Putting my thoughts together before this is officially announced so I can just get them out there once we move to the official Ed Cooley hired thread
• Once you remove Pitino as an option (and honestly debating about whether that should’ve been an option feels besides the point now), I think Cooley was reasonably the next best option available. I could talk myself into Shrewsberry as a reasonable pivot. Any other coaches were either unrealistic or not as qualified as Cooley. Suggesting Nate Oats or Jerome Tang or any of the other names would just give up what they’re building / built to come here was silly. Moving down to even the Keatts, Rhoades, Capel range is worse than Cooley. Suggesting Tobin Anderson etc. is laughable and doesn’t require a response
• In terms of the speed of the search, have seen complaints this was not a national search. Respectfully disagree here. We have known for weeks / months we were moving on. The fact that there’s been a pretty well published list of backup options means there was thought here. This is not an NFL opening where everyone is going to get multiple interviews, it gets reported, and then a decision is made. You have to move quickly to lock in your person. This is much better than what happened with JT3 / Ewing in terms of timing etc.
• How much should I care about the actual salary? Appreciate its going to put Cooley in a range we probably don’t think his basketball results warrant. I don’t think we’d be able to pay market rate to get someone to take on the current situation. If anything I see the positive that we are still willing to invest after what’s happened. I’m sensitive to other programs but I think viewing that budget as fungible is naïve. I also think that’s unfairly capping Cooleys ceiling but its his job to prove it.
• For those worried this is just a Thompson “family” hire, can we wait and see who’s still involved? If Ronnie, Howze, or any other hangers on are affiliated with the program? Absolutely go nuts. If PE Jr is his DOBO, that would feel too soon. Everyone wants to see that this will be different. The rumor of Providence assistants coming with Cooley should give comfort. Otherwise, who in the “family” benefits if the fat gets cut out?
• As for Cooley the actual basketball coach… I feel like his offensive plan has evolved as the game has shifted over last few years. They’ll occasionally break out the FLEX offense on out of bounds plays, but otherwise have moved to a reasonably modern Xs and Os offensive scheme. You’ll see tons of dribble hand offs, ball movement, and dominating the boards. 3 of the last 4 years was a top 50 offense. For the defense, this was really the first year it fell apart but the prior 8 years they’ve basically been at least top 50 defense per T-Rank. I’m a little worried the defensive turnovers dried up the last couple of years but that’s nit-picking. This was also the fastest they’ve ever played tempo wise.
• Do I feel super great about poaching another Catholic 7 coach? Not really. But I don’t think he should’ve been off limits and if he was ready to move on, he’s an adult and can deal with the consequences. We’re all adults here.
• I wouldn’t expect Hopkins to join us, he’s old for a sophomore and should probably be looking to go pro
Time to put a roster together, and Cooley has been very successful in the portal. It’s going to move quickly. Best of luck and Hoya Saxa

Welcome to Ed Cooley. Had someone told me a year ago, after Patrick Ewing went 0-20 that we'd have any shot at Ed Cooley, I would have thought it was extremely unlikely, yet I would have been very excited at the prospect. I am confident Cooley can turn this program around and hopefully quickly. I look forward to his introduction by Georgetown and look forward to following his efforts to assemble a staff and roster. Hoya Saxa.

Best thing about it is the swiftness. He can hit the portal now ahead of teams like PC, SJ, ND, etc. Let's go!

Yay!!!! After what we have been through with Ewing I am happy with the hire of Coach Ed Cooley. I didn’t think it would be possible when rumors started swirling but I’m glad it did. Hopefully it won’t take Coach Cooley long to turn things around.

Setting aside the noise, after Pitino, this is about as good a hire as could be expected. There may be some higher ceilings out there, but they are all risky mid-major bets. Cooley comes in proven as a high major coach, and his teams play tough, hard-nosed basketball. Plus, its pretty clear a large motivation for his coming to the Hilltop is to have access to the greater resources and apparently NIL money--which at a minimum demonstrates admin's commitment to the program.
Now get to it coach.

No way that’s real.
Down the road - perhaps, and might actually be a good idea. But no chance Cooley would do that before he shows who is in charge for a couple years…

Welcome to the Hilltop Coach Cooley. Wikipedia already has him as the Hoyas head coach! First step on the road back to a top 20 program.
