For what it's worth, I saw the local TV news report on St. John's hiring Pitino today, and all the focus was on his past success and his assertions that he plans to turn St. John's around immediately. Not a word about the baggage he does have. Nobody cares (as long as he wins).

"No one minded" about Ewing's past? "No one cares" about Pitino's transgressions? Maybe posters should not speak in hyperbole. Yes most people don't care.
But some do.

It's much harder to argue against someone choosing millions of dollars. Going with the "it's not you, it's me" narrative brings more questions & anger in my opinion That makes no sense IMO given that the raise was pretty nominal and prob nothing when you factor in taxes, the pain of moving, etc. Nobody with half a brain would buy that. How about, “I grew up watching JTJr’s teams and this was always my dream job.”

Since I know you’re just being snarky I definitely won’t bother pointing out that Antonio Blakeny at least was 17 and the girl he was set up with was the underage daughter of the Madam who wrote the book on the “services” she and her kid provided. And I certainly won’t direct your attention to articles like this, in which Pitino claims banging (or raping - he says poTAYto, she says poTAHto) girls was really just his way of getting over 9/11. syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/236134-rick-pitino-how-is-911-related-to-banging-some-skank-in-a-restaurant.amp.htmlI mean really, if I went in that direction someone would really need a break … Did he have sex with a hooker at a strip club in public paid by a money launderer while married to the woman who had his kid out of wedlock, which them cost him his marriage? We had that person for six years, no one minded until he became a historic loser and we paid him $31m. Ha! Fantastic work. What a fraud! A national title as a player erases blatant dirt-baggery.

Because it’s a small raise, there’s really no way to spin it other than GU is a more attractive job than PC, and there’s no way for Friar fans to say that without being offended. To be clear, I’m happy that we got Cooley and don’t really care that Friar fans are upset. I understand why. But it doesn’t make me wish we had gone a different route.

Guess this can also be applied with JT3’s lone successful post-seasons with Esh’s recruits It's been a while, but now I remember you. I remember Eagle54 more and followed his posts until he was permanently blocked. Tried to speak up for him and was told he had too many warnings for his posts towards hoyasaxa2004 I remember we used to talk about the state of the program declining under JTIII. You used to post in the game threads, what changed? Hah yes - the good ole memories! Good seeing you as well sir Just got tired of how things are continuing to be run at the Thompson university, so did not really want to bother watching any games (which is the case with many other posters here on HT who used to post frequently)

Going with the "it's not you, it's me" narrative brings more questions & anger in my opinion It almost certainly brings more questions and anger from Providence fans, but Hoya fans should be excited that the money was a relatively minor part of the move. I think Cooley realized that last year's team was as good as it could get at Provy and he couldn't make the Elite 8. The upside at GTown is higher and he will have the opportunity to get more talent. Our FF team was led by DMV 2nd and 3rd tier guys.

I'll be interested to see if he goes with the dream job narrative tomorrow

good hire. i really think that Pitino won't run through the Big East at any point as people think he will. A bunch of great coaches that teach the same principles as he in BE. Should be fun!

Totally agree on Pitino’s likely impact at SJU being exaggerated. With apologies to some on this board, 71 is VERY old for a coach…and Jamaica NY is a bloody pit. Don’t know how anyone could visit there and GU and choose the former…unless Christ himself was coaching.

With the backing of SJU alum billionaire and fellow horse racing owner Mike Repone, Pitino will have access to big NIL $: nypost.com/2023/03/18/mike-repole-eager-to-help-st-johns-if-it-hires-rick-pitino/That NIL backing will bring top players. Combine that with Pitino’s coaching abilities, and you have a winner. Sports gurus/fans wanted SJU and GU back at the top of the BE? Here we go.

I hope we don’t delude ourselves into thinking he’s not gonna get players at St. John’s. That man can sell water to a whale. He’s gonna get players

I'll be interested to see if he goes with the dream job narrative tomorrow In 2020, Cooley's salary was around $3.4 million according to PC's IRS 990. With built in raises and other non-salary benefits, perhaps it approached $4.5 by 2023. Hilariously, the 990, pro forma, states that he works 40 hours a week! Ha ha. Any DI basketball coach working only 40 hours a week is looking to get fired! projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/display_990/50258932/05_2021_prefixes_04-06%2F050258932_202006_990_2021052018154290
