seems more ready at the moment but Rowan is ahead of where I expected him to be when he committed

Cooley's post-conference presser on defensive effort:
"Our teams will always be physical and we're always going to do our best to defend. We may not win every night but you're going to get a hard effort every night on the defensive end if not there'll be a buzzer that says sit your a-- down you, understand that?"
On Supreme Cook, he started in 2020-2021, that's the year where all players got another year of eligibility, right? If so, he should have another year.

I appreciate this is a laughably low bar, but looking for two things tonight: 1. A team that plays hard and hustles 2. A team that enjoys playing basketball with each other and shares the ball It was evident from opening night last year that these two things were not present. Hopefully we never see that type of basketball again. Hoya Saxa Check and check. A few other comments: - Refreshing to see both player and ball movement on the offensive end. Those who have watched Providence the last few years knew this, but it was helpful that we didn't see the flex as the base offense last night. Of all the offseason tropes, that was certainly the most confusing one I kept reading.
- Defensively, its clear Cooley wants to switch every screen as his base defense for this team, which I think makes a ton of sense if you're undersized. Cook looked credible on the perimeter. Fielder definitely has some work to do. Which brings us to Mutombo, and probably why he didnt play a ton until garbage time last night. He just doesnt fit that system, and you have to do something completely different to hide his foot speed. He's going to play, they'll work through it, but it might be less minutes than people want or expect for this reason
- In this switching defense, the guards are going to have to front the post or make those entry passes more difficult. Didn't matter yesterday but will in future. Ironically, one of the best front jobs by a guard then resulted in the open corner 3 on a swing pass (I think Heath fell asleep or was confused on who to close out on) and Cooley immediately called a timeout up 30. There are always coaching points even in blowouts
- I'm actually looking forward to the coaching in huddle segments now. That's fun. In the one for the second half, Cooley made the point of switching out and up, which was cool. It's not just a flat hand off of responsibilities, switch and be aggressive and force the ball handler to retreat
I think the expectations for the season still probably need to stay in check, there's clearly going to be nights where the talent and size differential are going to be too much to overcome. But if they continue to play hard, share the ball, and hustle, they'll surprise some people. No longer can you take an off night and bring your C game to win against Gtown, and that's a perfectly acceptable step 1 in the rebuild

I think the Hoyas will run a little bit of the flex offense this season, Cooley has used that for years, but I don't see it being used too often. It is a good change of pace set and usually results in a good shot, or gets you a few free throws, if it is run correctly. The issue with the Flex, is that is slows the game down. The advantage is that it can physically punish the defensive team for a possession or two

I also didn't see a lot of long 2's last year. That is definitely coaching. Brumbaugh had one where the guy bit on a fake and he calmly took a dribble to get to about 18 feet and shot. Nothing but net. Little things like this, the D hustle, proper D rotations are all going to add up to wins. We definitely don't have the bodies up front. What we did to Le Moyne on the boards won't happen in BE play against the top half of the conference but Fielder will figure it out a bit. I hope Massoud can get back soon and get some boards. Guys like Bristol & Styles coming back to rebound as a team will be key. Massoud isn't a big rebounder - I think we probably need to wait till next year for the real help inside. The bright side is that this team is scrappy and is capable of shooting from the perimeter and hopefully can stay in games by leveraging the three. The 27 attempts from three they took last night is way over the historical average of the teams that Cooley has coached. Massoud will really help there with the shooting and providing more options and bringing bigs out onto the perimeter to clear space in the middle and the mid-range. We are going to shoot sooooo many threes this year, and they won't all be as good as we had against LeMoyne. But it will probably get us a few upsets. The key will be not to fall in love with it against teams we don't have to do so against. Win the the ones you can with solid play, and then take your shot against clearly better teams.

The defense was not great all night, but it was consistently good for the game. They got beat on a few plays (Drew struggled guarding players on the perimeter) but overall they competed hard and did not allow very many easy, open shots. I think the defense will only improve as the year goes on and this staff continues to work with the team and individual players. I think against decent teams we will play similarly -- denying the three but giving up quite a bit inside and taking our chances. Will we be able to rebound will be a big question as the number of offensive boards we give up will probably be a break point between acceptable and not. I'm just glad we understand that we should defend the three and we have a plan.

Agree with all of the above. The difference between last year and this year is that there will be nights in January or February where we can win games against superior opponents with hustle, good execution, and a few lucky breaks. Last year the margin for error was incredibly thin because of the way we shot the 3 and defended the 3. Even when we played well, it never felt like it was sustainable for more than 10-12 mins at a time. As someone who was optimistic that Mutumbo was going to take a leap this year and fill a void in the frontcourt, it was quite clear defensively he'd be a liability playing this way. Not sure how much his foot speed can improve, but against teams who can space the floor with their bigs, he's probably not playable. Against bigger bodies in the paint he might be good for a couple of fouls and/or needed when Cook inevitably gets into foul trouble himself. I don't think Fielder is ready to defend at this level yet either, though he provides a lot more offensively, and thus needs to be on the court. Not looking forward to the matchups against Clingan, Soriano, Kalkbrenner, or Dixon, but maybe those are games where we hope to go small and trade 3's for 2's (the opposite of our style in recent years). The good thing is Sorber looks to be a stud, and basically this entire team should be in tact to have him plug in at this area of need, on top of whatever ever transfers Cooley can reel in. A lot can happen from now to then, but I think this team will be quite dangerous at this time next year.

