I think all we Hoya fans have to acknowledge that RIGHT NOW we don't need a head coach who will get us to the final four. Rather we need a head coach who can get this program back to "normalcy" and by that I mean 10+ BE wins a year, occasional win over top 10 teams, meaningful games in February, and maybe an NCAA bid in the next 3-4 years. Also restore some of the "glow" associated with Hoya basketball and definitely get the student body and alumni excited again about the program. I think Cooley can do that and maybe position his successor the get us back to the mountaintop. To use a lame analogy, right now we don't need someone who can get this train to NCAA glory, we just need someone who can get it back on the tracks. I can agree with this if the Salary is under $6 million a year. Cause you don't give that type of money for a Sweet 16 every 12 years and maybe an NCAA bid in the next 3 to 4 years. For $6 million a year, got to see some Final 4's and a Championship banner. Not just being happy to get to the tournament cause as a coach that's your job to at least get to the tournament Example is Purdue's Matt Painter $3.58 million/year Will Purdue Fire Coach Matt Painter With $16M Contract
We have all seen Purdue and Matt Painter for 3 straight years with #3, #2,, #1, Seeds and underwhelm in the NCAA Tournament. Granted if Matt Painer is at Georgetown he can stay forever as long has gets to the tournament but he is not getting $6 million per year either. The more you get paid the higher should be the expectation of results, I think that's a fair assessment. So you agree if its $5.75mm per year? How much of this is coming out of your pocket? Its time to let the salary thing go. It is market value until soon enough when it will be under market value. We HAD to move. This was a necessary move for the university. Just imagine if we failed to move for a few hundred grand of someonme else's money and we were scrambling today for a lesser proven entity....

I am cautiously optimistic here. It would be nice to pencil in the Hoyas in your NCAA brackets again. I’m too old for another mediocre regime. I plan to catch some games next season. ✌🏼

The Administration has not always made moves in the best interest of the program. You seem fine with whatever Ed Cooley gets. Do you have any expectations?

I wonder if Val Ackerman will attend like she did at Rick Pitino's press conference.

I have responded to this same point a bunch of times over the years, it just is not accurate. Even though JT3 had to re-recruit Green, I'll give that to Esherick, sure. But Roy Hibbert was NOT super sought after nor was he a high-level recruit. It's not like Esherick bringing him in was some big recruiting coup (and by some tellings, Hibbert was basically a lock to go to Georgetown regardless). And Hibbert was horrible as a freshman and did not improve until he developed under JT3 between freshman and sophomore years. He didn't develop because of Esherick. Other points: Bowman, Cook, and Owens all significantly improved from Esherick to JT3. As did Green and Hibbert, as noted above. The Final Four team also relied a lot on players that Esherick had nothing to do with, especially Wallace, but also Summers, Sapp, Ewing Jr., Rivers, and Macklin. Are we winning a Final Four without them? Unlikely. To me, the only point of "X coach only won with [previous coach's] recruits" is to say that a coach cannot recruit. In other words, with better talent from a previous coach, here was success, but the next coach didn't. The fact is, because of the Final Four, JT3's teams were stacked with talent in 2008, 2009, and 2010, and some of the teams following were really excellent too. Now, they didn't have post-season success (even if they had regular season success), but it's not like in that era JT3 had trouble recruiting. I just think generally this is a bad point to raise for any coach unless that coach has problems recruiting, which wasn't the case with JT3. I do wonder how the JT3 era goes under today's rules. You have to wonder how many of the current players may have looked at transferring rather than stay and learn the Princeton offense. That alone makes it very difficult to compare his first few years to coaches in today's era. Keeping that roster intact, as well as the recruiting class, was huge for the program and JT3. This is a problem for all the system coaches: Boeheim 2-3 Princeton Bennet Pack Line Jay Wright 4 out dribble drive It’s a marvel to watch these teams when they have 3-4 year system players who know how to run them like a finely oiled machine. That’s what makes college basketball special. The more it starts to resemble the NBA, it just becomes a lower level NBA. I hope NCAA is smart enough to go to 3-4 year contacts (where you can’t transfer easily) or they are going to ruin the game.

