In other words, if Pitino were Black he would be hired in a nanosecond. Sigh. If Pitino was black he would've never gotten another chance after Louisville... That is a ridiculous statement.

Sorry I’m missing the elephant. Can you elaborate? The fact that many believe the head coach of Georgetown needs to be black. I don’t think so, but my sense is that Jack believes that. Of course, who really knows.

People keep saying things like "go outside the box and hire Staley." But, the fact is that in a lot of ways hiring Ewing was two things simultaneously: (1) staying within the "family," and thus placating John Thompson, and (2) going way outside the norms of hiring by hiring an NBA great with little to no experience in th college game. True, other programs have hired NBA greats, and in many instances those have failed too (though arguably nowhere near as badly as Ewing who will now and forever be the poster child for "great player, horrible coach"). But, the fact is that no other program in 2017 would have hired Patrick Ewing for the reasons that have been discussed ad nauseum.
DeGioia/John Thompson Jr./The Board did go unconventional by hiring Ewing and barely trying to find someone who was actually experienced. And it's worked out horribly. That said, I think Staley has coaching chops (unlike Ewing) and could be good, but there are a lot of risks there too (including difficulty firing her if it didn't work out). Of course, all this talk assumes Staley would have a reason to leave her current situation where she already makes a ton of money and isn't facing a total turnaround in an area of basketball where she's never coached. Frankly, I think she'd be crazy to take our job given the condition we are in.

You keep harping on that. There really is no one better who is available right now in a manageable way. It will be a monumental resurrection and load of work to fix the program from the ground up. It will require someone who has done it before and everyone at GU Basketball should get out of the way. It will also require for him to bring his team of trusted people. I trust that he can do it and leave it working in a professional way, not Mary and Pops’ way. I keep harping on it because I think it greatly matters. Lets take a quick look at the 4 oldest active coaches in D-1 college basketball: 1. Jim Boeheim (78)- the decline is nearly complete. Syracuse is looking for a way out. 2. Cliff Ellis (77) - last place in Sun Belt 3. Leonard Hamilton (74) - one of the worst seasons of his career this season 4. Jim Larranaga (73) - The best of the older bunch. Miami is a top 25 team. Theyve been aided GREATLY in the new NIL environment by booster John Ruiz and his bottomless wallet, of which Georgetown will not have. No college coach has won a championship beyond 68 years old (please correct me if this is wrong, but this was the case as of a few years ago). And again, I dont look at this as any old job a great coach (which Pitino is!) can turn around with a snap of ones fingers. We have NIL hurdles. We have administration hurdles. We have (maybe less so after the Ewing years) academic hurdles. And we have perception issues. This isnt simply a .500 team like Xavier who had been a consistent bubble sitter that needed some new energy and took that risk on a much younger coach with a checkered past in Sean Miller. This isnt the Georgetown of JT3 vintage where first round flameouts could potentially quickly be turned into postseason success. Assuming Ronny is gone (which I truly believe to be the case) then this is a program that needs rebuilding from the foundation. There is NOTHING that should be left behind from the PR team to the social team to the SIDs office to the "chief of staff" to strength and conditioning and beyond. Asking a then 71 year old to lead this from the ground rebuild is a TALL TALL task. Could he do it? Sure. He certainly has a track record of success. But if I was the one handing the keys over to a new coach in the hope of resurrecting a dying program that needs a top to bottom overhaul - hiring a grandfather in his 70s would not be my top choice. People at that age want to work less not more. They want to work smarter not harder. They want to balance their job with their family time. I respect all of that. I just dont want that in my new coach that I want to resuscitate a dying program. I realize Im in the minority - Im fine with that. Wholeheartedly disagree. The Pitino coaching Iona is not your typical 70 year-old of the 1970s. The posters after you covered everything I would say.

Two part serious question on this topic, both for those with opinions and those potentially with “insider” or at least well informed outsider knowledge: (1) who would you LIKE to have final say on the new coach hire/is there a particular process you’d like to have followed?, and (2) who do you think actually WILL have the final say/what process do you think will be followed? I’m genuinely interested in everyone’s thoughts in this, and I’m pretty much clueless myself..

I happen to love Dawn Staley as a basketball coach (heck, I remember liking her lots as a player). She is talented, a class act, and probably could be a decent coach of a men's team (maybe not yet at a P5/6 school) if she wanted. But I can't imagine that she would give up her outstanding current situation to come here and try to put out this dumpster fire. It would be too much of a gamble for us, anyway. Get Pitino or an up-and-coming men's coach who reflects the values we want to project and looks ready to step up and be successful.

