Why is there a thread about this player? It does not sound as if the Hoyas are involved. Top 10 player nationally who is from the area - would think Cooley would get involved especially with an ace local recruiter on staff and his stated desire to focus on DMV recruiting. Yeah as others have stated the shoe company affliations still mean something even in NIL world.

"WHICH 2024 OR 2025 PROSPECT THAT YOU’VE SEEN SO FAR THIS SPRING DO YOU THINK MOSTY DESERVES A BUMP IN RANKING?... “Derik Queen, for sure. He’s been extremely dominant all spring for Team Thrill in the UAA, emerging as the top player in each of the two live periods and leading his team to an undefeated record and the UAA spring title. He seems to be a step quicker in his role as a go-to scorer, which is different from his role as a key piece on his juggernaut of a high school team at Montverde Academy. Queen has developed as an even more capable passer and potentially dominant rebounder. He just checks off so many boxes on both ends. I’ve been highly impressed with him so far.” - Jordan basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/rivals-roundtable-transfer-portal-next-rankings-update"

"Five prospects on the brink of five-star status... Ranking: 30 Queen’s high school season ended in the quarterfinals at GEICO Nationals, after he drove the lane and missed a heavily contested layup off the front of the rim; that seemed to light a fire under the versatile 6-foot-10 forward that has yet to be quelled. Queen has, arguably, been the most consistent big in the class, emerging as the top player in the Under Armour Association for each of the live periods and leading Team Thrill (Md.) to an undefeated record and the UAA spring title. Queen embraces his role as a go-to scorer, which is different from his role as a key piece on the juggernaut that is Montverde Academy. He’s expanded his capabilities as a playmaker and passer, has improved as a defensive presence in the paint and swallows rebounds on both ends." basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/five-prospects-on-the-brink-of-five-star-status

"Derik Queen 6-9, 230 pounds Montverde (Fla.) Montverde Academy, Team Thrill No. 10 overall, No. 2 power forward Schools: Maryland, IU, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Xavier, Texas, Alabama, Arizona, Auburn, Kansas One of the most talented big men in his class, Queen has been a target on Indiana’s board for some time. He took a junior-year official visit to Bloomington, and the Hoosiers remain in the mix heading into the summer. Maryland has at times been perceived as the team to beat for the Baltimore native, though that might no longer be the case." www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/indiana/2023/06/28/indiana-hoosiers-basketball-recruiting-class-2024-board-iu-flory-bidunga-boogie-fland-dylan-harper/70341604007/

Georgetown has not been involved with Queen for quite awhile. Now I don’t expect newspapers or even many recruiting sites to keep up with all the minutiae, but fans following a specific program should know better.

He may not be the biggest or more athletic but there isn't anyone in high school with a better feel and more skill with their back to the basket. He has tremendous footwork and a gifted touch with both hands, scoring time and time again over both shoulders. He also flashed his passing ability and is continuing to improve his decision making. By the time the final buzzer sounded, Queen finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks, shooting 11-14 from the field... COACHES IN ATTENDANCE FOR CHICAGO BULLS VS BOSTON CELTICS: Florida, LSU, Georgetown, Arizona, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Creighton, St Mary’s, LSU, Nate Oats, Rick Pitino, Tony Bennett, Greg McDermott, Porter Moser, NC State, UCLA, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Matt McMahon, Tennessee, Indiana, Miami, Jim L, Kim English, Mississippi State and others. I see this post made quite an impression on hoyaboya. Remember it does not comport with his agenda, which is to say look, here's another top rated local recruit who got away from Georgetown. Cooley stinks.

"Queen has some of the best hands and footwork of any 250-pounder that you will see. At 6-foot-9, he has good size and physicality. He can finish with either hand in the post, can drive from the elbow or the perimeter into the post, and use a spin move off the bounce in traffic to score. He can grab a rebound and start the break or he’ll run in transition to post or set a drag screen, roll and look for the dump-off. Queen is a very good rebounder and rim protector. In the two games we watched, Queen made 21-of-24 shots and posted game-highs in points (25 and 22) and rebounds. (11 and 12). Queen has taken junior year official visits to Maryland and Indiana. Other programs are involved but the two Big Ten programs appear to be the leaders for the Baltimore product. One key note is that Queen's lead recruiter at Maryland, Tony Skinn, is now the head coach at George Mason making the Terps' efforts to keep Queen home more challenging." basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/wood-s-takeaways-nbpa-top-100-camp-4

Well well well, it looks like this thread might finally be relevant to the Hoyas after all: throughthephog.com/2023/07/10/derik-queen-visit-kansas-basketball/"Queen, the No. 6 ranked player and No. 2 ranked center according to 247 Sports, is looking to visit Lawrence in August or early September. An undisclosed source revealed that he is also finalizing dates to see LSU, Georgetown, and Houston. He plans to tour Georgetown before any of the other aforementioned schools, with the visit likely coming in July."

If this happens, I will be the biggest Cooley apologist in the history of hoyatalk. Alot on this board is hyperbole, but if you have Queen, Sorber and Fielder as your 3 bigs in a year. If you aren't at least elite 8, and a top 10 team, you can't coach. If you were dreaming of a frontcourt to run Flex with those 3 up front would be the dream tandem.

Cooley isn't going to keep to door open much longer for you. We got a good driver.

He has appeared to be a heavy Maryland lean for a while now, but the fact that he never committed and Skinn is no longer there is telling. Need to do everything we can to land his commitment on his visit.

Get this kid. Just not sure how him and sorber would fit together Sorber reclass to '23 and Queen a clear class of '24 kid. You get these two kinds of talents, you find a way to make it fit - they'd be a great duo and Cook is an ideal dirty work guy alongside them.

"Five of the toughest defensive assignments in the country... Opposing bigs hate to see Queen coming; his versatility and quickness as a scorer and rebounder are next level. Queen has some of the best footwork of any big in the country, uses his 6-foot-10, 220-pound frame to create separation in the paint and has an IQ that reads off the charts as one of the best passers in the country. Queen led Team Thrill to a 43-4 record, the Under Armour spring title and the Sport Radar Showcase title this summer. He capped off his dominant July with a 21-point, 13-rebound and nine-assist outing in a showcase game on national television against the Florida Rebels." basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/five-of-the-greatest-toughest-defensive-assignments-in-the-country

No idea what to make of this… There is a couple places on Twitter saying Queen is currently on his visit. I can't link Twitter stories though on my work computer!