Welcome aboard coach Cooley. You didn’t make my top 3 candidate list or dark horse. But I rather have you as the Men’s Basketball Head Coach at Georgetown than Rick Pitino. You got my full support coach. Let’s go Hoyas!

I didn't get to listen to much of it because of work, but on his Dawg Talk Instagram page this morning, Chris Wright seemed happy with Cooley, noted that Pitino at St. John's was good for the Big East (though he said Pitino "fit" their better than at Georgetown), and said that he has no inside information but hopes that Ronny is gone.

While it would be fun to watch, I'm not sure why Maryland would do that unless it's scheduled as a home-and-home, in which case Maryland would basically get 2 home games out of the deal. Also, Cooley always schedules weak non-conference opponents, so I'd expect he'd avoid Maryland like he does most good programs prior to Big East season.

The argument that start to change the tide was that coaches were signing extensions and leaving programs the next year and players behind. So the media started asking why are players held to a different standard than coaches making millions of dollars?

I detested the ewing hire and the extension so i get it. I dropped out of this board as a result long ago. My expectations for that money? Ncaa bid at or over 50% of his term. Playing second weekend about a third of those? Those are baselines, not best case.

MODERATOR NOTE: I am going to go back through this and move all discussion about what coaches could have been selected to the head coaches discussion thread. The topic here is the new Georgetown Basketball Coach. You can argue to your hearts' content about what could have been in the other thread, please don't muck this one up as well. Thanks.

Some should be happy about this, but they won't. Go Hoyas! If true, then the money complaints really should stop. Providence reportedly had offered him about $4.8 million, so the $5 million from Georgetown isn't really a lot. It's more a respect thing - if you want a coach to move that you really want (from the conference, no less), you have to pay more. In my mind, these discussions about money go one of two ways. Either Cooley does great, and nobody cares, or Cooley doesn't do great, and people keep bringing it up to ding him. Even if his performance is in the middle, I think it won't have much salience in the short-term. I actually think 7 years for $35 million isn't a bad deal at all for a proven coach who has gotten to the NCAA tournament more often than not in the last ten years, particularly given that we were happy to pay Ewing $4 million for no success at all.

Sounds good. But, call me cynical, because I’ll need more than Goodman and his “source” to take it to the bank. Then there’s also the issue of other financial commitments, such as the amount of money for assistants.

Then there’s also the issue of other financial commitments, such as the amount of money for assistants. Right, but that's not money for Cooley. Neither is NLI money. It seems pretty obvious to me that while the extra money is nice, the real reason for the move ranged between something different, a new challenge and the upside of Georgetown over what he could do at Providence. I understand why people are hung up on other options. But I don't give a crap about how much the University pays him.

How much he is being paid is insignificant when one remembers he left lifetime security in his hometown to go to a place where the product that he is now responsible for fixing is extraordinarily banged up. This was far from the easy choice for Ed. The easy choice was staying put. PC would have essentially matched him and no great risk need have been assumed by him.
Fiscally its almost a lateral move to go from a steady winner to an historically damaged program that is not only very bad right now but still has expectations that come with once being great....a LONG LONG time ago. Given all that...people want to complain we had to pay him a bit more to move from an ice cool seat with built-in refrigeration to a seat engulfed in flames when Ewing last sat on it 2 very short weeks ago. Sure, he buys some time...but how much? He took a real risk and is paying a cost leaving PC in many ways.
People need to stop acting like we just doubled what PC could possibly pay him...or any other program that wouldn't mind hiring the reigning Naismith Coach of the Year. Just to be clear....that's not a southern New England honor right...that's NATIONAL COY right? Just checking.