#1 Pitino Then everyone else
If I had one veto - Brey
The Pitino thing is so obvious and has been discussed.

Every day that passes I get closer and closer to a “Pitino or bust” mentality personally. He is the obvious answer to right the ship. He wants to come here. It’s the equivalent of an alley oop for DeGioia. All he needs to do is go up and slam it home.
But this is Georgetown. He’ll blow his Achilles on the jump, the ball will sail out of bounds, and we’ll end up with Mike Brey

The fact that many believe the head coach of Georgetown needs to be black. I don’t think so, but my sense is that Jack believes that. Of course, who really knows. At this point, I think it's fair to assume that JT2 ordered Jack to hire Esherick, fire Esherick, hire JT3 and hire Ewing. Likely the one tough call Jack has made was firing JT3 -- the dumb delay in executing that decision (how many days after our last game??) spoke volumes in terms of his decisiveness. It's pretty well understood that the Board of the university had to effectively override JT2 and force Jack to fire JT3. I don't think DeGioia ever made a serious decision on basketball that wasn't directed by JT2 or forced on him by the monied donors. I would hope that the same types that demanded the firing of JT3 are calling him right now and telling him not only to pull the trigger but to get the Pitino hire done. The good news is that there are a lot of wealthy Georgetown alums living up and down the eastern seaboard and particularly in the NY/NJ area. Those with money who are still basketball fans and how are east coasters should see what the rest of us see -- Pitino, one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, is there for the taking. The Thompson legacy will last forever ... but Ewing has ended the succession plan. Long live the king, the king is dead.

My fear is that the admin knows that they have to “go for” Pitino but don’t really want him to accept, so they’ll make him a substandard offer. Lowball pay, wrong years, keep Ronny, whatever. Something that will let them say “we talked to Pitino but couldn’t make it happen, so we got Brey instead.”

If for some reason they wanted folks to think they tried for Pitino (which I doubt) they would just say so. He may deny (especially if it isn't true!!) but since coaches deny all the time anyways it would work. But...I think that if they don't want Pitino, they simply won't offer. I don't think they'd care about any reaction.

If Georgetown offers it to Pitino and he declines, perhaps the powers-that-be will leak that it was Pitino's decision to turn us down in an attempt to mollify a demoralized fan base. We tried but he declined. (Or it may be the low ball effort noted above}. Nonetheless, if that occurs, it will not excuse the bungling by the GU Admin in the hiring of Ewing in the first place and extending his contract.

Here's the thing - no one's going to believe any "we talked to Pitino and couldn't make it happen" story. You can't sell that kind of nonsense after the way the last two searches have gone where they put up the AD and a respected alum on a panel, told us they'd do a nationwide search, and then hired whoever JT2 wanted. There's zero trust here - no one is going to be giving them credit for a process we know has been Kabuki theater in the past.
If Pitino ends up at Kentucky - that's one thing. Their program has the budget of a small nation-state - we can't compete with that. If Pitino ended up at St. John's, is anyone going to believe they tried?
Whoever the result is, that's who they had in mind.

Folks should not be so dismissive of Pitino's age. While I would favor the hire it is only because I really believe that quick turnarounds are very possible with the right coach.I assume that Pitino will come in with a plan, quality assistants and will do very well in the transfer portal. But the nagging question in my mind is if the Administration drags its feet on a hire or if Pitino does not hire some quality assistants who can recruit immediately, then this rebuild can take some time, at which point you need to ask if you want to start a multi-year rebuild with a coach who will be 71 before the next season begins. My son asked me if I would be as satisfied with a 6th or 7th place finish in the BE next year if Pitino is the coach as opposed to the same finish with a younger coach. Have to acknowledge that my expectations for Pitino given his age and pedigree would be more.

He will go for it from day 1… hard… If DeGioia doesn’t know to how to establish a search committee or doesn’t want it, just pick up the phone. There really is no need for a search committee this time around. Let’s keep the tradition. The stars have aligned.

Pitino has a close relationship with some big hitter Georgetown alums/donors. There is no need for any sort of search committee because of the relationships that already exist and Pitino's clear qualification for the job. This should get done and I expect it will happen relatively fast post-BET.
