Jay retiring is very bad news for the Big East. Agreed. Incredible coach and ambassador.

Outside of Nova, how many elite 8 and final 4 appearances does the post-breakup Big East have?

Two if I'm not mistaken, Butler & Xavier Nova has almost single handedly been keeping the BE in the conversation with the power 5 conferences. Plenty of other programs have had good seasons, but nobody else has consistently been a threat in the tournament. If Nova can't maintain the same level, other programs will have to step up for the BE to maintain the same level of relevance.

The absolute right choice. Wish him the best for the good of the conference except twice a year and maybe once in the BET.

I think Wright also realized he can't run his skills development program when people can transfer at any moment thanks to the don't have to sit out a year rule. That rule has really disrupted college basketball (probably alot more than NIL) and cause alot of coaches to suddenly retire.

College hoops is badly broken and has become for most sports fans, at best, a passing interest in March.

Plenty of other programs have had good seasons, but nobody else has consistently been a threat in the tournament. If Nova can't maintain the same level, other programs will have to step up for the BE to maintain the same level of relevance. This is true. Honestly the league has made some strong hires the last few years in Smart, Matta, Holloway, and Miller. I think you can probably add Neptune to that list even though his name isn't as big, he's an up-and-comer. Plus McDermott and Cooley are still two of the strongest coaches in the country. There are questions about Stubblefield and probably Anderson and Hurley too, but other than us, there aren't too many obvious weak links. Some of the new guys won't pan out I'm sure, but on paper, it's a pretty strong crew of coaches. That said, the thing the league may lack is a "blue blood", flag-bearer type. I can see us having a lot of really good teams year in and year out and putting many teams in the dance, but still not having anybody in the Final 4 or even the elite 8. And that tends to color perception of the league overall. Most people will think that an ACC with perennial contenders Duke and UNC and a bunch of also rans is a superior league to a Big East that has strong teams top to bottom but no 1 seeds and no true title contenders most years. We need someone to step up and be that team, if it won't be Nova anymore. It would be great if it was us, and that's what we all thought we'd be when the new league formed, but our new assistants may need to be literal miracle workers for that to happen any time soon given how far we've fallen.

Great coach. Won big and won the (w)right way.
Leaves in good health and good standing. Leaves on his own terms. Hall of Fame last year.
How much more can he really do? Nothing else to prove.
Props to him.

I hate Nova as any Georgetown grad should. That said, I hope the rumors about his wife's health aren't true. I used to hate Nova for 85 but I've come to hate Nova because they've been excellent and have done it the right way. I'll miss hating Jay Wright for being an excellent coach. Best to him and his family.

I have some faith in Neptune to keep the power relevant although I am not sure about a consistent contender. His showing at Fordham albeit one season shows that he seems to know what he is doing and can get more out of less. On the topic of this hurting the league... some school way out West can certainly help the status and them being in a big league could possibly aid their NIL output for players

That rule has really disrupted college basketball (probably alot more than NIL) and cause alot of coaches to suddenly retire. He would know what his team was going to be by May 2nd of each year, which would leave plenty of time for team/player development.

The way Nova handled this shows the difference in program/culture beyond the court. News breaks. Wright holds team meeting around that same time. Villanova/Wright put out a statement shortly after. An hour later they name his successor and Wright announces it formally via social media.
It's a microcosm of a good culture. Coordination. Teamwork. Preparation.