This is bush league. He got stripped then did the stupidity to get the tech and kept going with this. This isn't a chip on the shoulder. This is immaturity. He's playing Le Moyne for petes sake. Oh come on, you have no idea what Depersia was saying to him to elicit that kind of reaction. Sure, he needs to keep better composure, but the Tech was most definitely the second guy getting flagging after the first guy started it. I like the emotion and intensity, and if I'm Cooley, I don't want my players to pull back on that. So my main point to Epps would be "you let him get you off your game, and you can't let him do that. He got in your head and it cost you a T, but even more, he threw you off doing what you do best and what helps this team the most. Work on that 'cause we need you in there and with your head in the game." Therefore, it doesn't matter if it's LeMoyne or Duke. If we are going to be successful as a team, we have to practice and do what we do best as a team together whether it's a weak OOC team or the BE championship team. So we get real clear about the things that help us do our best and the things that pull us away from excelling on the court. Keep the intensity, keep the edge, but don't let it detract from our ability to do what we are working together to accomplish.

Everyone except health and massoud should be back next year. Sorry but that isn't reality in today's college basketball. Sadly, every team should expect a couple of transfers every year. Was at the game last night and it was nice to leave the arena with a happy heart. I like the team's direction and some of the players look like they will be important parts of our return to high level competition. The future looks bright.

Two concerns about the Cap One facility last night.
1. The scoreboard had major issues. The game score and the clock were Ok but the scoreboard never showed the shot clock. The screens showing who was on the floor with their points scored and PF had the wrong people for large segments in time and no update on points scored for the people who were on the floor. And the small screen with the team statistics was a joke. If you took the number of 2 pt baskets made times 2 and added the number of 3 pt baskets made times 3 the total was well over the team score and free throws made added to that.
2. On the 100 level there was no draft beer, only cans. And every can was an Anheuser Busch product. Will nothing of these be the case all season? We have some great local breweries that should be available and draft beer tastes much better than cans of beer, and it is much more profitable for the reseller.

The only players eligible to play right away next season if they transfer are Ryan, Drew & Wayne. Both Drew & Wayne will see a lot of PT this and next year so I doubt very much they transfer. Your point is correct for CBB overall but for Gtown the roster makeup is very solid for next season as it stands right now.

That's true but this year may be the exception to that rule given the size of the roster and number of scholarship players and the amount of playing time this year for everyone.

Cooley sat Epps down shortly thereafter. Epps had 11 assists and played within himself and the game flow. He’ll be fine.

I was privileged to sit with JohnnyJones last night and the communication on both ends of the floor was a striking and welcome change - lots of talking and virtually all switches and screens were called out. Defense still needs a little work especially on containing drives from the outside. Ed is serious on sitting after defensive lapses, it happened after almost all of them. Not a long time in most cases, but enough to say hello, don’t forget your role. The end of first half play he drew up on the fly was a thing of beauty not seen in these parts for years. Sure, the attendance may be a bit overstated but the students were present and into it and to have that happen on a Tuesday night with exams ongoing after the last few years was notable. I thought Heath had a sneaky good game and Stylez impressed as well. This team will compete, that is for sure.

Since I didn't see it mentioned by anyone else, I like what I saw from Cam Bacote. Probably never going to get heavy minutes unless there's a lot of foul trouble, but was a decently competent 3rd string PG to have on the roster.
Sidenote: Bacote is OLD. Dude was a freshman on the MDES team we played in Patrick's first season as coach. Hope he's able to get a graduate degree out of this.

The lack of draft beer might be a function of not being sure how many people were going to show up. I can't see Ted leaving money on the table so a few more concession stands might open up if we put bodies in seats. A number of OOC games the past two years could have been played in McDonough with plenty of room left over. I know people mentioned the student turnout, but I was pleasantly surprised at the non-student turnout, especially given what was in the seats five minutes before tip. I'm not sure why he isn't selling independent craft beers though--maybe he negotiated a bad contract with Anheuser Busch as to what they can sell--I'm being snarky. The scoreboard is another story. It has been freezing for several years with respect to the stats but never as bad as last night. They put the stats up at half-time on the video part of the board while still showing the frozen stats. It was a problem with the old board. They made a big deal about the new improved scoreboard when they unveiled it (last year?, the year before?) and it froze during the first game I was at. Does anyone here go to Wizards or Caps game and does it happen at those games? I'm surprised it hasn't been fixed by now.
