I believe the upside to James Jones is higher than most give it credit for. Would not be my first, second or third choice, but if there's where we land - I will be onboard.

I don’t think there’s any indication Jones is a good recruiter. Even Amaker brings in your occasional high three/four star. Jones has never brought in a high caliber player, he just overperforms with the players he does have. I know the Ivy League isn’t exactly the easiest conference in the world to land players, but several other ivies have landed HM-quality guys the last couple years.

If I had to bet money today, he's the one I'd bet on. He is the most anodyne possible hire. He's objectively a better basketball coach than Ewing, nobody can argue that. He's coming from Yale, and I imagine in most cases when Georgetown is able to hire someone away from Yale it's a coup. For that reason it will go over well with the academic-types DeGioia hangs out with, and he can talk up in the press conference how Jones understands recruiting successful "student athletes" to a demanding academic institution etc. And because Jones is black, JD will be insulated from any criticism that might come from handing over the program to a white guy (I don't need a reminder on Esherick and not trying to be provocative on this point, just saying that we all know there are going to be some people who will be loudly critical if the next head coach is white). It's a nice, safe hire for Jack who nobody can really criticize too much in the short-term, and in the longer-term JD will have retired and it'll be somebody else's problem. Will recruits be lining up to play for James Jones? Will he grab headlines or win the press conference? Does he have any NIL experience? Probably not to all of the above. But he's a very very safe pick that at the very beginning will shield JD from criticism from the basketball-minded people, the academics, the DEI-focused, and pretty much every major constituency that's watching the hire closely. And that's what I think someone like him is going to want. Do people really think that handing the keys of the basketball program of a predominantly white institution to a white coach would result in blowback? I can’t imagine that’s the case, outside of a very small number of Hoya fans. Hiring a coach based on race sounds like a truly terrible idea.

Honestly, I think recruiting in its traditional format is last on my list for the next head coach. There are so many ways and opportunities to construct a roster, I think Jones would be fine. Even a poor recruiter at Georgetown is likely going to recruit to a league average level in the Big East.

Before you submit or read your next post, stop and read this from Casual Hoya. Then come back and be ready to think and discuss intelligently. This is no time for feelings overruling our thoughts and reason. Get serious -- or else how can we expect Jack DeGioia, theBoard, and the folks who have their ear to be serious in making this important decision?

The post on Casual Hoya is likely already more thorough and serious than anything anybody did at Georgetown in 2017. Notably, if a similar list was made in January 2017 about possible JT3 replacements, I doubt Ewing would have even been on it.

But you aren’t reaching national power status again with a hire like Jones imo, and I’m still deluded enough to think we can get there.

While true and something we have desperately needed, I think it would send a very bad signal to the conference and basketball world if we hire an ivy coach. That is all but saying we kind of give up and it is a more lazy, risk aversion attempt at "stabilizing" the program which basically means getting at least 1 win each conference season

Show me one HM coach who consistently overperforms with their players but lags in the recruiting department? Show kids you can develop them & they'll come

Show kids you can develop them & they'll come Kids generally aren’t jumping at the opportunity to play for sixty year old guys who spent their entire lives coaching low majors. Going to go out and guess 99% of recruits can’t name a recognizable player that Jones has ever developed besides maybe Jordan Bruner (who was more or less a disaster at Bama relative to expectations). I can’t really say for sure who he has developed at Yale into high major caliber players, I’m sure there are some as there always will be by nature of being D1, but this to me seems way riskier than you’re making it out to be. In my opinion, hiring an Ivy League guy is effectively surrendering on ever being a national competitor again and I’d rather roll the dice on a risky but exciting guy like Mike Jones instead (and I’ve been very vocally in opposition to hiring him). If we’re going to down Id much rather go down swinging.

Just hire Pitino; this truly is not rocket science.

Atkininson played well at ND, Mason played well @ Baylor, Oni was drafted in the 2nd round. There are others who could have made the jump if eligibility had been available to them. Your comment on surrendering is exactly what folks said when JT3 was hired

At this point it looks like we’re just letting coach Ewing solidify his place as the worst coach in BE history and perhaps even the worst coach in a power conference in the modern era. Bad coaches going forward will be compared to Pat. It’s been difficult to watch this play out.
