This didn't age well at all. I missed this post. If I had seen it I would have pointed out that Miami had been to the sweet 16 one time ever before Larranaga and now have been to four sweet 16s in last twelve years, back to back elite 8s and now a final four. Shaka has Marquette ranked in the Top 10 for much of the year this year. There are some outliers (Kevin Ollie, Frank Martin to name a few recent ones). But I think Larranaga and Smart are two the best coaches in college basketball right now. Not at all! But the Shaka Smart part has -- I'm not sure how you rate him as one of the best coaches based on any kind of results. And I think if you looked at the list of those coaches that make runs like this, they don't necessarily go on to dominate in new digs. I think Smart is one of the best due to the fact he has completely reinvented himself coaching-wise, not many coaches are able to do that.

If true, I hope this officially starts his retirement as an HC. He signed the contract 23 years ago. I'll give him that. Doesn't Brey have an agent who should have brought this "detail" to his attention? Or has he been so ensconced at ND for so long he no longer has one? At least in 2016 Brey indeed did have an agent. "It's the amount of people who want to get into the business," answered Bazant, a Vanderbilt graduate who signed his first college basketball coach in 2003. Bazant joined WME earlier this year and now has a list of clients that includes Mississippi State's Ben Howland, North Carolina State's Mark Gottfried, Notre Dame's Mike Brey, Iowa's Fran McCaffery, Rutger's Steve Pikiell, Iowa State's Steve Prohm, Arizona State's Bobby Hurley, Rhode Island's Dan Hurley, Georgia's Mark Fox, Cincinnati's Mick Cronin, Creighton's Greg McDermott and Northern Iowa's Ben Jacobson. www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/meet-the-agents-who-have-their-fingers-on-college-basketball-coaching-changes/

"Penn State has offered its head basketball coach opening to VCU coach Mike Rhoades, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. The annual salary in the offer to Rhoades is reported to be worth more than $3 million. The move makes sense as Rhoades is a native of Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania and will now have the opportunity to return to his home state. He played college basketball for Lebanon Valley in Annville, Pennsylvania, where he was the 1995 Division III Player of the Year and has his jersey retired." www.on3.com/college/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/penn-state-offers-head-coaching-job-vcu-mike-rhoades/

Followed VCU closely this year as my daughter is a freshman. As long as Odom comes my primary concern is MR taking a few current players, not MR's coaching. Rams have a few guys who are starting to blossom.

I know a lot of people are high on English, but if I were Providence I would have hired Rhoades or Odom ahead of English.

Highly doubt we would have hired him but IMO Odom > English.

Him and Kevin Ollie right Kevin Ollie was in my top 3 candidates. Nobody cares. Especially with poorly-conceived ideas like this one and Kim English being your “dark horse candidate”. Talk about having no credibility.

It’s useless speculation at this point, but I think had Cooley passed there’s a chance we would’ve considered English, as I think Shrewsberry would have gone to Notre Dame over us given his Midwest roots. For the Big East, I hope English does well but he’s by no means a sure thing at this point and he had a mixed record at George Mason. It’ll be interesting to see what he does with Providence.

Mediocre Kim English. What has he really done to warrant being treated like the second coming of Rick Pitino.

Good move. Keeping it in the George Mason family so they don’t get treated like a stepping stone school for the likes of Kim English
