How good can this kid be? What’s his comp? NBA. No comp. Just Rowan.

Yeah but Bobby wasn't a shooter at all. It was a different game back then….but he could shoot. He shot 49% from the field one year and was a career 40% 3 point shooter. Was on 10 attempts in 3 years of having the 3pt shot. I wasn't saying Bobby couldn't play. I know the man well, his uncle I believe it was ran Kingman b&G club for a long time. Bobby would come by all the time when I was there. But most of his shots were lay-ups. He shot 56% from the FT line.

I think Kolek is a good comp. Brumbaugh is a real point guard who is always looking to keep the ball moving in productive ways. I can't recall any Hoya guard in my 45 years of following the team that has his type of passing vision. Maybe Kenny Brunner had some of this - but I don't remember his brief Hoya career in any real detail.
If Brumbaugh is anywhere near as good as he looked in Kenner in real games - then our offense is going to undergo a true 180 degree change. Last year was all iso and bad/tough mid range jumpers, mixed in with reckless drives into forced, difficult shots at the rim. With Brumbaugh running the show, the offense will be focused on ball movement in search of open 3s and good shots at the rim.
Kolek's progression last year completely changed Marquette's season. they were predicted to finish in the bottom third of the BE. they ended up winning the BE regular season and being an NCAA two seed, and this was due largely to Kolek's point guard play. It is very unlikely that we have the talent to do anything like that in the coming season. But a high level, pass first PG can have a massive impact on a team's offense. I know I am probably far too optimistic about what Brumbaugh can do for the team this season. But I also won't be surprised if we end up being a far more competitive team than expected this season if Brumbaugh's Kenner play is an accurate indication of how he can play in real BE games.

I love Kolek as a player but the transformation at Marquette had a lot to do with their change in offense from his 1st year lead by Justin Lewis. Style/system makes a big difference in performance. It'll be interesting to see if Cooley opens up the offense this season..

Sounds a little bit like our version of Kyle Anderson perhaps. It's a decent comp. Rowan is quite a bit smaller obviously. I'd probably go with a less athletic Michael Carter Williams. How about R Arcidiacono?

Let's slow down. Our usual selves of over reacting to Kenner. Rowan has yet to play a college game and we're comparing him to some of the better ones. I was impressed with what I saw in the Kenner finals but it's still Kenner.

So to temper expectations, should we should start with “a taller Brendan Gaughan” ?

Brumbaugh, and all of our guys, seem like good kids. I have a feeling that we are going to like this group a lot, even if the on-court success is not yet where we want it to be.

Thanks, boya. I hadn’t seen that post. Rowan is going to be a Hoya All-Timer. Any articles posted by HoyaTalk’s Whine&Cheese Club?

I like Brumbaugh. He's still learning on the court. And that's fine as he's basically a freshman having redshirted last year at Texas. Brumbaugh really needs to cut down the turnovers. That's the single biggest thing he can do to make himself a more valuable player at this point.

I think Brumbaugh has the skill set and basketball IQ to make the adjustments to this level and improve on things he has struggled with in some games this year. He seems to be a hard worker and wants to be a "pass first" PG, so he knows he needs to eliminate the turnovers. While he doesn't look very fast/quick some times now, I think that is just him still being a little unsure. As he gets more experience and more comfortable I think his decision making will improve and he is more than a good enough athlete to be a starting PG in the Big East.

If you consider that Rowan has a total of 5 games of college basketball experience and is starting for a major conference team, he gets a A+. He will be fine.

What an enjoyable interview that was. It makes me think that if podcasts existed during the JT era, not only would Rowan not be able to have such a sitdown discussion with any form of the media BEFORE the second semester, he would have to have had an adult representative of the team nearby just for such a chat to be agreed to. I am 100% certain no such representative was hovering nearby for this. Rowan is such a good kid and is so self-deprecating. You can't help but love the guy. He is already smart enough not to push the panic button (this conversation happened after the Rutgers game) and instead asks for patience and offers assurances that a turnaround for the better was in the foreseeable future. And props to the duo who conducted the interview. Of all the podcasts and/or YouTube shows dedicated to covering the Hoyas, these guys are EASILY the best in asking consistently engaging questions. I just listed to their interview with Ish and felt that was a blast too. I decided to follow them and check out some of their even older stuff.

So many try to compare him to guards with four years experience. He is adjusting to the big step up in the speed of the game from Kenner rat ball to regular FBS play. He is making mistakes. But to give up on him based on the mistakes at this time is very short sighted. He is a diamond in the rough, but still in the rough. He will be better than fine for us.

Don't forget his free throw shooting. At the end of games (or in overtime) he's the one guy on this team I want on the foul line.
